The vis itors checked the appearance and knowledge of the men and ob served the classroom instruction during the two-hour drill. Making the inspection were Lt. Col. The featured at traction is a technicoler produc tion, “Seminole,” starring Rock Hudson and Barbara Hale. 17 CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF GROWTH Over $1,000,000 in Deposits Zebulon’s branch of Peoples Bank and Trust Company is ready to give the best service possible to the patrons of the institution, ac cording to Cashier R. Vance Brown. Over $12,000 in improvements to the building were completed re cently, making it one of the most modern in the state, and the bank expects 1953 to be the 18th con secutive year it has experienced an increas in business. The bank is located on the cor ner of Vance and Arendell Ave nues where it has been ever since it was established in Zebulon in 1935 to fill a real need for banking service for this community. No Dance Tonight For Local Teenagers There will be no dance in the Wakelon gymnasium tonight, ac cording to Gail Privette and Dick Bullock. The square dance, which was announced in Tuesday’s Zebu lon Record, was cancelled yester day because of remodeling work which is being done in the gymna sium. Collin McKinne, operations and training officer; Capt. Melvin Holmes, commander of headquar- , ters battery; and WO Willard Mor- ' ton, battalion personnel officer. While in Zebulon, the visitors ; inspected the progress of the new j armory construction, commenting j that the Zebulon building will lx- j the best of any in the battalion when it is completed. Other units j of the 113th Battalion are located at Louisburg, Youngsville, Rox boro, and Dunn. Lt. George Hinds, assistant exe cutive officer of Battery A, will return this week from Ft. Sill, Ok lahoma, where he has been study ing at the Artillery School through the summer months. Lt. Hinds is assistant principal of Myrtle Un derwood School in Raleigh. No drills will be held by the Zebulon battery for the next two weeks. The next assembly of the Guard unit is scheduled Monday night, September 14. The head office of Peoples Bank and Trust Company is in Rocky Mount. Other branches are locat ed at Nashville, Whitakers, Mid dlesex, and Battleboro. Deposits in the local branch ex ceed a million dollars. This year the total deposits are $1,350,000. The peak was reached in 1951, when the total reached $1,875,000. Working with Mr.* Brown in the Zebulon branch are W. Horace Gay, assistant cashier, and Mrs. Dorothy Debnam and Miss Sarah Eaton. The bank is completely air-con ditioned. A huge battery of fluor escent fixtures provide superior il lumination for the beautifully dec orated interior, which is painted in shades of green. The partitions are made from wormy chestnut, presenting an un usual and beautiful arrangement. 23,609 Deposits Illustrating the amount of busi ness done last year by the Zebu lon branch, Mr. Brown said that in 1952 23,609 individual deposits were made for a total of $11,812,- i 000. C., Friday, August 28, 1953 Postcard Ballot to Decide Whether Single Campaign Will Replace Multitude of Drives American Red Cross Reports Show 100,000 Homeless, 1000 Dead Harold Pitzer, Chairman of the Wake County Chapter, American Red Cross, received word from E. Roland Harriman, National President, that because communi cations have been broken the full extent of the toll in lives and property damage in Greece is not known. However latest confirmed reports indicate that 1,000 have been killed, thousands injured, and more than 100,000 homeless. The Greek ambassador has re quested the American Red Cross to assume responsibility in the United States for collecting relief funds for Greek Red Cross. Because of lack of warehousing facilities, | collection of clothing and other items of material assistance is not i contemplated. Believing that the American people may desire to express their sympathy for disaster ; victims by contributing to the re lief fund, Red Cross chapters, in cluding the Wake County Chapter, will receive such contributions for transfer to the Greek organization. \ONLY ELEVEN DEFENDANTS Recorder's Court Has Long Session Wednesday proved a long, hard. day for Judge Irby D. Gill and So licitor Foster D. Finch in the Zeb ulon Recorder’s Court. It was sup per time when the session was ad journed even though only eleven defendants were tried during the day. However one single episode caused most of the long session. Not Guilty Verdict A verdict of not guilty was ren dered in cases charging Mrs. Pat sy Lee Thorne and John Robert Barham, both of Route 4, of liv ing as husband and wife even they were not married to each other. 114,000 checks for over sl2 million, j The local bank cashed 78,000; out-of town checks for $6,931,000. There were 1,312 notes paid during the year for a total of $528,000, and 2,292 reductions in notes were made for $280,000. 