The appearance in Wendell will be part of the 38-voice dell High School auditorium, according to Roger W. Cole, director of choir’s annual spring tour. Traveling Choir To Be at Wendell; The Wake Forest College Choir will appear Thursday night, March 11, at 8 o’clock in the Wendell High School as part of its annual spring tour. The hour-long program will be under the direction of Prof. Thane McDonald, head of the College Music Department. The choir, which has been staging a spring tour since 1948, is made up of 38 students selected from the Glee Club. The program will vary widely. It includes a Russian liturgy, a sacred composition sung in Latin, Negro spirituals, semi-sacred com positions, Southern folk hymns and a choral benediction written by Director McDonald. One of the most popular num bers in “Jacob’s Ladder.” The choir presented “Jacob’s Ladder” twice during the Baptist State Convention this fall and received considerable praise. There is one boy from Wendell in the choir. He is William Pearce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Pearce. They won out in the finals, 55-47 over Red Oak, the defending champions. They also won a quarter finals game with Spring Hope 51-28, and a semi-finals game with Bailey 70-68. WENDELL TRAVELING CHOIR TO SING IN WENDELL MUNICIPAL ACTIVITIES Parking and Paving Improvement in the traffic sit uation in Zebulon was noted dur ing the past few days following work by the Zebulon police to eliminate double-parking on Aren dell Avenue. The added efforts to enforce Zebulon traffic laws met with majority approval in the community after the first days Chief of Polise Willie B. Hop kins expressed his appreciation to merchants and motorists who are cooperating in eliminating the double parking. Transfer and wholesale delivery trucks have been urged to use the rear entrances to stores where pos sible, and where delivery is neces sary in front of stores, to use available parking spaces .rather than block the street. • The State Highway Department has been asked to pave 16,637 square yards of streets in Zebu lon by the Board of Commission ers. The paving will include por tions of eight streets located in all sections of town. Work done by the Highway De partment forces will be paid for with money alloted the Town of Zebulon, N. C., Tuesday, March 9, 1954 I Zebulon by the Powell Bill. | The streets include Church Street from Vance to Sycamore and from Glenn to Judd, a total of 2440 feet; Judd Street from Church to Arendell, 600 feet; Lee from Church to Arendell, 600 feet; Pop lar from Vance to Highway 264, 1,060 feet; Whitley from Vance to Highway 264, 1,395 feet; Vance from Whitley from Poplar, 500 feet; Gill from Highway 264 to Stronach, 775 feet; and Mclver from Church to Aren dell, 600 feet. National 4-H Club Week Observed The 4-H flag will be flying at the Zebulon Postoffice this week in observance of National 4-H Week. The special week is being observed in Zebulon with special events, and was proclaimed Sat urday by Mayor Worth Hinton. On Friday the local 4-H club is giving a program in the Wakelon auditorium for the high school as sembly. The program will be titled “The 4-H Calendar.” A show window at Zebulon Drug Company features an exhibit pre pared by club members. Members of the club have ex pressed their appreciation to the people of the community for the cooperation given in preparing for and celebrating National 4-H Club Week here. PTA to Sponsor Card Tournament On Friday night, March 12, the PTA will sponsor a card tourna ment in the School Cafeteria. Bridge, rook, and canasta will be played. The event will start at eight o’clock. Price of admission is 50c per person. Refreshments will be served and a prize will be given for high score at each table. Special Zoning Meeting Called A special meeting has been called by Mayor Worth Hinton for Monday night, March 15, to decide on rezoning property on Gannon Avenue from residential to business. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p. m. in the municipal building and all interested persons are urged to attend. The property, a 50x100 foot lot located 185 feet from the corner of Gannon and Arendell Avenues, lies between the lots occupied by the Texaco Service Station and the W. R. Whittenton home, which is owned by Mrs. Charles Weath ersby. Zoning Vote Split It is reported that the Zoning Commission approved the rezoning by a split vote, 3-2, and that suffi cient opposition to the rezoning has been demonstrated to cause the Board of Commissioners to order a special meeting before acting on the Zoning Board’s recommenda tion. Battery A Reaches Quota; Ten Men Are Added during February Battery A, Zebulon’s National Buard unit, reported it had reach ed the goal set by the Adjutant General’s Department for the Feb ruary recruiting drive. The local unit added nine men and one of ficer to its roll during the cam paign, according to Unit Adminis ter Johnsey P. Arnold. The new men increased the strength of Battery A to nine of ficers and 72 men, the greatest since it was organized in 1949. Lt. Max Ira Loyd, a graduate of the Ft. Sill, Okla., artillery school who recently was released from active duty with a 280-mm atomic artillery battery, has joined Battery A as a forward observer. He is assisting in training the gun sections. New recruits enlisted in Febru- Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Zebulon American Legion Post Is Praised for Work The Zebulon Post No. 33 of the American Legion has exceed ed its membership quota for 1954 according to information receiv ed here from State Headquarters of the American Legion in Raleigh. Johnsey P. Arnold, Commander of the Post, has received a letter from the Legion Adjutant, Nash McKee, expressing thanks to the membership chairman, all Post Of ficers, and membership workers for their effort. W. L. McMillan of Rocky Mount, Department Commander of The American Legion, issued a state ment of high praise for the local Post. McMillan said, “I am proud to congratulate the officers and mem bers of Post No. 33 upon this not able achievement. All of the pro grams and services of the Legion are made possible through dues paid for membership and we ap preciate the great part played by Post No. 33 of Zebulon. Sincere thanks to every member of the Post who had a part in the mem bership work.” The quota of Post No. 33 is 75 and the membership for 1954 to date is 76. Quotas are assigned each Post by the State Headquarters and are based on the average membership of the Post for the past four years. ‘‘We do not intend to stop our membership drive now that we have reached our quota,” Post Commander Arnold said. “There are many more eligible veterans who have not yet joined our Post and we invite them all to become members.” Keep' Em at Home! Parents of Wakelon School pupils are urged to keep chil dren away from school when they are ill from mumps, measles, or chicken pox, or any other communicable di seases by Principal W. R. Whittenton. Request Signs Be Left Off Poles Here The managers of the Wakelon and Wendell Theatres have been requested to cease posting show signs on telephone and electric poles on Zebulon by the Board of Commissioners. During the past the signs have been tacked to poles in both the business and res idential dictricts.
