The action was taken following a talk by Ralph Talton at the Thursday night meeting of the Lions in which the speaker told about the building and the value it will be to the community. H. C. Wade, chairman of the Community Building project en tered in the Finer Carolina con test, was present at the meeting to assist in answering questions about the building. Information Campaign The visit by the two project workers was part of a campaign to acquaint all civic groups in the community with the building and solicit support for the coming campaign for funds. W. Amos Abrams of Raleigh, Ed itor of the North Carolina Educa tion Association magazine, spoke during the meeting on “The Philo sophy of Children,” telling how in many instances children prove themselves more intellectual than adults. Gilmer Parrish, proprietor of Parrish Electric Company, was in troduced to the club as a new member. Raleigh Lions Visit Among the visitors were repre sentatives from the Raleigh Lions Club, and E. C. Sanderford of Cary. The Zebulon Lions Club will join Lions from all over Wake County in giving a picnic for the children of the State School for Rev. S. E. Mercer To Be Home Soon Rev. S. E. Mercer, pastor of the Zebulon Methodist Church, is feel ing better at Rex Hospital where he went for a check-up on account of a respiratory infection which aggravated his arthritis. His tem perature is normal and he prob ably will be home during the week. There will be no services next Sunday at the Methodist Church. the Blind in Raleigh on Thursday of this week. Thomas Smith of the Zebulon Club is in charge of the committee charged with providing entertain ment for the picnic, and the Wakettes, popular girls’ quartet, will sing. Missing Windows Don't* Stop Armory The Zebulon National Guard armory is growing bigger all the time, as the walls around the main assembly room go higher and high er each day. In spite of the bad weather of two weeks ago, the work is ahead of schedule, accord ing to Frank Christopher, superin tendent on the job. No Windows or Doors Yet Windows and door frames still have not arrived at the site, and Christopher said he had decided to expect them when he sees them. He is not letting the absence of the windows slow the construction, however. Debnam, president of the Community Chest, called the meet ing at the request of the Board of Directors of the Chest, who recom FIRE TRUCK STILL MISSING Whar Kin It Be? The big question this week is whether the Zebulon Rural Fire Department is going to receive its truck as promised or whether Car olina Sales Equipment Corporation in Charlotte will plead for more time to complete the truck. The original delivery date ver bally promised by a representative of Carolina Sales Equipment Cor poration was in time for the big Farmers’ Day held August 12. The day was a success even though the truck failed to arrive. 60-Day Delivery Promised The contract, signed by repre sentatives of the Zebulon Rural Fire Department, called for a guaranteed delivery within 60 days of the time the truck chassis was delivered to the Charlotte firm. It People Came from All Around Folks came from all around to welcome Hudson-Belk’s new store to Wendell last Thursday. The street in front of the building was nearly blocked just prior to the 9 a. m. opening, and hundreds and hundreds of customers poured through the doors as soon as Wen dell’s Mayor W. A. White, cut the ribbon officially opening the new business. Unofficial estimates placed the Privette, Mr. J. K. Then we like to thank Mr. Smith for furnishing us a water cooler and the ice for the drinks, Mr. Dan Perry and Gardner Temples for parking cars, mended the idea of a United Fund for discussion by the community. Ralph Talton reviewed the his tory of various charitable drives in Zebulon and briefed those pres ent on the need of a united appeal. Pat Farmer was quoted as hav ing told the speaker: “Giving to one drive at a time, I do not know how much to give.” This was the view of those present. Insures Fair Share The United Fund insures each agency participating getting its fair share of the gifts and con serves manpower and time in the single campaign. will have been 60 days by the end of this week since Raleigh Tractor and Truck Company made delivery of the International truck. Truok Just Ain’t Here Actually, the directors of the Rural Fire Department were told, the initial delay in delivery of the chassis was to prove no prob lem in making delivery of the completed truck. Whether it did or not thj directors have not been able to tell they only know the truck isn’t here. The Record placed a call to the Charlotte firm yesterday to ask for information on the delivery of the truck. No one in the office could give any information, and the only person who could answer was “down the street.” number of visitors in the store at over 5,000. The store officials had planned for more than 2,00, but even their best laid plans failed to include all who came to the sale. The 13,000 square feet of floor space in the building was packed with merchandise. Jack IJerndon, manager of the Wendell branch, expressed his appreciation for the welcome given the business by East Wake County and the communities adjoining. Mr. Bowling, Mr. L. A. Baker, Mr. M. G. AGAIN I SAY THANKS CITI ZENS FOR A JOB WELL DONE. WORTH HINTON, Mayor of The Town of Friendly People Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers. Harold Bronfil, field secretary for the Carolina United Red Fea ther Service stated that his or ganization does not condemn na tional agencies, but seeks to keep a few of them with great emotional appeal from oversubscribing while other equally worthy causes have insufficient funds. “Here is the opportunity to have a machinery in the community to do the work (of apportioning denations) for you on a fair basis,” he summa rized. Necessary Steps Board members outlined the necessary organizational steps as follows: (1) Invite interested agencies to join United Fund. (2.) Present to the member agencies a tentative budget and negotiate amounts which seem unfair. (3.) Conduct the single drive with full cooperation of all groups and with publicity of an educational nature which would prevent member agencies’ “losing their identity.” (4.) Allow no other solicitations in the community by taking any steps deemed advisable under the individual circumstances. Chairman Debnam stressed the fact that schools and churches are not included in the United Fund and will continue to conduct drives on a purely local basis for their projects. Motion by Massey The motion made by Dr. L. M. Massey to adopt the United Fund for Zel?ulon was carried unani mously. Further discussion took place on the advisability of joining the Wake County United Fund. It was pointed out by Gilbert Beck, Har old Bronfil and others that the local United Fund would still be permitted independent action in any instance where there was dis agreement with the Wake County United Fund; and by combining with the Wake County drive, a great deal of work would be elimi nated which falls on an independ ent group. Prepare for Campaign Following the meeting, Chair man Debnam announced that the Zebulon community would ope rate its United Fund independent ly of the Wake County group this year and that further investiga tion and discussion would be con ducted before further action is taken. The President and Directors are planning now for the intensive fund raising campaign to be con ducted this fall. A budget giving the amounts st aside for partici the amounts set aside for partici before the fund drive.
