CUCUMBER GRADING STATION m : **.. ■*£*•-.- r . ... A new business came to Zebulon this spring when J. Raleigh Alford agreed to serve as buyer for the Mount Olive Pickle Company and constructed the grading station pictured above. Davis Sons, Publishers Thoo Cannady Is First Entrant in 1953 Election Campaign Politics began to thaw out in Zebulon this week, despite the cold snap which struck Wednesday. Armstrong Cannady broke the ice by filing his candidacy for Town Commissioner, and speculation in creased in the expected contest for the office of mayor. Two years ago Cannady lost a close race in the commissioners’ contest, his first bid for political office. “My friends told me I came out too late two years ago,” he said Wednesday, “and I’m not making that mistake this year.” In a prepared statement, Can nady expressed his platform as follows: Your strong vote for me in our last city election has prompted me to join the race again this year. I would like to take this opportun ity to thank you again for the fine support you gave me and to ask for it again this year. If elected I will do everything in my power to make Zebulon a better place to live. I am for a pro gressive program to beautify and strengthen our town business-wise. We have come a long way during my six year stay here and our goal is unlimited as to how far we can and need to go. I believe that my present job as salesman which carries me over 1100 miles of Eastern North Caro lina each week and into many towns our size can bring new ideas and plans to our community which are badly needed at this time. Among the many things which I will strive to achieve are: Platform Planks Given 1. To stop unauthorized solici tation of funds from our merchants by every Tom Dick and Harry Or ganization. 2. To enforce all of the town or dinances or strike them from the books. 3. To search for away to reduce the town tax rate without reduc ing efficiency. 4. To provide extra protection for school children to and from school. 5. To advertise the advantages and opportunities for big business in Zebulon in State publications. 6. To develop and maintain a de cent garbage and trash disposal service. 7. To enforce the Sunday Law. 8. To beautify our town through paving and planting of trees and shrubs. 9. To stop down town peddling when in direct competition to our merchants. 10. To keep my mind open to suggestions offered by the people of Zebulon. My only wish in seeking this of fice is to return in part the blessing I have received in Zebulon through my service to the com munity. Dalton Pearce Enlists In National Guard Dalton Pearce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivon Pearce, joined his bro ther in the Zebulon National Guard unit ilast Monday night when he enlisted in Battery A.
