Haywood Jones Is Speaker at Rotary; Tells of Digitalis To illustrate the many inter esting aspects of his work as pharmacist, Haywood Jones told the members of the Zebulon Rot ary Club last Friday night about digitalis, commonly called fox glove, which has gained world re nown for its use as a heart stimu lant particularly useful in treating dropsy. The drug may be administered in many forms, and Haywood had samples of pure digitalis, capsules, liquid, and tablets for examination by his audience. Dr. Ben Thomas reported that the effects of digitalis are one of the most dramatic of any drug. Some people subject to attacks of dropsy must take doses contnu ally. The drug slows and strength ens the heart beat, providing bet ter circulation. In answer to the question of what effect digitalis would have on a well person, the speaker re ported it would likely produce nausea which will wear off. Dr. Olin T. Binkley of Wake For est was a visitor at the meeting, which was held in the Wakelon home economics building following the P. T. A. barbecue. Corsages Given By Local Theatre Corsages were awarded by Wakelon Theatre through Wakelon Florist on Mothers’ Day to the old est and youngest mothers present. Mrs. J. E. Wright, oldest mother, and Ruby Leach, youngest, were presented red carnation corsages. The occasion was the visit by Wakelon Seniors who were on their annual tour of Washington Among those photographed in the Palace of Splendors are, first row, left to right: Ed Ellington, agriculture teacher; Mrs. Doris McNabb, Smith Pupils To Appear in Recital The piano and organ students of Mrs. R. C. McNabb and Miss Carol Smith will give a recital at the Zebulon Baptist Church on Tuesday May 19, at 8 o’clock. The students are Betsy Alford, Betsy Brantley, Pat Brantley, Ka tie Joyce Eddins, Peggy Greene, Zelma Greene, Judith Hood, Rob ert Jenkins, Carmack McNabb, Harriet Page, Larry Page, Dottie Privette, Gardner Temple, Jenny Vee Watkins and Martha Watkins. Carolyn Hinton, a student of Mrs. Kenneth Herndon, will also present several piano numbers. PROMOTED While serving aboard the de stroyer USS Brown, it is an ad vancement in rating to seaman, USN, for Joseph C. Oakley, of Route 1, Zebulon. Oakley entered the Navy in Dec. 1951, and received his recruit training at the U. S. Naval Train ing Center, San Diego, Calif. WINS TRIP William Bunn is finding there’s more than just financial reward in selling Philco Television sets. Because of his success in sales and installation of the Philco sets, Wil liam was informed this week that he and his wife will be award ed an expense-paid vacation week at Atlantic City, New Jersey be ginning June 7. The new Philco All-Channel Television sets are on display at Bunn Electric Company now, and are factory equipped to receive all TV stations. Zebulon, N. Rites to Be Held Today for Mrs. R. M. Hagwood Funeral services will be conduct ed this morning at 11 a. m. from the Knightdale Baptist Church for Mrs. R. M. Hagwood, who died Sunday at 2 p. m. at her home in Knightdale after several months of illness. The Rev. Charles B. Summey will be in charge of the services, and burial will be in the Knightdale cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to ser vices. Nephews will serve as pall bearers. Survivors Listed ! Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. W. C. Harrell, Jr., Raleigh, and Mrs. Samuel J. Da ; vis, Wendell; three sisters, Mrs. Alvis Rogers of Creedmoor, Mrs. C. B. Pace of Zebulon, and Mrs. Carroll Joyner of Spring Hope; two brothers, Fred Mangum and Harold Mangum of Zebulon; and one grandchild. Mrs. Hagwood was the daugh ter of the late Samuel P. and An nie Jones Mangum of Granville County. Soil Conservation Awards Planned Presentation of prizes to the win ners in the Soil Conservation Pos ter Contest will take place in the 1 Wakelon auditorium on Wednes day morning May 13, at 10:30 o’- clock, according to G. L. Winches ter. The public is invited to attend the presentation. Boy kin, Shirley Rogers, Frances,Ed wards, Peggy Weathers, Mildred Fowler, Derward Baker, John Phil lips, Sue Richards, Ronnie Rich- Commencement Exercises Listed For Rolesville School This Year The Commencement season at the Rolesville School began on Friday, April 24, when members of the Senior class presented “Stranger in the Night,” a mystery comedy, to a large and apprecia tive audience. On Friday, May 1, the element ary music pupils of Miss Ann Cox presented their annual recital. The school auditorium was attractively decorated for the occasion and the children played to a host of inter ested friends. On Friday, May 8, the high school music pupils of Miss Ann Cox presented their annual recit al. This recital was held at 8 o’- clock in the school auditorium. Friday, May 15, at 8 o’clock p. m. has been designated as the time for the elementary pupils of Mr. Hill to be presented in a music recital. At this time Mr. Hill will feature also special selections by his Senior Glee Club. On Sunday, May 24, at 11 a. m. the baccalaureate message will be ! delivered to the Senior Class by Rev. W. C. Barham of the Roles ! ville community. Special vocal se lections will be rendered by the Senior Glee Club. The Senior Class will be pre sented in its annual Class Night exercise on Thursday evening May 28 at 8 p. m. The Wishing Well motif will be used, and fea tured on the program will be the valedictorian, Miss Olga Lea Wall and the salutatorian, Miss Nancy Jane Hailey. Massey To Speak Today A report of the Woman’s Club Convention held at Wrightsville Beach will be made by Mrs. L. M. Massey at the meeting of the Zebulon Woman’s Club to be held this afternoon at 3:45 in the Club House. The date of the meeting was changed from May 19. This is the final meeting of the club year and members are urged to be present. * Hostesses are Mrs. Massey, Mrs. R. H. Herring, Mrs. N. R. Gill, and Mrs. F. D. Finch. Club Raises Funds The elephants and the clowns, coupled with expert salesmanship by the club members, produced over $68.00 for the Zebulon Junior Woman’s Club last week as the club’s part of the receipts from advance ticket sales for the Beers- Barnes Circus. The Junior Woman’s Club each summer sponsors groups of Brow nie Scouts at camp during the sum mer.
