The baby in the nurse’s arms is warm, well-fed, healthy, and
loved because the people of North Carolina are aware of the con
structive program conducted by the Children’s Home Society. That
awareness has in Zebulon taken the form of addition of the Society
to the agencies participating in the United Fund campaign. Success
of the drive will, among other things, encourage growth of sound
adoption practices throughout the state.

Massey Resigns Wake Deputy's Position;
Sheriff Says No Successor Decision Made
Sheriff Says Choice
Os New Deputy Still
Waiting on Trip Here
Wake County Sheriff Robert
Pleasants yesterday denied re
ports that he has made up his
mind on who his new deputy sher
iff for this end of the county will
be. “I have not made up my mind,”
Sheriff Pleasants said, “and I will
; not decide until I can get down to
1 Zebulon and talk with the people
there.”
Thus far three applications for
the position vacated by Guy C.
Massey are on file in the sheriff’s
office. Earl “Crip” Duke, Steve
Blackley, and Billy K. Hopkins
have asked for the job.
County Commissioner Carey
Robertson stated Tuesday that he
has been unable to come to Zebu
lon to determine the sentiment of
! the people here, but that he plans
to visit here today or tomorrow.
However, he has made his recom
, mendation to Sheriff Pleasants, al-
I though he did not say who his
. choice is.
Commissioner Robertson said
: that he thought all three of the
candidates are good men and that
he had talked with all of them.
Known endorsements in Zebulon
seemed to favor Candidate Earl
Duke, who is serving now as con

signed by Mayor Worth Hinton and
four of the town commissioners en
dorsing Duke for the position of
deputy sheriff, and other letters
j have been written by prominent

serving as constable until farming
activities required too much of

Billy Hopkins served on the po
lice force in the shipyard at Wil
mington during the war and also
as a special deputy at Wilming
i ton.
Letters supporting all three have
been reported sent to Sheriff

United Fund Success
Predicted by Talton
With $4,500 in sight for the Zeb
ulon United Fund by yesterday af
ternoon, Solicitations Chairman
Ralph Talton expressed his confi
dence that the community will
exceed the goal of $5,000 today.
Chairman Talton based his fig
ure of $4,500 on his expectations
that receipts from Wakelon School
and the colored community will
equal what was given last year.
This year’s Zebulon United Fund
goal is double what the Commun

the United Fund includes 13 sep

Resignation After 21
Years of Service Noted
In Letter Exchange
Announcement of the resigna
tion of Deputy Sheriff G. C. Mas
sey came this week from Sheriff
Robert Pleasants in the release of
letters between the local deputy
and the Wake County official.
The letter of resignation and the
acceptance letter follow:
Massey’s Letter
Dear Sheriff Pleasants,
1 respectfully request that my
services as a Deputy Sheriff of
Wake County be terminated as of
31 October, 1953, and that I be
placed on the inactive retired sta
tus. I most sincerely regret that
it has become necessary for me to
be retired. However because of my
physical disability and upon my
doctor’s advice I honestly believe
that it is best for me to retire from
active participation in Law En
forcement.
After twenty-one years of ser
vice as a Wake County Deputy
this has been the hardest task I
have had to perform. During my
period of service as a Deputy
Sheriff, the people of my commun
ity and County have been good to
me. For my part I honestly and
sincerely endeavored to perform
my duties in an efficient and cour
teous manner. I hope that in some
way I have been of value to my
friends, community, and county.
Enjoyed Work
During my years of service as
a Deputy Sheriff I have worked
for both you and Sheriff Turner.
I have greatly appreciated this
opportunity to work for both of
you. You each have been r.iy
friends and remain my friends,
and I remain as your friend. You
have both been kind and conside
rate of me and helped me in every
way possible. For this I thank each
of you. I personally know, having
been associated with each of you,
that each of you have endeavored
to serve as Sheriff of Wake Coun
ty in a fair, impartial, and efficient
manner, and I can truthfully say
I think that the Wake County
Sheriff’s Department has done in
the past and at present a real fine
job for the people of Wake County.
