Corbett were the couple who enjoyed most the surprise anniversary dinner given them Sunday, February 21, at their home on Zebulon, Route 1. The nine children include Mrs. Worley Creech, Mrs. Crama Creech, Mrs. Walter Boyett, Mrs. Onnie Edwards, Mrs. Will Hinton, Mrs. Kemp Vann; J. M., Esker, and Zeb Corbett. They also have 30 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Woodmen Present Flag To Brownies Wednesday In an impressive ceremony Wed nesday night Woodmen of the World, Little Rivet 1 Camp 1065 presented an American Flag to the Brownie Scout Troop. The presen tation was made by Consul Com mander Joseph Price. He told of the heritage of the flag. It was accepted by Brownie Leader, Mrs. James Creech. Following the presentation the eighteen Brownies present pre-! sented a skit showing various ac tivities carried on by their troop. This included cookie making, cor sage making, lending a helping hand to the sick, and visiting the sick. Following the skits Taps was played by Martha Watkins. Ferd Davis pronounced the Ben ediction. Following the program ice cream and cookies were served by Mrs. Creech and Mrs. Woodrow Wat kins, Brownie leaders. Woodmen present were Joseph — -jr- WAKELON SCHOOL MENU MONDAY: Smoked sausage, turnip greens,, dried peas, onion rings, caramel cake, bread and milk. TUESDAY: Barbecue pork in bunns, slaw, boiled potatoes, or ange juice with cookies and milk. WEDNESDAY: Frankfurters with chili, slaw, butter beans, dried apricots, rolls and milk. THURSDAY: Sliced luncheon meat, string beans, bominy, pea nut butter in cups, chocolate pud ding, bread and milk. FRIDAY: Vegetable soup with beef, chopped ham, sandwich, car rot strips, ice cream, bread, crack ers and milk. Price, Wilson Braswell, Melvin La nier, Ferd Davis, Claud Dunn, and Wilton Price. Every Brownie was present ex cept one who was out of town. They were Margaret Ann Dunn, Ann Davis, Jean Glover, Sue Gai ney, Kay Pippin, Gloria Mason, Ju dy Temple, Patsy Braswell, Phyllis Parrish, Charlotte Scarboro, Sere na Baker, Joan Baker, Georgia Hinton, Martha Watkins, Diana Chamblee, Debbie Phillips, Jan Lowicki, and Marilyn Martin. Presbyterians to Hold Services in Wendell The Presbyterians of Zebulon aud Wendell will meet together in the Woman’s Club at Wendell on Sunday morning, February 28, at 11:00 o’clock, for worship, with a view to establishing a Presbyterian Church in this area. Rev. Harold Dudley, D. D., General Secretary for the Synod of North Carolina, will be present and preach the ser mon. Miss Mildred Mallard, Extension Worker for the Synod of North Carolina, has been visiting in both Zebulon and Wendell and has met with enthusiastic response. Presby terians expressed their gratitude to the leaders of the established churches of these cities for the cordial cooperation they have re ceived in this new venture. Other visitors expected to attend this first service are Mrs. David C. Worth of Raleigh, President of the Women of the Presbytery of Gran ville; Mrs. E. L. Barber, the or ganization’s Secretary; and Rev. E. L. Barber, the Executive Secretary of the Presbytery of Granville. Zebulon, N. C., Friday, February 26, 1954 February Project Progress Report Shows Work Started in Finer Carolina Contest The best start in the history of the Finer Carolina work in Zeb ulon is being made on the 1954 projects, according to reports sub mitted to Chairman Bev. As bury at a meeting of the Steering Committee hejd Monday night. Action work has begun on three projects, and preliminary plans have been completed on two oth ers. The 1954 projects are the most ambitious to be attempted by the Zebulon community. According to the reports sub mitted to the Steering Committee Chairman, the following has been done: Factory Building Actual construction has begun on the factory building. The foun dation is laid, the walls are go ing up, and the floor has been started. Vick Construction Com pany, contractors, hope to have the building completed in May. Work applications will be avail able one month prior to the com pletion of the building, according to Southern Industries representa tives. Garden School Is Planned Monday At Rocky Mount Next Monday, Tuesday and Wed nesday, course three of the State Garden School will be held in Rocky Mount. It will be taught by Mrs. J. M. Tyler, who spoke to our club in January. It is hoped that many of our members will be' able to attend at least part of the! course. If you are interested in going, please contact Mrs. Ferd I Davis. On March 9 the Wake Forest Garden Club will sponsor a Garden j Clinic on putting on a complete flower show. Mrs. Roy Home wood, past state president of the North Carolina Garden Club, will be in charge. Noted flower arrang ers and lecturers from Greens boro and Durham will give demon strations. Reservations must be in by March 4, so if you desire to go, please contact Mrs. Ferd Davis. Today club members will sell the dogwood trees which have been