THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume XXVII. Number 86. Governor Umstead to Be In Zebulon for Assembly On Industry August 18 Governor William B. Umstead will make the keynote address at the first of a series of development forums to be held throughout the State during the next six months in the stepped-up efforts to bring more new industries to North Car olina, Director Ben E. Douglas of the Department of Conservation and Development announced yes terday. First Forum Here The first, which is to be at Zebu lon in the auditorium of the Wake lon school, starts at 7:30 p. m., August 18, and is open to the gen eral public. It is the first of ten such forums to be conducted throughout the State by the State Board of Conservation and Devel opments’ Commerce and Industry Committee of which Robert M. Hanes of Winston-Salem, president of the Wachovia Bank & Trust Co., is chairman. Although the Zebulon meeting is being held primarily for the benefit of industry-minded resi dents of Wake, Wayne, Johnston, Wilson, Nash, Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties, it is open to the general public, Hanes emphasized. Town Officials Invited Hanes said special invitations are being sent to mayors, town boards, city councilmen, county commissioners, members of Cham ber of Commerce, city managers, promotional groups, and civic club members urging them to at tend the Zebulon meeting. Hanes said the second forum will likely be held somewhere in the western part of the State. The third will Little League Game To Be Played Tonight The Zebulon Little League ball team will meet Buckhorne on the Wakelon diamond Friday night at 8 o’clock, according to Willie Griswold, manager. This will be the first baseball game under the lights for the local nine, who have won two from the Buckhorne team in league play this year. Buddy Tippett is scheduled to pitch for Zebulon. Three National Guardsmen Given Promotions; Charles Clark Enlists The promotions to the rank of Sergeant First Class were an nounced Monday night for Baxter Hopkins and Ralph Creech, mem bers of Zebulon’s Battery A. The National Guardsmen now hold the second highest rank possible for enlisted -Sfc. Creech enlisted in the unit soon after its organization began. He had one year service with the Navy before joining the National Guard, and has served as gunner and chief of section for 3% years. Sfc. Hopkins had no prior ser vice when he enlisted in the Na tional Guard on August % 1950. During his three years of Nation al Guard service, he has earned five promotions through his at tention to duty and his off-duty study of correspondence courses prepared by the Army. Both men earned commendations for their work at Ft. McClellan be held somewhere in the Pied mont area. “These forums,” Hanes said, “are intended to extend the maximum assistance to the various communi ties of the State which are eager to encourage industrial develop ment and to obtain the greatest possible cooperation from individ uals and organizations for the State program.” In addition to Gov. Umstead’s scheduled address at the Zebu lon meeting, there will be talks by Director Douglas, members of the Commerce and Industry com mittee, a leading industrialist whose firm has recently chosen North Carolina for a plant site, and experts in various lines of en deavor related to development. Other members of the Com merce and Industry committee are: Leo Harvey, Kinston, vice, chair man, Charles S. Allen, Durham, Carl Buchan, Jr., North Wilkes boro, Amos Kearns, High Point. Henry Rankin, Fayetteville, and T. Max Watson, Forest City. TOWN BOARD HAS MEETING Orders Given To Stop Speeding The members of the Zebulon Board of Commissioners took note of the speeding within the city limits of the town at the August meeting of the group held Monday night. “Crack down on speeding,” the Commissioners instructed the town police during the business session. The ordinances for the Town of Zebulon set the speed limit on through highways at 35 miles per hour. In the residential sections the limit is set at 25 miles per hour. A limit of 20 miles per hour is set by the ordinances for the busi ness district, and 15 miles per hour is the limit at intersections and around corners. Parking Presents Problems In addition to speeding, the com missioners noted that parking vio lations add to the traffic problems of the town, and they set about correcting the situation. Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. Millard Clark of near Lizard Lick, enlisted at the drill last Monday night and was assigned to duty with the firing sections. Enlistments in the National Guard are being accepted by Bat tery A. Qualified men between the ages of 17 and 18% years can see WO Johnsey Arnold at the armory Monday through Friday of each week. C., Friday, August 7, 1953 Final Plans Completed for Gala Celebration Staged for Rural Fire Truck Wednesday Legion Auxiliary Plans to Serve Barbecue to Visitors The American Legion and Aux iliary have placed tickets for the barbecue supper which they will serve on Farmers’ Day in various stores throughout the community. It was their thought that many of the people who live a good distance from town, would prefer having a good meal at the scene of the many activities planned. The meal will consist of half a chicken, slaw, bread, drink and dessert, and the price per plate will be $1.25. Tickets Available It will be necessary to know how many plates to prepare, so if you have not gotten your ticket, they may be obtained at the following jlaces until Monday. The Atlantic, Esso, and Texoca sta tions were named by the board as offenders. Traffic Circle Approved A traffic circle for the intersec tion of Arendell and Vance Street was suggested by Frank Wall in a motion seconded by Wilbur Deb nam to improve the congestion at that spot. The motion was carried • Finer Carolina Show To Be Here Aug . 