FOUNDED IN GEORGIA IN 1912 Girl Scouts Celebrate Anniversary Girl Scouting, founded by Mrs. Juliet Low of Savannah, Ga., in 1912, observes its 41st anniver sary this week and Zebulon Gifl Scouts are joining in the nation wide celebration with special events which began last Satur day at the Governor's mansion in Raleigh. Mrs. Thurman Murray and daughter, Pat, were guests at the governor’s mansion Saturday when Mrs. William Umstead received the visitors and explained the new “Our Country” Girl Scout badge. On Sunday morning the Zebulon troops attended morning worship Zebulon History Incites Additional Praise; Aid Offered for Town Growth Another large concern has noti fied Ed Hales, president of the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce, that it found Mayor Worth Hin ton’s history of Zebulon interest ing. J. F. Dalton, Director of In dustrial and Agricultural Develop ment for the Norfolk Southern Railroad, was complimentary in his comments on the reprint of the Zebulon Record feature, and prom ised the railroad’s assistance in se curing industry for Zebulon. The reprints are being mailed out by many Zebulon businesses to out-of-state concerns with which they correspond. Mr. Dalton’s letter said in part: “We feel that Zebulon is indeed a very important community, and we are accordingly interested in ren dering every assistance within our power to bring about developments in your community. We desire that you command our services at any time, and it is suggested that if and when you receive inquiries direct from prospects you call upon us for assistance.” The letter continued, “We find many industries are interested es pecially in one-story building al ready available, which may be leased under mutually satisfactory terms and conditions. A number of Sfc. Walter Bailey Stationed in Germany Sergeant First Class Walter C. Bailey, whose wife, Ruby, lives on Route 1, Lawrenceville, 111., is now serving with the 43rd Infan try Division in Germany. SFC Bailey, a supply sergeant in Company L, 102nd Infantry Regiment, joined the 43rd last month. Bailey, who father, Mr. Donnie Bailey, lives on Route 1, Middle sex, has been in the Army since 1948. Two Zebulon Girls Make Honor Roll Top ranking''students at Wo man’s College of U. N. C. for the first semester have been listed fol lowing a tabulation of academic grades, showing 202 students on the honor roll. Among students on the honor roll were: Ruth Brown, Senior; and Joellen Gill, Sophomore; both of Zebulon. The honor roll is composed of 12 per cent of seniors and juniors, ten per cent of sophomores and eight per cent of freshmen who made the greatest number of qual ily points during the semester. services at the Zebulon Baptist Church. The day before, the Intermediate Troop began their anniversary celebration by making a trip to Raleigh for skating. The Woodmen of the World Camp is feting the Girl Scouts at a wiener roast Wednesday eve ning. Members of the Boy Scout Troop will be guests also. Girl Scouting gives girls an op portunity to develop their talents through eleven lines of endeavor. In this community it provides the only year-round supervised rec reation for girls. Mrs. Frederick Chamblee is inquiries relate to sewing mills, and similar textile operations.” In citing requirements by the larger plants, Mr. Dalton said, “Still, large industries are inter ested in a water supply and waste material disposal. Some industries are interested in a good supply of well water, and still other re quire a large supply of river wa- | ter.” The success the Town of Wen dell experienced in attracting in dustry by providing a building was brought to mind by the rail road man’s statement that “some j of the communities in the state have organized companies that are j prepared to construct buildings and lease to suitable tenants under a long term lease on basis of li quidating substantially the entire investment during the initial term, and at the same time yield return sufficient to cover taxes, i insurance, maintenance, and a fair return on the capital invested.” One of the goals desired by the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce is locating new business in this com munity. Red Cross Fund Campaign Poster for 1953 The “marching Flags” poster of the late N. C. Wyeth, first used by the Red Cross in 1933 and repeated in 1947, will be used again as the poster of the 1953 Fund Campaign because of its great popularity. Repeated also is last year’s slogan, “Answer the Call.” Zebulon, N. C., Tuesday, March 10, 1953 Zebulon’s representative on the Girl Scout Council. Other local leaders include Mrs. James Creech, Brownie Troop leader; Mrs. Thur man Murray and Mrs. Horace Gay, Intermediate Troop leader; and Mrs. Doris Privett, Senior Troop. Mrs. Doris Privett was the or ganizer of Girl Scouting in Zebu lon, and last year was honored with a 5-year Service Badge for her work. Plans are being made now for the Day Camp to be held this sum mer at Lake Mirl. Last year’s camp was so successful that the Troop leaders are preparing each week for this year’s work. Rural Fire Truck to Be Seen in Six Rural Areas During Week Several demonstrations of a ru ral fire truck have been arranged for communities surrounding Zeb ulon, according to Robert Edd Hor ton, chairman of the Rural Fire Department Project in the Finer Carolina Contest. A fire truck has been obtained similar to the one planned for Zebulon, and this equipment