planted at the Theo. Davis home. All persons desiring a tree may buy them there from 9-12 a.m. and 1-5 p.m 4 The price will be what ever you care to pay, and the pro ceeds will go for the beautification of the armory. New Beauty Parlor New evidence of the growth and progressiveness of our town is the new beauty shop which is being opened by Mrs. Rudolph Manning next to Morgan Drugs. The shop will be opened as soon as the new equipment arrives, which will be within the next week or two. PUBLIC NOTICE The Wakelon Pre-School Clinic will be held Tuesday, March 16, at 12:30 p. m., in the Wakelon School Auditorium. If you child is eligible to attend school next year, please let him be present at this date. In addition to the factory build ing, a brochure is being planned telling of the Zebulon community and illustrating its schools, churches, and other points of in terest. Serving on the committee to plan the brochure are C. V. Whit ley, chairman; Ed Hales, Mrs. Ralph Bunn, Ferd Davis, and Mrs. | Doris Privette. Armory Site Beautification Six inches of top soil have been moved on the armory site, covering the red clay soil, following the re moval of debris left by the contrac tors during construction of the armory. Additional grading was required to provide adequate drainage and provide a drive cir cling the building. The Carmen Flowers Garden Club, sponsor of this project, served a supper at the armory ded ication to raise money for the pur chase of seed i.ad fertilizer for the three-fourths acre of lawn to be planted. Brown has arriv ed in Japan for a tour of duty in the Orient with the Army. He re cently completed his basic train ing at Camp Rucker, Ala. He is with Company 1, 164th Infantry Regiment, 47th “Viking” Division. Mrs. Brown is the former Miss Ercelle Tant of Rolesville. He is the father of an infant son. Pfc. Brown is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Brown. World-Wide Service of Prayer To Be Observed Friday, March 5 People of Zebulon will join peo ple of 118 countries around the world on Friday, March 5, in a World-Wide Service of Prayer. World Day of Prayer will be ob served on this day by people of every denomination, creed, nation ality and color. The people of the Zebulon Bap tist Church will join the people of the Zebulon Methodist Church on Friday, March 5, from 1 :30 to 11:00 a. m. at the Methodist Church for this service. Every person in Zebulon is in vited to attend as our community becomes one of 19,000 American communities participating in the world-wide observance. Theo. Community Building A special committee has been formed to study the possibility of having the architect re-draw plans for the community building so that it can be built in units. The ini tial unit, which would be at tempted this year, would consist of a large meeting hall, kitchen, and limited storage facilities. Other additions, to be completed in years to come, would include room for the library, club rooms for certain organizations, and other facilities needed. Negro Community Center A mass meeting will be held on Monday, March 1, at 7:30 in Shep ard School auditorium to transact important business concerning the purchase of a building to be used for a community Center for Ne groes, according to Harold Taylor, chairman of the project. A committee formed of Mrs. Lona Richardson, Mrs. Ada Denny, Savannah Vick, G. L. Crews, J. T. Locke, and Harold Taylor is head ing the work, and will present the Community Center plan to those attending the meeting next Mon day night. A site for the Community Cen ter has been located and is avail able for purchase, according to Chairman Taylor. Business Clean-Up Although no direct action has been taken by Chairman Irby D. Gill’s committee on business clean up and renovation of town appear ance, plans have been made call ing for a clean-up of lots and build ing in four sections of town. Each section will have its own chair man. A motion picture showing *he Zebulon community as a tourist would see it will be made and shown to civic clubs. The date for this project will be announced lat er. Photographs showing progress made in opening new streets and allies will be taken by the com mittee. Other plans call for the erec tion of signs proclaiming Zebulon a bird sanctuary; and signs inviting tourists to use the community park when passing through Zebu lon. The purpose of the day is to unite all Christians in a bond of prayer and to make an offering for Chris tian Missions at home and abroad. The theme for this year’s ser vice is “That They May Have Light." The program used the world over comes from a different country each year. This year it was written oy the late president of Isabella Thoburn College in Luck Now, India, Miss Sarah Chakko, shortly before her death in Janu ary. All business establishments in the community are urged to close their doors during this half hour in order to give each person an opportunity to attend this service.
