Typical of the troubles that plague growers of the golden weed is fire, which is shown destroying a barn owned by W. L. Simpson, who lives just south of Zebulon. This marks the second year in succession that Mr. Simpson has lost a barn to fire. Casey Stallings, member of the Zebulon Volunteer Fire Department, is pictured standing by. Important United Fund Meeting Planned for Town Hall Tonight Excellent response is being giv en to the postcard ballot conducted by the Zebulon Community Chest this week, according to J. C. Deb nam, president of the group. The deadline for mailing the postcards was yesterday at noon, but it will be sometime this morning before the results are known. The vote was running about 20- to-1 in favor of a single campaign for funds for charitable purposes yesterday, Mr. Debnam said. Approval Assured Judging from the returns yes terday, community approval for the United Fund idea is assured, 1 Mr. Debnam said, and a special meeting is being called for tonight at 8 o’clock in the Municipal Build ing to plan the next steps. C., Tues., September 1, 1953 Bunn Schools Open Monday, August 31; Rolesville, Wakelon to Open Thursday * Franklin County Units Now Open Bunn District Schools opened for the fall term on Monday, Aug ust 31, with registration and orien tation taking places yesterday, Mr. W. H. Kelly, supervising principal, announced. The Bunn District Board of Education set the time of the school day during the month of September from 8 to 12:30 in order that the children will be able to help a portion of the day with tobacco barning. The faculty for the year at the schools in the Bunn district was announced by Mr. Kelly and in cludes the following: Pearce School: Miss Beatrice Dean, principal; Mrs. Doris Smith, and Mrs. Lillian P. Rolesville Opening By Gilbert Davis The Rolesville School will open Thursday, September 3, 1953, at 9:00 a. m. for the ’53-’54 term, when some 650 children will trek back to classrooms to resume their studies. The public is invited to attend tha opening exercises at 10:00 a. m. in the H. S. auditorium. There have been many renova tions jobs underway during the summer months. With some reaching completion this week, such as painting, alteration of Science Dept., additional equip ment being added in the Commer cial Dept., along with other depart ments of the school. Constructed at a cost of over a hundred thousand dollars, the unit will be in use for the first time this fall. PRINCIPAL *# . ■— . > W. R. Whittenton W. R. Whittenton, principal of Wakelon School, is looking forward to a fine school year at Wakelon during 1953-54. Students Offered School Insurance Accident insurance for school children, covei j them from the time they leave home in the morn ing until ttiey return from school in the afternoon, will be offered again this year. The insurance pays doctors, dentists, nurses and hos pital bills resulting from injuries , caused solely by accident and sus tained while attending school, traveling to and from school, par ticipating in school-sponsored ac tivities, and participating as a member of a team in any athletic activity with the exception of foot ball. Benefits Provided Benefits are provided for chil dren in case of loss of hands, feet, eyes, or life. The insurance will cost parents $1.25 per year. Parents of children who play football will be expected to provide their own insurance coverage for these children, according to Wake lon Principal W. R. Whittenton. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Local PTA Plans For Busy Year By Ruth Chamblee The Wakelon PTA will start the 1L53-1954 season on September 21st with a reception for the facul ty. The reception will be held in the cafeteria of the new build ing and will initiate a program of closer cooperation between the teachers and parents. The basic objects of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers include the promotion of child welfare in the community and the develop ment between educators and the general public of such united ef forts as will secure for every child tnc highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual edu cation. This coming year all those working for and with the Wakelon PTA hope to stress these princi ples and to make advances which will benefit all our students and their parents. The slate of officers elected and installed are: Mrs. Frederick Chamblee, President; Mr. Wilbur Debnam, Vice-President; Mrs. Eu gene Privette, Secretary; and Mrs. | Thurman Hepler, Treasurer.