1,880 New Loans There were 1,888 new loans made for $873,000; and 565 loans were renewed totalling $632,000. Peoples Bank and Trust Com pany offers complete banking ser vice, including checking and sav ings account, a trust department, safe deposit boxes, loans of all types, and mortgage loans. Graphic Proof of Fire Truck Use Will the ’•jral fire truck do much good at the outer limits of the seven-mile radius it will serve? That question has been posed by many farmers when they were asked to join the Zebulon Rural Fire Department, Inc., and Willie B. Hopkins and Earl Duke provid ed a good answer Wednesday morning when they answered a SCHOOL NOTICE Parents of beginning students who did not at tend the pre-school clinic are requested to bring the students to the Principal’s office on Monday, August <3l, for registration. All other children who are entering Wake 1o n School from some other school are also requested to come to the office on Mon doy for registration. i i __ _ . . Legion, Auxiliary Plan Joint Meeting The Zebulon American Legion Post will join the Legion Auxiliary for a chicken barbecue at E. P. Privette’s next Wednesday night, Commander Johnsey Arnold said yesterday. The occasion will be highlighted by the installation ceremonies for incoming officers of the Auxiliary. Franklin Roosevelt Thorne, of Route 2, Wilson, husband of Mrs. Patsy Thorne, was found guilty of two charges. He was fined the costs for assaulting his wife with his hand or fists. For aiding in taking his child, Patricia Thorne, under six months of age, away from the little girls mother to be placed in a foster home or institution without the consent of the mother, Thorne was fined the costs. An appeal was taken in both cases and bond was set at SSO. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Andrews of Wilson both were charged with assaulting Mrs. Thorne with hands and fists and were fined the costs. Hurley Montague, Route 2, Wen dell, guilty of having a concealed weapon, a pistol, in his possession, was sentenced to 90 days suspend ed on payment of $75 fine and costs. Speeding; Is Expensive | On another charge of speeding 75 miles per hour, Montague was sentenced to 90 days, suspended ! on condition he pay a fine of SSO and costs and surrender his dri j ver’s license to the court clerk. Zonnie Lee of Zebulon, guilty of driving without a license, was sen tenced to 60 days suspended on payment of $25 fine and costs. Joseph R. Winston, Route 1, Wendell, guilty of speeding, was sentenced to 90 days suspended on payment of S4O fine and costs. Thomas Pete Miles, Route 3, (Continued on Page 2) call for help from D. Davis Sons, Publishers. ★ New Vote Follows Unanimous Action At Public Meeting A unanimous vote doesn’t nec essarily represent the sentiment of the majority, especially when on ly 17 people make up the unani mous voters, the Board of Direc tors of the Zebulon Community Chest decided this week; and so a postcard ballot is being conduct ad to determine whether the 630 members of the Zebulon Commun ity Chest want to replace the mul titude of drives presently con ducted for charitable causes with a single campaign held once each year. The postcards, which explain the purpose of the ballot, are being mailfd today, and are to be re turned to President J. C. Deb nam of the Community Chest by Monday evening. Sequal to Assembly The new action by the Directors is a sequel to the special assem bly in the municipal building last Friday night, where the 17 persons present decided Zebulon should adopt the United Fund plan. The number present was disappointing ly small in spite of the advance publicity given the meeting. The postcard explains that “your Community Chest wishes to know if you would prefer one unified fund raising campaign each year for the various local and national charitable organizations such as polio, cancer, Red Cross, scout, rec reation commission, etc., or do you prefer to continue as we have been doing by conducting individual drives for each agency each year.” Opportunity to Vote On the reply card the Commun ity Chest members are given an opportunity to vote for or against (Continued on Page 7) Baptist Services Are Listed for Sunday The Rev. Bev. A. Asbury will speak on “Faith as Responsibility” at the morning worship services of the Zebulon Baptist Church /Sun day August 30. The sermon is the second of a series on “Faith” to be given on succeeding Sundays. The adult choir will sing the an them, “Incline Thine Ear,” by Him mel at the morning service. A baptismal service will be conducted during the evening ser vice. The members of the church and visitors are invited to attend. Little League Team Plays Here Tonight The crucial game of the season will take place tonight at 8 o’clock under the lights on the Wakelon diamond for Zebulon’s Little League baseball team, when the local nine meets Buckhorn for the championship play-off. Both teams now have two victories and tonight’s contest will decide the league champion. , Battery Listed Coach Willie Griswold said yes terday that Tony Pearce will pitch for Zebulon and Buddy Tippett will catch. i Everybody is urged to attend i and cheer the local Little Leaguers to victory.
