Despite publicity given to census reports which show women in the majority, there are still droves of eligible males just wait ing to be asked. With nearly two months of Leap Year past, many girls who have failed to map out a compaign to snare a mate are being left in the rush. In an effort to prevent the pos sibility of the community being overrun with old maids, the Rec ord is compiling a list of bachelors with high hopes that their single ways may soon be over. Uncle Ferd's Almanac Some people believe that God made the first woman on Febru ary 15, 4004 B. C. It is a fact that women were permitted to ar gue for the first time before the Supreme Court on February 15, 1879. This means that today is the anniversary of the first argument with a woman participant before the Supreme Court and also the first argument with a woman par ticipant anywhere. (This item is subject to deletion if Aunt Selma reads same before it goes into print.) Twelve years ago today Fred Woodcock became Carolina Power & Light Company’s Zebulon mana ger, and nineteen years ago today Zangara shot at Roosevelt in Mi ami, Florida, and wounded May or Cermak of Chicago. Cermak died on March 6, 1933, some three weeks later. Twenty years ago today Mr. and HE'S AVAILABLE ■/ This distinguished, six-foot hunk of American manhood heads the list of eligible bachelors. At that time Preacher Pippin’s car was the biggest I had ever seen, except for Vaiden Whit ley’s Packard sedan. Two thousand, seven hundred and two years ago, give or take a few minutes, some of the ancient Romans decided it was time to re new the New Year’s resolutions made two weeks earlier. Probably they were right. Later the Chris tians took over the holiday, and some Christian groups still observe February 15 as a day of expiation. Nineteen years ago today C. A. Brantley and Demp Strickland of Rocky Cross were chased up a per simmon tree by Mr. Brantley’s bull. Mr. Brantley said that was the most spirited bull in Nash Coun ty, and Demp said he doubted if there was a bull in all of North Carolina with so much wrath and cabbage as that bull possessed, j Theo.
