THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume XXVIII. Number 48. Wendell Dealer Spends 33 Years in Aufo Work The 33 years that O. K. Hender son of Wendell has been associat ed with the automobile industry span years of tremendous progress in motor cars, in the community, and in his own business. It was in 1921 that Mr. Henderson began business in a small service station on a mud street in Wendell There was not too much traf fic on Highway 64 in 1921- The Town of Wendell had only 35 au tomobiles compared with 450 today. But O. K. Henderson in his new Automobile Service Station had begun to grow- The first tank car of gasoline for the new station had to be pumped by hand from the railroad to the service station- It took all night long for the task to be com pleted. Along with gas and oil, the Au tomobile Service Station was deal er for the famous Oakland car. In 1928 the Pontiac line was added, and the business name was chang- j ed to Wendell Motor Company, as it is today. Three new cars were sold by the company in 1929 compared with 92 cars and 56 trucks in 1953. This does not in clude used vehicles. The Wendell Motor Company sold Chevrolets in 1930, but the depression year of 1932 saw the WOMAN'S CLUB MEETS F.H.A . Gives Program The March program on Ameri ca of which Mrs. C. V. Whitley was chairman was presented by Miss Mary Palmer’s F. H. A. class of the Wakelon School. Katie Joyce Eddins, president, presided. Ruth Temple gave Hhe devotional. Sara Tippett told the meaning of the creed. Mona Faye Horton and Mener Moody gave short talks on F. H. A. work as they under stood it. Keith Temple showed a picture “How to give a Party,” which was very good information to the F. H. A. class. A memorial gift was mnde by the club in honor of three former club members who are now de ceased and whose memory the Zebulon Woman’s Club honored by sending a gift of money to the Federation Headquarters in Ral eigh to be used to purchase a book for the reference library. Henderson change to Fords, and a period of expansion was begun. Today Wendell Motor Company, still headed by Mr. Henderson, oc cupies over 30,000 square feet of floor space, with a complete gar age, body shop, and lubrication service. In i. 921 the service sta tion was crowded into only 300 square feet of space. From a single employee in 1921, the staff of the business has in creased to 23 people today- A special gift plate bearing the names of the donor and the names of the deceased, Mrs. Theo. B. Da vis, Mrs. Charles- Flowers, and Mrs. G. C. Massey will be placed in the book available to all club women throughout the state of North Carolina. The new officers will be install ed at the May program. Mrs. C. V. Whitley and Mrs. J. F. Coltrane were hostesses serving Coca-Colas and cookies. Cotton Yield Low During '53 Season North Carolina farmers produc ed a", estimated 380 pounds of lint cotton per acre in 1953, some 86 pounds, or 24 per cent below the 1952 cotton yield and 19 per cent below the 10-year average. Lester V. Chalmers, Jr., candi date for solicitor of the 7th solici torial district, which embraces Wake and Franklin Counties, was in Zebulon and Pilot Friday after noon, “just meeting the folks.” Chalmers, opposed by Bob Cot ten of Fuquay Springs, Bruce Mc- Donald of Wake Forest, and J. C. B. Ehringhaus, Jr., and Carl Gad dy of Raleigh, is presently serving as assistant to William Bickett, who has been solicitor for twenty years and is not a candidate for re j election. The assistant solicitor is a grad j uate of the University of North Carolina academic and law schools, and attended high school in Ral eigh, where he was an outstanding football player. C., Tuesday, March 23, 1954 Thirteen Children Found Without Fault at Clinic Some interesting facts and fig ures were compiled at the Wake lon Pre-School Clinic held last week, attended by 66 children and 62 parents, according to Wakelon School Superintendent W. R. Whittenton. Os those present, 13 children were found without defects, the clinic revealed. Defective Teeth Defective temporary teeth were found in 39 children, and three children had defective teeth cor rected. Eighteen of the children had no dental defects. Throats in 46 of the children were found allright. Three were advised to have tonsils removed and five already had their tonsils removed. Two of the children were re ported to have had rheumatic fev er, and one had asthma. One was referred for further examination including his eyes, and one reported orthopedic con dition. New Beauty Shop To Open Wednesday The Zebulon Beauty Shop, man aged by Mrs. Ruby D. Manning, will hold an open house Wednes day from 5 p. m. to 9 p. m., with special prizes for those who attend. The new beauty shop, located next door to Morgan Drugs, brings to three the number serving this community. The prizes will be given at 9 p. m., according to Mrs. Manning. Everyone who visits the beauty shop during the hours of the open house can register, and winners