A major change has been made
in the State brush burning law, |
which became effective October 1
and will remain in effect until next
June 1, according to W. R. Broad
well, Wake County Forester.
The law, which was rewritten
by the 1953 State General Assem
bly, makes it unlawful for any
person, firm or corporation to start
or cause to be started any fire or
ignite any materia] in any of the
woodlands under protection of the
State Forest Service, or within 500

charge and may be easily obtained,

Town Hall, Wendell, Massey's
Store, Zebulon, and W. I. Hop
kins, Hopkins.
No permits are necsesary for
brush or debris burning if such
burnings are started between 4 p.
m. and ending at midnight when
winds are usually not so high and
brush fires are less likely to be
spread by gusts wind.
During periods of hazardous
forest fires, Forester Broadwell
pointed out ,the States forester is
authorized under the new brush
burning law to cancel all permits
and prohibit the starting of any
fires in any of the woodlands un
der protection of the State Depart-

Conviction for violating the
brush burning law is punishable
by a fine up to SSO, or impris
onment for not more than 30 days,
the Forester said.
The county Forester pointed out
that the new brush burning law
does not apply to any fires started
or caused to be started within 100
feet of an occupied dwelling house.
This merely means no permit is
required when such fires are
started or caused to be started
within 100 feet of a dwelling house.
Because of the unusually dry
Summer and early Fall, forests in
the county, the Forester said, are
rather dry and much care should
be exercised by any person hand
ling fire in or near any wooded
area.
Campers, hunters, fishermen,
motorists, and hikers are urged to
be sure to douse all campfires,
crush out all lighted cigarettes and
j cigars, and not throw lighted live
I ashes anywhere they might ignite
; dry woods.
