Cooperation Held Essential to Good Garbage Service If the citizens of Zebulon will give their cooperation, twice weekly garbage collection will be a reality, Willie B. Hopkins re ported Wednesday following the first two days of the new collection schedule. And the citizens of Zeb ulon will have to give their coop eration or their garbage just won’t be collected, he added. Os the first 96 homes visited on Monday, he said, the garbage col lection crew found exactly six garbage cans, in spite of notifica tion and publication of the town ordinance requiring the cans. By the last of next week a schedule of collection will be worked out so that housewives in different parts of town may know when to expect the truck in their neighborhood. Garbage collection will be made first on Monday and Tuesday, and a second collection will be made on Thursday and Friday. Wednes day will be used to collect brush, sticks, prunings, and similar mater ial which is not collected in the garbage cans. But these garbage cans must be bought, Town Manager Hopkins warned. He said that bushel bas kets, pasteboard boxes, and 50-gal lon drums will not be suitable in the future. Round and Square Dance Here Tonight By Bill Alheim Tonight from 8-11 p. m. the Rec reation Department is sponsoring a round and square dance at the Wakelon High School Gymnasium. The price of admission will be any amount you would like to donate. Boxes for donations will be placed at each entrance. The dance is a non-profit social function and any proceeds taken will go to improve our recreation program here in Zebulon. Young and old alike are cordially invited to attend the dance. If this dance proves to be a success other dances will be held in the near future. Liquor and Traffic Violations Fill Local Court Docket Wednesday Whiskey and speeding caused the most cases on the docket of Judge Irby Gill’s Recorder’s Court on Wednesday, in another long ses sion which saw liberal fines lev ied. Only one defendant was found not guilty of a charge against him, but on two other counts he had to pay fines and costs. Anthony G. Frances of Green ville, S. C., was found not guilty of driving without a license. How ever, he paid $25 and costs for having improper lights and S4O and costs for speeding. Other cases of speeding cost Dennis Warren Liles of Zebulon SSO and costs; Isam Holman, Jr., of Route 4, SSO and costs; James Holman of Newark, N. J., SSO and costs; and Coil Douglas Perry of Wake Forest, Route 2, paid sls and costs and is not to operate a motor vehicle for 60 days. For passing on a curve Joseph A. Lambeth of Raleigh, Route 5, paid $25 and costs. For failing to stop at a stop sign, Patricia Gayle Privette was taxed the costs. TOP LION Hl* ..>*3l lHkH^v jpg S. A. Dodge, Detroit, Michigan, new president of The International Association of Lions Club (Lions International), was elected by unanimous vote at the 36th annu al convention of the Association which closes at the Chicago Sta dium tomorrow. Studio to Take Zebulon Photos Laws Studio of Raleigh will have a photographer in Zebulon at the Woman’s Club on Wednesday and Thursday of next week to photograph men and women of Zebulon. The pictures will be used to enlarge and bring up to date the photographic library of the Zebu lon Record, used in illustrating news stories. The photographer will be pres ent from 10 a. m. until 8 p. m. both days. Each sitting will take about 10 minutes. No Obligation Involved No obligation is involved for those having pictures made. Glos sy prints will be furnished their newspaper for its use, and the person photographed will be giv en an opportunity to purchase ad ditional portraits made from the negatives. Appointments are not necessary, but for those who prefer some particular time they may be made by calling the Zebulon Record of fice, number 4231. A fine of $25 and costs was charged Frank Perry, Jr., of Route 4, for driving with no clearance lights. Sam Squarewell of Wake For est received a sentence of eight months when convicted of posses sion of non-taxpaid whiskey. The sentence was suspended upon pay ment of S3OO fine and costs. Convection for public drunken ness cost Furney H. Perry of Knightdale the costs; George Brown of Raleigh $lO fine and costs; and prayer for judgment was continued until July 22 for James Brantley of Zebulon and until Sep tember 23 for Chester Faison of Route 4. Abishai Roberts of Baltimore was sentenced to four months sus pended upon payment of $l5O fine and costs for possession of non taxpaid whiskey, and to four months suspended upon payment of SIOO fine and costs for drunk en driving. $ Carroll Pippin of Raleigh was ordered to pay the costs for giving (Continued on Page 5) Zebulon, N. C M Friday, July 10, 1953 Zebulon Tax Rate Held at Same Figure; Board Orders Audit of Municipal Books Recreation Group Members Named The town budget was approved, an auditor hired, and an appoint ment to the Recreation Commis sion made by the Board of Com missioners of the Town of Zebu lon Monday night. Present at the meeting were Mayor Worth Hin ton; Town Attorney Foster D. Finch; Clerk Willie B. Hopkins; and Commissioners R. Vance Brown, Howard Beck, R. Wesley Liles, Wilbur Debnam, and Frank Wall. Approved as Auditor R. L. Steele and Company of Raleigh were approved as audi tors of the town’s books, on mo tion by Vance Brown. The fee paid is not to exceed S3OO. The budget was adopted on mo tion by Brown, seconded by Frank Wall. Wesley Liles’ resignation from the Recreation Commission was accepted, and Howard Beck was appointed to complete