Farm Children Requested to Bring Tobacco to Finance Activities Bus One bundle of tobacco that is what farm children have been asked to bring to school next week to help finance an activities bus for Wakelon School. The tobacco will be sold on Friday of next week, according to Mrs. Julia Draughan, representing the Wake Parent- Teacher Association, and the money received will start the bus fund. Dr. Withers Is Made RC Medical Advisor Doctor William Withers, Ral eigh physician, has been appoint ed volunteer medical advisor for the disaster committee of the Wake County Chapter, American Red Cross, according to Donald M. Kimrey, disaster chairman. Doctor Withers will have full charge of mobilizing, organizing, and directing the Wake County Red Cross medical, dental, nursing, hospital, and first aid activities. The Red Cross disaster commit tee is set up to act in county dis asters affecting five or more fam ilies and assist families and indi viduals in meeting disaster-caused needs that they cannot meet them selves. The Wake County Red Cross disaster committee’s most recent aid was given to several families near Apex when a tornado struck that area on July 30. FARM BUREAU To Meet Monday Night The first meeting of the year for the Zebulon Farm Bureau will be held Monday night, October 13, at Wakelon School, and several things of great importance are on the agenda, according to Robert Ed Horton, who urged every mem ber to be present. Ed Ellington will show a color film on pstures during the pro gram. The picture is an educa tional production and will be helpful to all farmers. It is estimated that about $3,500 will be required to purchase the bus, which will be used whenever needed for the school program. Carrying 60 passengers, it will be large enough for large groups. In addition to school trips, the bus will be available for civic and church groups, including the Boy and Girl Scouts, Sunday School classes, clubs, and others who need group transportation. The Wakelon Parent-Teacher Association chose the purchase of an activities bus as its project for this year. The need for the bus has been growing for years. For the past three years the Wendell activities bus has been rented fre quently. The bundle of tobacco project is the first money-raising campaign planned by the PTA, which hopes to purchase the bus before the school year is over. Gift to Campbell C. V. Whitley of Zebulon was featured in the last issue of Creek Pebbles, Campbell College student newspaper, for his generosity in contributing over $5,000 to Camp bell’s Expansion Program. Mr. Whitley is a member of the Camp bell College Board of Trustees. The student newspaper story cites Mr. Whitley’s record in help ing young people The Woman’s Auxiliary will meet with Miss Palmer in the Home Economics building. Mrs. Harold Green, president of the Auxiliary, has invited all the members to at tend. Announce Birth Mr. and Mrs. Crafton Hudson announce the birth of a daughter on Monday afternoon, October 6, in Rex Hospital, Raleigh. Zebulon, N. C., Friday, October 10, 1952 Merchants to Handle Solicitors In Own Manner Merchants of Zebulon will con tinue to handle solicitors any way they can, it was decided at a special call meeting held Monday i night in the Zebulon Recorder’s I Court room. Nearly 50 merchants and businessmen attended the meeting, and spirited discussion took place before a vote was tak en. The meeting was called by fol lowing numerous visits by a horde of high school students sell ing advertising in student newspa pers, annuals and other school publications. Since the trade areas served by different businesses is different, the opinion was expressed at the meeting that each merchant could best solve his own problem as to which schools and organizations will receive his contribution. As an example, it was explained that automobile and wholesale grocery dealers have trade areas which extend further from Zebu lon than do grocery and fertilizer dealers. During the past month, repre sentatives from schools are far away as Spring Hope have visit ed Zebulon businessmen seeking i advertisements and contributions. Many merchants have declined to j advertise with any schools because I of the growing demand for contri i butions. Teenagers to Meet Saturday Night The Zebulon Teen Club will meet at the old court house on Saturday evening to consider plans for the coming year. A con flict on the community calendar made it impossible to organize last week, but the organization will be effected on Saturday evening. The teenagers engaged in house cleaning activities last week in an effort to make the clubroom more presentable. The need for some floor lamps, records and recreation equipment has been noted. Support of the Zebulon Com munity Chest includes support of the Teen Club. ft Harold Green Has Modern Dairy Farm The latest word in scientific dairy farming can be found at the Harold Green farm on Route 4. Green, a successful tobacco far mer, received a loan for the pur pose of building a new milking parlor and