are not required to be present, The value of the prizes range from $1.35 to $15.00. Miss Hazel Bunn is assistant manager of the Zebulon Beauty Shop. The telephone number is Zebulon 3096. Bridge Tournament To Be Held Thursday The Zebulon Woman's Club is sponsoring a bridge tournament on Thursday, March 25, at the club house. Play will begin at 3:30 for those who wish to play in the afternoon. Evening play will be gin at 8:00 o’clock. The fee per player will be 50c. Chairman of the tournament is Mrs. Irby Gill who is the Ways and Means chairman. A prize will be awarded the high scorer at each table. No reser vations are necessary. Tables will be provided. Come bring your cards and score pads. Sonny Coley Stars On WNAO-TV Show Sonny Coley was again .a suc cessful winner on “County Style,” WNAO’s TV show last Saturday night. Sonny was a first place winner, defeating The Melody Masters” who were first place win ners for the two previous Satur day night. He wishes to thank his many friends in Zebulon and surrounding towns for helping hiki to win by their phone calls and cards. HONORED m Hr ml w Ruth Brown Miss Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Vance Brown of Zeb ulon, has been honored by elec tion to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, national collegiate scholar ship group. Wakelon Alumna Phi Beta Kappa Miss Ruth Brown, a senior at Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, is one of twenty members of her class selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, WCUNC officials an nounced last week. The local girl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Vance Brown, was notified of her election to the hon or group in chapel exercises at the college last Tuesday. President Gordon Gray of the Greater Uni versity spoke at the exercises, pay ing tribute to Miss Brown and oth er members of her class who at tained PBK membership by scho lastic achievement. Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest college fraternity in the United States, having been founded at William and Mary College at Wil liamsburg on December 5, 1776. At first a secret group, it has be come a national organization with chapters at most major colleges. Miss, Brown, who graduated from Wakelon School in 1949, will receive her degree with a major in English on May 31. While a stu dent at Wakelon, she was an out standing basketball player as well as a fine academic student. Dr. C. Sylvester Green to Speak At Baptist S. S. Council Supper Dr. C. Sylvester Green will be featured speaker at the Sunday School Council supper Wednesday evening at the Zebulon Baptist Church, according to Dr. L. M. Masey, Sunday School superin tendent. The supper will begin at 6:30 in the church basement. Dr Green is executive Vice President of the Medical Founda tion of North Carolina, with offices at Chapel Hill The foundation provides supplementary funds for medical education, medical re search, and medical services to the people of the State through the University of North Caro lina- A native of Kentucky, Dr Green has lived in North Carolina most of his life. Davis Sons, Publishers "Martin Luther" Film Scheduled For Special Show The controversial motion pic ture, “Martin Luther," will be pre sented in a special showing in the Wakelon Theatre at Zebulon on Thursday morning, April 1, at 10 o’clock, according to James Wall, manager. Thd advance showing will be given for ministers in the communities surrounding the Wakelon Theatre. Mr. Wall extended a special in vitation to ministers of all denom inations to be present with their wives and two Hymen from each of their churches. “Martin Luther,” the full length dramatic film on the life of the man known as the “spirit ual father of Protestantism,” was planned and financed by Luther an Film Productions, Inc. White, Colored Invited No tickets will be required from the ministers, their wives, and selected laymen who attend the showing. Both colored and white ministers are asked to at tend. The film begins when Luther, to find forgiveness and peace, en ters the Augustinian monastery. It ends when the news reaches Luther that the evangelical princes has fearlessly stood by their evan gelical convictions in behalf of his beliefs, at the Diet of Augsburg. The Protestant Motion Picture Council selected Martin Luther as a picture showing ‘tremeindous achievement in portraying a char acter, a period of history, and the convictions which prompted their development.” Azaleas Available At Armory Today Mr. C. V. Brooks of Wallace will bring an assortment of azaleas in different sizes and varieties to Zebulon today. He will be at the Armory between 2:30 and 3:00 o’clock for the people to make the selection of the varieties and num bers they desire. * Many people in the community who haxe expressed interest in the plants at such a reasonable price have been contacted by phone, and it is hoped that .over a thousand of the beautiful plants may be planted in Zebulon.
