Os Spirited Campaign ;
Eleven Men Are Hopeful
When Ferd Davis resigned his position on the North Carolina
Board of Conservation and Development to run against Incumbent
Worth Hinton, who had previously announced his intention to seek
re-election to the post of Mayor, he changed the tranquil scene into
a spirited campaign which has caused intense interest during the
two weeks since Davis announced
his candidacy.
Mayor Hinton is basing his cam
paign for re-election on the ac
; complishments of the Zebulon
I community during the past two
| years and on a ten-point plan for
the next two years which he pro
poses to follow if re-elected.
Hinton stated in letters and an
advertisement that among other
things he plans, if re-elected,
twice-weekly garbage collection,
more paved streets and sidewalks,
beautification of the town, a ceme
tery and sidewalk program, efforts
to obtain a hospital and park de
velopment.
Davis has cited several Instances
where his experience and qualifi
cations will benefit the town, in
cluding the proper administration
of the duties and responsibilities
delegated a mayor.
Tax Reduction
Davis promised careful and dili
gent attention to municipal af
fairs, including budget matters,
which are a direct responsibility
of the mayor. He pledged special
attention to tax reduction.
“I have always been told,” Davis
said, “that two things we shall
always have with us are death and
taxbs. I propose to postpone death
as long as I can, and keep taxes
as low as possible.”
Statements by the two candi
dates are published in this issue
of he Record.
Commissioners’ Race
There are just five of them that
can be elected, according to the
laws of the Totvn of Zebulon, so
Tuesday night there’ll be four ra
ttyer disappointed ex-candidates
following one of the most spirit
ed campaigns in recent years in
Zebulon. None of the nine hopefuls
expressed too much optimism yes
terday over the outcome of the
election, but all figured they had
a chance to occupy one of the five
seats at stake.
During the campaign no big is
sues were raised by the candidates
for a place on the Town Board
over what the incumbents have
done during the present adminis
tration. The chief plank in the
published platforms cited what
has not been done and what should
be done during the coming two
years.
The incumbents were willing to
stand on their records made dur
ing the past two years, and sever
al itemized the program they hope
to accomplish during the next ad
ministration.
Good Things Ahead
If campaign promises made by
candidates for Commissioner are
carried out, the Town of Zebulon
during the coming two years is
going to attempt unusual activity
in the fields of street paving, side
walk paving, cemetery improve- \
ments, and getting a dollars worth
for every dollar spent.
On the official ballots, the posi
tion of the names of every candi
date was changed so that each !
candidate for commissioner had
his name appear in each position
on the ballot the same number
of times and each candidate for
mayor had his name appear first ;
an equal number of times.