pole barn, both of which have been completed this week. In switching from weed growing to dairy farming, Green is install ing all-electrical milking equip ment as approved by the Wake County Board of Health. No ope ration, from the actual milking of the cows to bottling the milk, is done by human hands. The pole barn is attached to the milking parlor to protect cows from inclement weather. August Arrests : • 1 The State Highway Patrol made 12,274 arrests in August, inspected 123,709 drivers’ licenses, issued 10,144 warning tickets and investi gated 8,417 complaints. Men of the patrol spent 146,416 hours on duty and traveled 1,885,- 866 miles in the discharge of their duties. WINS AWARD * jjsfc " - . M.'J Joellen Gill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irby D. Gill of Zebulon, has been awarded her Instructors Cer tificate from the American Red Cross National Aquatic School. She is a student at W.C.U.N.C., Greens boro. Menus Listed for Wakelon School The following menus will be served to the students of the Wakelon School beginning Mon day, Oct. 13th. Changes will be made if items planned are unob tainable. MONDAY: Salmon salad, garden peas, creamed potatoes, peach halves, bread and milk TUESDAY: Baked ham, string beans, stewed corn, applesauce, bread and milk WEDNESDAY: Macaroni and cheese, vegetable salad, butter beans, fruit jello in cups, bread and milk THURSDAY: Meat loaf and gravy, garden peas, creamed po tatoes, bread and milk FRIDAY: Vegetable soup, pi mento cheese sandwiches, ice cream, crackers and milk. Lions Plan to Peddle Brooms Saturday Next Thursdy night the Zebu lon Lions will meet and eat, and then the Lions will roar over Zeb ulon peddling brooms insteads of having a program, according to President Wilbur Debnam. The brooms are made by the Guilford Industries for the Blind. Proceeds from the broom sale will be used to* purchase glasses for students at Wakelon School, assist in the special education pro gram, and help pay the salary of Miss Doris Eason, blind case work er for Wake County. Battle Corbett is chairman of the broom sale. Reception to Be Held Here for 58 New Baptist Church Members A reception for the fifty-eight new members received into the Zebulon Baptist Church during the past church year will be held fol lowing the evening service Sunday. The church hostess committee, un der the leadership of Mrs. A. S. Hinton will complete arrangements for the reception. The church will meet in busi ness session on Sundy evening to hear reports from activities of the past year. The annual letter to the Association reports 31 bap Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Sonny Coley Wins Top Honors at Lions Talent Show An enthusiastic crowd saw little Sonny Coley of Knightdale walk off with top honors in the first Lions Talent Show held in the Wakelon auditorium Saturday eve ning. The money received from the series of amateur contests will be used to assist Miss Rebecca Talbert’s special education pro gram at Wakelon. The Live Oak Quarter of Selma took second place and Carolyn Hinton of Zebulon won third place in the talent show. Honorable mention went to Bob by, Sawyer, Joan Baker, Blandy Privette, and Jackie Bragg of Bailey. These four winners will appear again tomorrov night in the competition. Heading the list of talented per formers this week will be the Ren fro Trio of Middlesex, Dorothy Strickland and Quartet of Mid dlesex, Steve Creech and Connie Fulghum of Middlesex; Shirley Creech, soloist, Janet Weaver, soloist, the Marsh Knott Tub Band, Jane Welfs of Wendell, and the Baker Trio of Hopkins Chapel. Sonny Coley will appear as a guest performer during the pro gram. The winner of the beauty contest held last Saturday night was Lu cille Boykin of Glendale School. The lovely Miss Boykin was pre sented an engraved trophy. Second place was captured by Ellen Bat ten of Bunn School. She was given an orchid corsage. Boxes of candy were given the other five contest ants. Zebulon Chamber Ends Campaign Active solicitation for member ships in the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce ended yesterday, ac cording to President Ed Hales, and reports of solicitors were to be made last night at a meeting of the Board of Directors. Merchants, businessmen, and others who were not contacted dur ing the past week are urged to notify any member of the Cham ber of Commerce that they want to join the group. Special Edition A delay of one week may be ne cessary in publishing the special community edition of the Zebulon Record because of the slowness ex hibited by merchants in returning questionaires prepared by the Rec ord and the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce. tisms, a church membership of 624, Sunday School membership of 585, Training Union membership of 95, W. The morning worship service will center on the theme of our Christian stewardship. The pastor will preach on this theme and the Sanctuary Choir will sing, “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Johann Sebastian Bach.