77 The Finer Carolina Radio Show, originally scheduled to appear in the Wakelon auditorium on Tues day, August 18, has been resched uled for Monday night, August 17, according to Ralph Talton, mana ger of the Zebulon office of Caro lina Power and Light Company. The change was made to avoid con flict with the industrial meeting to be held Tuesday night with Governor William Umstead pres ent. i Local personalities will be in terviewed on the show, including Ed Hales, chairman of the Finer Carolina Steering Committee. The show will begin at 8 o’clock in the evening. Admission is free and no ticket is required to see the one-hour show of songs and jokes. On the following Sunday, 30 minutes will be broadcast over 23 radio sta tions in Eastern North Carolina and South Carolina. “You can see the show produc ed, and then hear it again over the radio on the following Sunday af ternoon,” Talton said. Last Dance The last dance of this summer will be held tonight from 8-11 p. m. at Wakelon High School Gym nasium. Everyone is cordially in vited to attend. SCOTT AND MANNING TO SPEAK; TELEVISION SET TO BE GIVEN; BALL GAME, DANC£ ARE FEATURES Plans for the gala Fire Truck and Farmer’s Day were complete yesterday, and a feature-packed prbbrag is in readings for the large crowd expected to be at Wakelon School next Wednesday to help celebrate the purchase of the truck for the Zebulon Rural Fire Depart ment, Inc. Speakers, prizes, mu sic, and special events will fill the exciting day. Activities Begin at 2 A 2 o’clock the activities for the day begin with a farm equip ment display and irrigation demon stration, presention, presented by ten dealers. Taking part in this part of the program are Finch Tractor and Im plement Company, Whitley and Scarboro, Problem Acres Farm Supply Company, Raleigh Trac tor and Truck Company, Wendell Tractor and Implement Company, Dillon Supply Company, Raleigh unanimously by the five members of the board. Included in the motion was an or j der to have parking zones painted on the streets so that drivers will have no trouble knowing where cars are to be parked. All park ing on Arendell Avenue will be parallel with the right side of the car to the curb. M. L. Hagwood, chairman of the Park Landscaping Project entered in the Finer Carolina contest, re quested that the ditch which drains the park to the southeast be deep ened. Action was postponed until property owners with land ad joining the ditch can be contacted. The new Dodge dump truck will arrive within ten days, the com missioners were informed, and the dump body for the truck is ready to be installed. « Present at the meeting were Commissioners R. Vance Brown, Wesley Liles, Howard Beck, Frank Wall, and Wilbur Debnam; Mayor Worth Hinton; and Town Attorney Foster Finch. Boys' State Delegates Give Report At Legion Meeting Held This Week Attending Boys’ State, sponsored annually by the North Carolina Department of the American Le gion, is one of the nicest things that can happen to a person, mem bers of the Zebulon American Le gion Post were told Wednesday night by the two Wakelon dele gates to the 1953 session. Wayne Perry and Richard Bul lock, rising seniors at Wakelon, brought a report of the week’s activities to the local post, which sponsored the two students. A heated political campaign occurred this year when a third party, the Confederates, was form ed by members of Boys’ State. To combat the splinter group the two established parties, the National ists and the Federalists, combined forces to sweep the major offices. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers. Farm Equipment Company, and others. At 4 o’clock prize chairman Frank Kemp will conduct the awarding of prizes to the farm families present. First prize will be a brand new Zenith televis ion set, retailing for $350, obtained from Parrish Electric Company of Zebulon. Prizes of cash and merchandise amounted to nearly S7OO will be given by merchants in the com munities to be served by the rural fire truck. Registration for the prizes will begin at 1 o’clock, Kemp said. Kerr Scott to Speak Following the prize awards, former Governor W. Kerr Scott will make the featured address of the day. The Haw River dairy far mer was chosen speaker for the day by special speaker committee who felt his appearance would in sure a large attendance for the oc casion. A demonstration of fire fight ing will be given by members of the Zebulon Volunteer Fire De partment, headed by Ed iKtchings. At 5:30 a chicken barbecue sup per will be served by the Zebulon American Legion Auxiliary so that visitors will not have to return home home between the afternoon and evening programs. A carge of $1.25 a plate is being made for the supper, which will include barbecue, slaw, bread, a drink, and pie. Any profits realized from the supper will be used to purchase books for the Zebulon Community Library. At 7 o’clock the famed 94th Ar (Continued on Page 5) Wakefield to Meet Raleigh Team Here The Wakefield Softball Team will meet Bird’s Drive in of Ral eigh on the Wakelon diamond at 8 o’clock Saturday night. Either Fer nie Richards or Ralph Collins will start on the mound for Wakefield. The Drive In nine is a fast-mov ing outfit, standing second in league standings in Raleigh. No ad mission is charged for the contest. Noted speakers from the state government, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the State Bu reau of Investigation, reported to the Boys’ State members, telling of the mechanics of government. During the business session a report was made by Wade Perry, service officer of the post, on the work done by his committee. The post voted to assist the Le gion Auxiliary in every way pos sible in serving a barbecue sup per in the Wakelon cafteteria on Farmer’s Day. The Legionnaires accepted an invitation extended by the Auxil iary to hold a joint meeting with them in September when the new Legion Auxiliary officers will be installed. Commander Johnsey Arnold presided at the meeting.