his term. C. V. Whitley and Bev. Asbury were appointed to the Recreation Commission for three-year terms. TV Reception Is Exceptionally Good Contrary to what had been ex pected, the test pattern from Ral eigh’s new television station, WNAO-TV, was received excep tionally well in Zebulon, according to William Bunn, local radio deal er and repairman. Using a simple corner-reflector antenna hastily mounted on a chimney, Bunn had perfect reception from the UHF station. During the test transmission Wednesday afternoon, the TV sta tion used only 350 watts power. During the regular telecast, it will transmit with 1,000 watts power. The test pattern Wednesday in cluded a picture of the State Cap ital in Raleigh. Barbecue Dinner The Boy Scouts are going to have a father-son barbecue dinner Sunday, July 12, at the Scout Hut. Scouting activities will start at 3:00. All Scouts and their fathers are invited and the dinner will cost 50c each. LEGION HEARS OF LIBRARY Local Auxiliary Honors The Zebulon American Legion Auxiliary honored their husbands at a chicken barbecue supper Wed nesday night at E. P. Privette’s Case, and guest speakers were Helen Faye Todd and Ann Strick land, delegates this year to Girl’s State, held at Greensboro. The two girls, rising seniors at Wakelon School, described the week as one of the most enjoy able they have ever known. Lec tures, elections, and visits to Duke, the State capital, and Chapel Hill took most of their time. Girls State is an American Le gion Auxiliary project. The local IN SERVICE Ti ' Wilbur R. Boykin, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Boykin, Route 3, Zebulon, is completing his AF basic airmen indoctrination course at Lackland Air Force Base, the “Gateway to the Air Force,’’ in Texas. Swimming Class Set at Lake Glad A learn-to-swim class, sponsor ed by the Wake County Chapter of the American Red Cross, will begin Monday, July 13, at Lake Glad just south of Wendell, con tinuing for two weeks, Louis Gray, director of water safety for Wake County, stated this week. The classes are open for children ages seven through 15 years, and adult classes will be taught if it is requested. Registration cards are available from Bill Alheim, Zebulon recrea tion director, at the Wakelon play ground. These cards will be pre sented at Lake Glad on the first day of the course. Instructions Free No charge, either for instruction or for swimming, will be made to students, who are requested to bring their own towels. Louis Gray and Bob Duke of Raleigh were in Zebulon Monday afternoon making arrangements for the classes. Transportation to Lake Glad must be furnished by this com munity. The classes begin at 10:30 each day Monday through Friday, and last for one hour. unit sends two delegates each year from Wakelon. A report on the progress made this year by the Zebulon Commun ity Library was made by Mrs. Ralph Bunn, who complimented the American Legion on the num ber of books its members have solicited for the library. Community Library The Zebulon Community Libra ry, a Finer Carolina project being promoted by the American Legion Auxiliary, recorded a new rec ord of 79 books being drawn last Wednesday afternoon, according to Mrs. Ralph Bunn. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers. Willie B. Gets Boost in Salary Zebulon expects to collect from taxes and other sources a total of $62,236.10 during the fiscal year 1953-54, and it will take every penny of it to operate the town, according to the budget approved by Board of Commissioners at the July meeting of the group held held Monday night in the clerk’s office. The tax rate will remain at $1.85, the commissioners decided. The general fund will require sl.- 25 of this and debt service will take the other 60 cents. The new budget includes a raise for Town Clerk W. B. Hopkins from $3,900 a year to $4,200. Oth er administrative costs include $3,- 000 for an office clerk, S4BO for mayor’s salary, and S6OO for com missioners’ salaries. Police Expenditures The police department calls for expenditures of $6,470, including $5,700 in salaries. The fire department will receive $1,075, with salaries requiring $650. Other expenditures include the water department, $5,814; capital outlay, including a new garbage truck, $7,555.86; municipal build ing, $950.00; streets, $10,475; and sanitary department, $5,780. $11306.24 Debt Service Debt service will account for $11,306.24 of the town’s expendi tures. This includes payment on the bonds of $7,000, and interest of $4,266.24. Powell Bill money anticipated by the Town for this year amounts to $4,744.56. Taxable property valuation of the town increased to $2,013,495.00, with anticipated property taxes of $37,249.65. Baptist Services “A New Persecution’’ will be the title of the Rev. Bev. A. Asbury’s sermon Sunday morning at the Zebulon Baptist Church. The adult choir will sing “The Lord Is a Mighty God” by Schumann. At the evening service the pas tor will speak on “What Is the Fitting Thing” and Johnsey P. Arnold will sing “I Have Not Seen,” from “The Holy City” by Gaul. Husbands The library now has over 800 volumes, about 500 more than were available at the beginning of the year. Members of the Auxiliary are on duty at the library Tuesday night, Wednesday afternoon, and Friday night of each week. A large selec tion of excellent books are on the shelves. The Olivia Rainey Library of Raleigh is cooperating with the Zebulon Community Library by lending it 25 volumes. If these books are used by readers in this community, additional volumes may be borrowed.
