Daniel of Zebulon was selected as North Carolina’s “Druggist of the Year” by the N. C. Phar maceutical Association and last Tuesday night was presented the annual “Mortar and Pestle” Award at a dinner honoring him at the Zebulon Methodist Church. Nine Home Games Set For Wakelon 'SI Cagers Nine home games have been booked for the Wakelon basketball teams for the 1951-52 season, ac cording to the schedule released yesterday by Principal W. R. Whit tenton of Wakelon School. The boys’ and girls’ teams will open Friday night against Wake Forest in the Wakelon gymnasium. All contests played by the girls will begin at 7:30, and the boys’ game will follow. Two doubleheaders are schedul ed before the Christmas holidays, with Wake Forest Friday night and LONNIE ALFORD DIES FRIDAY IN HOSPITAL AT FAYETTEVILLE Funeral services sere held Sun- ; day afternoon in Burlington for Lonnie M. Alford, 53, who died at the veterans’ hospital at Fay etteville last Friday morning after two years of failing health. Inter ment was in the veterans section of Pine Hill Cemetery. A native of Franklin County, he was the son of the late Sid ney A. and Mary Powell Alford and the husband of Mrs. Ingle Al ford of Burlington. Wake Election Planned Thursday Farmers of Wake County on Thursday, December 13, will elect Committeemen who will adminis ter the Agricultural Conservation Allotment, Marketing Quota and Program, Price Support, Acreage the Productfbn Program in 1952. Polling places will be open at 8:30 a. m., for the purpose of nominating persons for commit teemen. The nominating meeting will be held 30 minutes before the balloting begins at each voting place. At this election, farmers will with Knightdale here on Tuesday, December 18. The new year begins with both Wakelon teams playing at Mill brook on Tuesday night, January Ist. Other games include Wendell here Jan. 4; Corinth Holders here Jan. 7; Wendell there Jan. 11; Millbrook here Jan 15; Rolesville here Jan. 13; Wake Forest there Jan. 22; Knightdale there Jan. 25; Bunn here Jan. 29; Wendell there Feb. 1; Bunn there Feb. 5; Wendell here Feb. 8; and Rolesville there Feb. 12. Mr. Alford was a member of Southside Baptist Church and the Walter B. Ellis Post of the Amer ican Legion. He was a veteran of World War 1 and received the Pur ple Heart for wounds received while serving in France and Bel gium with the 120th Infantry. In addition to his wife he is survived by five daughters, one sister, and six brothers, including M. S. Alford and S. C. Alford of Zebulon and J. T. Alford of Mid dlesex. be voting for three members for Community Committeemen and two Alternates, also a delegate to the County Convention which will be held in the Wake County PMA Office on Friday, December 14. The polls will be open for vot ing from 9 a. m. until 6 p. m. No farmer who is eligible to vote should pass up the opportunity to cast a ballot for his choice. C., Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1951 *6*€(€«€<€*€*€?€«€«'««««« CHRISTMAS CONCERT THURSDAY A Christmas Concert will be presented by the Wakelon Glee Club on Thursday evening, De cember 13, at 8 o’clock, in the school auditorium. The program will include five parts, climaxed by the Christmas Story, told with song by the Glee Club and narrat ed by Artelia Bailey and Rena Moody. A small admission charge of 25c and 50c will be charged to raise money to purchase choir robes for the members of the Glee Club. Soloists on the program include Lawrence Liles, Anne, Allman, Alton Temple, Shirley Oakley, and Bernice Edwards. The program will be under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Sal mon. Wakelon Cagers See Gerard Game at Duke Members of the Wakelon boys’ and girls’ basketball teams attended the Gerard Memorial Basketball game at Duke University last Wednes day night as guests of the lo cal Lions and Rqtary Clubs. Louis Day Addresses Local Lions at 1951 Special Ladies' Night A delicious dinner, an excel lent program, and an enjoyable dance featured the Ladies’ Night Party given in celebration of the second anniversary of the Zeb ulon Lions Club last Thursday night. The Wakelon cafeteria was filled with the Lions and their guests. « Lion International Counselor Louis Day, president of the N. C. Association for the Blind was principal speaker for the evening. Guests including visiting Lions, members of the Tpwn of Zebulon Board of Commissioners, Judge Irby D. Gill and Solicitor A. R. House of the Recorder’s Court, members of the Wakelon School faculty and many others. Fleming Is Featured As Merchants' Dean Melvin V. Fleming of Boonville, father of Mrs. C. V. Whitley of Zebulon, was featured in a pic ture and story in Sunday’s News and Observer as the oldest active merchant in Yadkin Qounty. Born November 1, 1869, he has worked in stores in Boonville since teenage, and at 23 he acquired part ownership of the Wilmoth- Fleming Company, which is now M. V. Fleming and Son. For 22 years he served as chairman of the Yadkin County Board and Education, and for the past 30 years he has served as treasurer of the Boonville Baptist Church. MITCHELL TALKS AT ROTARY The importance of cooperation between the towns and its sur rounding community was empha sized by Rotarian Carlton Mitchell, pastor of the Zebulon Baptist Church, at the meeting of the Zeb ulon Rotary Club held Friday night. The speaker was introduc ed by Program’Chairman Ralph Talton. The different phases of com munity life were reviewed by the speaker. Only the rural church is left to hold the smaller committees to gether, and every effort should Junior Play at Wakelon Tonight Tonight in the Wakelon School auditorium the Junior Class will present the three-act farce, “Here Comes the Prince,” with Bobby Raper, Betty Sue Williams, Juan na Joy Mitchell, and Fan Green taking the leading roles. Others in the cast include Rod ney Bell, Alton Temple, Sue Al ford, Gayle Privett, Sue Richards, irving Murphy, and Glenn Perry. Others helping with the play are Bruce Wood, student director Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Mayor Hinton expressed the ap preciation of the townspeople for the hard work done by Ed Kitch ings and his fellow workers in expediting the installation of the lights. The main business street of the town was flooded with light at 5:22 p. m., when the Mayor threw the switch for the first time. The new lights line each side of Arendell Avenue from Gannon Avenue to Vance Street, and ex tend a half block off Arendell Avenue in each direction down Horton Avenue and Vapce Street. The poles on which the lights are mounted are uniform in size and height, greatly improving the appearance of the business section, which lefore was cluttered with power lines criss-crossing the street. The o!J poles will be removed from the street this week in time for the ceremonies inaugurating the Christmas season Friday eve ning. Another on Friday A special Christmas program and inaugural ceremony for Zebu lon’s “White Way” will be held Friday, December 14, at 5:30 in front of the new Municipal Build ing. Short talks by community leaders and a community sing led by the Wakelon Glee Club will feature the program, which is sponsored by the Zebulon Cham ber of Commerce and the Zebulon Garden Club. Frank Wall, president of the Chamber of Commerce, will wel come those attending the program. Speakers will include Dr. L. M. Massey and Ralph Talton, who will introduce R. A. Snow, district manager of Carolina Power and Light Company. Mr. Snow will make the pre sentation of the new street lights to Mayor Worth Hinton of Zebu lon. A booklet which will contain the words of the Christmas carols to be sung will be given to every per son attending the program. Miss Elizabeth Salmon will be in charge of the music. be made to strengthen these small churches. Farmers over the nation receive over 75 percent of their income from the sale of their produce, Carlton said, and the towns will benefit by providing a place for the produce to be sold.
