Campaign for Funds Is Extended for Week For Community Chest A goal of $1,500 has been set for the Zebulon Community Chest campaign for funds, and the drive will be extended into next week in a special effort to obtain this amount, announced Gilbert Beck, Chairman of the organization, late yesterday. Mrs. Harold Pippin reported contributions from Wakefield a mounting to $20.00. Harold Tay lor, working with the colored peo ple, reported $50.00. Amounts collected by other so licitors had not been reported yes terday, the chairman said. The goal was established by the Chest chairman after conferring with members of the Board of Di rectors and determining the mini mum amount which could be al lotted to the agencies participating. The funds collected will be di vided among the boy and girl Scout organizations, the community rec reation program, and emergency welfare cases. Last Rites Are Held For Mrs. Lula Green Funeral services for Mrs. Lula Green, 83, were conducted from the Zebulon Methodist Church at 3 p. m. Wednesday by the Rev. S. E. Mercer. The body lay in state for an hour before the ser vice. Burial was in the Zebulon Cemetery. Mrs, Green died at Carolina Generlal Hospital in Wilson Mon day afternoon after a long illness. Surviving are two sons, L. G. Turnage, Louisburg, G. H. Turnage, Bailey; a daughter, Mrs. Annie Watson, Mount Gilead; two step daughters, Mrs. Frank Green, Dur ham, Mrs. Lily Driver, Zebulon. Armistice Day Noted At Zebulon Church A short Armistice Day program was given in the Bar«ica room of the Baptist Church Sunday after noon at 5:00 o’clock. Sponsored by the Senior and Junior Wom an’s Clubs, it was directed by Mrs. Ed Ellington, who had work ed with Mrs. James Alford, presi dent of the Junior Club. Miss Elizabeth Salmon was pian ist. Miss Marie Smithwick gave a devotional on “Peace.” Mrs. L. M. Massey sang “Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace,” and Mrs. Theo. Davis spoke briefly of the interval between the first Armis tice Day and present time. Pearce WMS to Hold Mission Study Course The Woman’s Missionary Socie ty at Pearces is preparing for a mission study course on the night of November 30, with Miss Ruth Provence of Raleigh as teacher. The local organization has been in vited to attend this meeting; and, should a sufficient number be pres ent, the Zebulon society may also count the course on their report. Mrs. J. S. Buffaloe, mission study leader for the Zebulon organiza tion, will arrange for transporta tion for all who can go if notified in time. Dr. Massey to Speak The Zebulon Rotary Club will visit the offices of Dr. L. M. Mas sey, dentist, during the program period tonight, where they will see the modern offices and labo ratory and hear Dr. Massey explain the use of the equipment. Local Recorder s Court Docket Again Filled with Liquor and Traffic Cases Wednesday was a busy day for Judge Irby D. Gill and the Zeb ulon Recorder’s Court. A full dock et was on t schedule, with liquor and traffic violations being the cause of most of the trouble. One jail sentence was given to Joseph Lee Pearce, 24, who was assigned to the S. H. & P. W. C. for three months for speeding. For speeding 50 mph in Zebu lon, Harold Taylor, colored, paid SSO and costs. ( Crash Stop Sign * Joseph Allen Perry, of Raleigh, Yvonne Strickland, 21, of Zebu lon and Thurman Driver of Wen dell were each fined $lO and costs for failing to stop at a stop sign. Rodney B. Flood, J. E. Scarboro, colored, Rohada Richardson, color ed; female, Neomia Richardson, colored female, and Melvin Lee Morgan, were convicted of public drunkenness. Bobbie Strickland, 19, paid sl7 costs for appearing on the public highways in a drunken condition. Thomas (Buger) Jones, colored, paid SSO fine and costs whence was found guilty of possession of non-taxpaid whiskey for sale. Drunken Driving Case McKinley Morgan of Salisbury paid SIOO fine and costs for drunk en driving. Herbert Broadway, colored, of Princeton was sentenced to thl’ee months for careless and reckless driving in Zebulon. The sentence was suspended upon payment of SSO fine and costs. Johnnie L. Ward, colored, of Wilson, paid SSO fine and costs for careless and reckless driving. James Henry Ferguson, colored, of Wendell, was fined SSO and costs for passing on a curve. OdelP Harris, colored, paid $25 and costs for careless and reckless driving. Walter Terry, colored, paid