Sergeant First Class Graham Pearce (right) of Clopton, Ala., is
congratulated in Korea by Lt. Col. R. H. Kuckaz, 74th Ordnance Bat
talion commander, after receiving the Commendation Ribbon for meri
torious service. Pearce, whose wife, Marjorie, and son live on Route
1, was cited for his work as an ordnance liaison representative from
last April 19 to December 15. Also a holder of the Combat Infantry
man Badge and the Purple Heart, Pearce served in Europe during
World War 11. In civilian life he worked for the State Capitol Life
Insurance Co., Raleigh.
Early H. Moser Resigns Position
With Wendell Commerce Group
After six years as Executive
Secretary of the Wendell Chamber
of Commerce, Early H. Moser sub
mitted his resignation in Decem
ber because of impaired health.
His resignation ended over half
a decade of work promoting the j
business and industrial growth of
Wendell, with special emphasis
on the tobacco market.
Past president of the Wendell
Chamber of Commerce and past
board members were special guests
at a dinner in December honoring
Mr. Moser. Wallace W. White,
president of the Chamber of Com
merce, led the group in expressing
appreciation for the services given
by Mr. Moser.

Past Year Sees Healthy Growth
In Zebulon Area, Review Shows
The past year was an eventful
year for this community not
because of any one major accom
plishment, but because of a multi
tude of little things which go to
gether to make a healthy, progres
sive, friendly place to live. Month
by month, Zebulon’s history in
cluded the following happenings,
taken from the files of the Zebulon
Record for 1953.
January
Horace Smith became manager
of the Zebulon branch of Little
River Ice Company, replacing J.
C. Debnam, who joined Finch
Tractor & Implement Company.
Zebulon was announced as num
ber 5 on the list of communities to
receive National Guard armories.
The Rev. Carlton Mitchell gave
his “swan song” at the Rotary Club
prior to leaving for active duty
with the Navy as chaplain. Ed El
lington appealed for contributions
to the March of Dimes.
A special meeting was held by
teenagers and their parents to de
cide the future of the recreation
program for teenagers. Recreation
Commission Chairman Ralph Tal
ton was in charge.
The Community Library was
opened two days each week. Le

sponsored bonus for veterans.
Fred Smith asked for help in
supporting the School Bond issue.
M. J. Sexton reported 1952 post
office receipts amounted to $19,-
987.63, a gain of 15% over the

participated in a Rocky Mount
parade. Hilliard Greene was elect
ed president of the Chowan Col
lege Student Government Council.

Tax Listing Time
Is Coming Soon
January 1 ushers in a new year,
and also brings with it the un
pleasant duty of listing property
for taxes, but Mrs. Eldred Foun
tree, tax lister for Little River
Township reports she will make
the duty as easy as possible for
property owners during January.
Mrs. Rountree was appointed to
replace her husband as township
tax lister. She has arranged a full
schedule for the month, including
the following dates and places:

9, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 27, 28, 29 and
30.

To make the job more conven
ient to those working during the
day, Eldred Rountree will be at
various stores in Little River
Township at night to list taxes.

Cafeteria Menu Given
For Wakelon School
MONDAY: Browned beef with
gravy, creamed potatoes, lima
beans, pear salad, hot biscuits,
bread and milk.
TUESDAY: Frankfurters with
chili, boiled potatoes, slaw, fried
apricots, rolls and milk.
WEDNESDAY: Chicken pot
pie, green peas and carrots, tossed
salad, bread and milk.
THURSDAY: Meat loaf with
gravy, mashed potatoes, slaw,
fresh apples, bread and milk.
FRIDAY: Vegetable soup with
beef, toasted cheese sandwich, ice
cream, bread, crackers and milk.

February
Sfc. Johnsey Arnold was named
unit administrator for Zebulon’s
National Guard unit. Rural fire
truck demonstrations were held
at Emit, Pilot, Lizard Lick, and
Hopkins Cross Roads. Mrs. Barrie
Davis was elected president of the
Junior Woman’s Club.
The pre-school clinic was an
nounced for March 6, with Mrs.
Fred Page hostess. Richard Bul
lock played the lead role in the
Wakelon Junior Class Play. A
topographic survey was made of
the National Guard armory site.
Chairman Ed Hales announced
all Finer Carolina projects were
moving right along. Plans were
underway for incorporating the
Zebulon Community Chest, and
an SBOO goal was announced for
the Red Cross drive.

Guardsmen Pack,
Prepare to Move
If you’ve ever had to move, you
know what the Zebulon National
Guard unit has in store beginning
Monday night, January 4, when the
Guardsmen begin preparations for
the big move into the new SIOO,OOO
armory. Hundreds of thousands of
dollars worth of clothing and
equipment must be packed during
the next two weeks, according to
Unit Administrator Johnsey Arn
old.
The drill on Monday night will
be the first for Battery A since
early December. The Guardsmen
had a long vacation, saving the
drills usually scheduled for De
cember until they are in their new
quarters.
Inspection January 13
According to Capt. R. E. Shelden,
engineering officer for the Adju
tant General’s Department, final
inspection on the armory will be
conducted January 13 by the
Army, and the local unit will be
given control at that time.
Battery A has a total of 60 of
ficers and men at present. Inter
ested men 17 to 18 V 2 years of
age are invited to visit during drill
periods or talk with WO Johnsey
Arnold at the armory Monday
through Friday of each week.

Dr. George Tucker, Enfield
physician, has moved to Zeb
ulon where he will practice
medicine from the offices in
the Privett Building formerly
occupied by Dr. Charles E.
Flowers, Sr.
Dr. Tucker, who is married,
will reside in the bungalow
on Sycamore Street formerly
occupied by the Crafton Hud
sons. The new doctor interned
at Rex Hospital, Raleigh.
Cub Leaders Are Named
For New Zebulon Pack
R. G. Privette, local plumber and
eleciiician, was elected unani
mously as cubmaster of the new
Zebulon Cub Park No. 340 at a
meeting of parents and Scout com
mitteemen at the Zebulon Baptist
Church last Monday night.
Named to assist Privette was H.
V. Andrews, Jr., superintendent of
the Methodist Sunday School, as
assistant cubmaster; J. R. Saw
yer, chairman of the Cub Scout
committee; and Noel Fowler, Ralph
Bunn, and Eston Corbett commit
teemen.
Mrs. H. V. Andrews and Mrs. Ed
Ellington were elected den mothers
at the meeting.
Commander, presented the Ameri
can Spirit Honor Medal to A-B
Kenneth D. Lloyd, Jr. from the
3655th BMTS. The Medal was
awarded to A-B Lloyd during the
Basic Trainee Parade. The Ameri
can Spirit Honor Medal is awarded
to enlisted or inducted personnel
or Air Force, who, while under
basic training, demonstrate, “Out
standing qualities of leadership
best expressing the American Spir
it-Honor, Initiative, Loyalty, and
High Example to Comrades in
Arms.” A-B Lloyd is the son of
Mrs. Margaret Lloyd of 501 De
vereux St., Raleigh, N. C. and the
late Mr. Lloyd. He attended Wake
lon High School in Zebulon and
N. C. State College, Raleigh, N. C.
before entering the Air Force Oct.
12, 1953.
For three years A. B. Llofd was
a member of the Zebulon National
Guard battery, attaining the rat
ing of Corporal and serving as
chief of the battery survey section-