will visit a half dozen sections three days of this week. Whenever possible, the demon stration will be made by fighting fires set in old, abandoned build ings, according to Willie B. Hop kins. On Tuesday night the truck will stage a demonstration at Pilot at 7:30 and at Pearces at 8:30. Wednesday night the truck will be a Lizard Lick at 7:30 and at Martins Center at 8:30. On Thursday night a demonstra tion will be held at Murray Town at 7:30 and at Ferrells School at 8:00. Anyone living in any of the six ccmmunities who has an old build ing which they ate willing to burn is asked to contact any member of the Rural Fire Department so that it can be used for the demon stration. Rabies Vaccination Clinics Planned In Wake County Beginning April 1 Rabies vaccination clinics will be held at strategic locations in Wake County beginning April 1, accord ing to Dr. A. C. Bulla, Wake Coun ty Health Officer, who said the clinics will continue through April 15. Veterinarians in the county are cooperating with the Health Department in the clinics. The law provides that an oppor- Community Is Saddened By Unexpected Death 0( John Green Kemp The entire community was sad dened early Sunday morning when it learned that John Green Kemp, 69, had died in his sleep Saturday night. Mr. Kemp was a valuable and honored member of the community, taking part in church and civic activities for many years. At the time of his death he head ed J. A. Kemp & Son, and was treasurer of the Zebulon Baptist Church. Funeral services were held yes terday afternoon at the Zebulon Baptist Church at 4 p. m., conduct ed by Dr. George J. Griffin, for mer pastor. Burial was in the Zeb ulon cemetery. Surviving are his wife, the for mer Lily Biscoe Kemp; three daughters, Mrs. James E: Allen of Myrtle Beach, S. C., Mrs. James Rosenstack of Petersburg, Flori da, and Mrs. Bruce Hodges, Jr., of Gastonia; two brothers, D. P. of Raleigh and Tom B. Kemp of New York City; a sister. Mrs. John Hor ton of Zebulon; four grandchildren. Lions Hear Discussion By Scouting Leader The Zebulon Lions Club, spon sor of the Girl Scout Troops in this community was told the responsi bilities involved in sponsoring the Troops by Mrs. S. M. Young, Jr., of Raleigh, Council executive. Pro motional work with the troops was emphasized by the speaker. Mrs. Ruth Chamblee, representa tive of this community on the Council, was a guest for the meet ing, which was held last Thurs day night in the recreation room of the Zebulon Methodist Church, j A zone meeting attended by rep- j resentatives of the Wendell, Wake j v orest, Rolesville, and Zebulon j clubs was held following the pro- j "ram. Grading at Armory Site Is in Progress Grading is expected to be com pleted this week on the Zebulon National Guard armory site, and Captain R. E. Shelden, Budget Bu reau engineer, reported that bids will be requested on the building immediately upon completion of the grading.. Millard Duke, Zebu lon contractor, was successful bid der for the grading work. The entire front of the site is being leveled. The graded area will front 255 feet on Arendell Avenue, extending back 300 feet from the street. About 2,500 yards of dirt must be moved. The armory will be located 100 feet back from the street and about 40 feet from the North side of the lot. The south side of the lot, where a 4% -foot fill is necessary to level the site, will be used for parking. Theo. Wednesday, April 1, the clinic will be held at Gay’s Store on Route 64, and Wake Cross Roads, and New Hill Store. Riley’s Store at County Line will have a clinic Wednesday, Ap ril 8; and Hopkins Store at Hopkins Cross Roads will have a clinic on Monday, April 13. Handbills publicizing the clinics and listing the dates for all the clinics in the county are being dis tributed by the health department. Dr. Richard Spring of Zebulon is one of the eight veterinarians co operating in the campaign, con ducting clinics at Gay’s Store, Eagle Rock, Zebulon, Hopkins Cross Roads, Bethlehem Church on the Poole Road, Riley’s Store, Ray bon’s Store, and Kelly’s Store on Highway 70. Rotarians Hear Trio Os Talented Pianists A varied and enjoyable pro gram was presented at the Friday night meeting of the Zebulon Rot ary Club by Secretary Rodney Mc- Nabb. Three piano pupils of Mrs. McNabb played several selections and then Rodney conducted a quiz program on the State of North Car olina. The talented pianists included Peggy Greene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hilliard Greene, Sr., Judith Hood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hood, and Robert Jenkins, son of Mrs. J. R. Buffalo. The Rotary Club will meet at the Corinth School Friday night, j where the seniors are serving a special supper. National 4-H Club Week Is Observed March 7-15 is National 4-H | Club Week. In North Carolina, | there is a total membership of 140,- j 000, and in Wake County there is a membership of 1.500 boys and girls in the county’s twenty-six | clubs. The 4-H club is designed for ru ral boys and girls to teach them modern farming and homemaking practices, to develop leadership, to develop better personality, and to mold better citizens. President of the Wakelon Junior Club is Micky Phillips. President of the Wakelon Senior Club is Ruth Temple. Building and Loan Meeting Thursday A special meeting will be held Thursday evening at 8 o’clock to discuss plans for organizing a Building and I>oan Assocaition in Zebulon.