sl6 costs for operating his vehicle with no muffler. Haywood C. Jeffries, 28, of Ral eigh was fined S4O and costs for speeding 65 mph. Millard Wise, colored, was fin ed $25 and costs when found guil ty of forceful trespass on proper ty of Katie Mae Baker. Henry Carpenter, colored, was fined $25 and costs for allowing a non-licensed person to operate his motor vehicle. Cris Taylor, colored, was fin ed S2OO and costs for possession of non-taxpaid whiskey for the pur pose of sale. William Elton McLamb, 24, of Wendell, was sentenced to four months for operating a motor ve hicle under the influence of li quor. The sentence was suspended on condition that McLamb pay SIOO fine and costs. Notice of ap peal was given in open court. Return to California Mrs. Frank A. Brucia and ba by, Kristina Ann, returned by plane yesterday to San Francisco, California, after a two months’ vis it with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Glover, Route 1, Zebulon. Zebulon Garden Club Holds First Regular Meeting on Tuesday Night The first regular meeting of the newly reorganized Zebulon Garden Club was held Monday night in the Club house. Beautiful ar rangements of crysanthemums and fall leaves decorated the living room. A very interesting program in three parts was presented by three of the members. Mrs. Wallace Temple spoke on the planting and care of bulbs; Mrs. Charles Flow ers on the planting and varieties of roses; and Mrs. Jethro Stell on pruning. Following each talk, questions were asked the speakers dealing with particular problems each faced in the care and cultiva tion of flowers and bulbs.. Much interesting information was gained. Paul Lovette Accepts Leadership of Local Troop of Boy Scouts Paul Lovetie, popular North Carolina State Highway Patrol man stationed in Zebulon, last night night took over leadership of the Zebulon Boy Scout Troop, ending a search by members of the Scout Committee for a Scoutmas ter. A former Scout and a firm believer in the Scouting move ment, Lovette received high praise from Chairman Haywood Jones of the Scout Committee. In order to become Scoutmaster, the patrolman had to obtain per mission from Patrol Headquarters in Raleigh. Beginning next week, the Scout meetings will be scheduled for Monday night, in order that Patrol man Lovette can meet with the troop on his night off duty. In ad dition to thfe regular weekly troop meetings, the new Scoutmaster plans to have special classes for work on the many Merit Badges which the Scouts can earn. The election of patrol and troop officers was postponed to next week so that time will be given to notify all members of Troop 340 of the elections. Patrols will be lim ited to eight Scouts, including the Patrol Leader and assistant. Woodmen Hold 1951 Ladies' Night Nov. 14 Little River Camp of the Wood men of the World honored the wives of the members at a chicken barbecue dinner Wednesday night in the Zebulon Woman’s Club house. Consul Commander Dal mon Whitley was in charge of the meeting. Sovereign Worth Hinton, Mayor* of Zebulon, urged the assembled Woodmen to contribute liberally to the Woodmen Christmas Fund. Financial Secretary Claud Dunn read a letter from Chairman Hi ram Melvin asking for contribu tions. The secretary related how local Woodmen have been delegat ed for the past two years to distri bute gifts purchased by the Christ mas Fund to the Middlesex Orph anage. Wakefield Circle Circle No. 1 of W. M. S. Wake field Church met Monday night, November 12, with Mrs. Boy Pace. There were 13 members and 1 visi tor present. After an interesting program and business session the meeting was adjourned and the hostess served a dedicious plate conisting of sandwiches, pickle, po tato chips, cake and coffee. The December meeting will be held with Matoka Pace. made by Mrs. Melvin Massey were distributed. Following the program the host esses, Mrs. R. H. Herring, Mrs. Woodrow Watkins and Mrs. Carsey Tippett invited the members into the dining room where delicious refreshments of coffee, nuts, sand wiches, and cookies were served. The dining room table was cov ered with a beautiful embroidered cloth. Pink crysanthemums flank ed by pink candles in candelabra were at one end of the table, and coffee was poured by Mrs. Tippett at the other. Approximately thirty members were present. The December meeting will be held in the home of Mrs. Melvin Massey.
