BAPTIST CHOIR TO PRESENT EASTER CANTATA HI 1 B m ££••...>. t<i? ♦ $\ .• |BpH l |i| l i .UW M l , ■ M 11 'i f| | i II'; BHraiH iflH : Ik ß p: The choir of the Zebulon Baptist Church will present “Adoremus Te” (We Adore Thee), an Easter Cantata by Joseph Clokey, on Easter Sunday evening at 8 o’clock in the church sanctuary. Clokey is a contemporary American composer who has written much sacred music that is interesting and appeal ing. The organist-conductor for the cantata will be Paul Robinson. Everyone in the community is cordially invited to come share in this experience of joy in the risen Christ. More Candidates Mean More Interest by Voters Candidates for local elective offices became more numerous this week, producing a corresponding increase in township politics. Irby D. Gill and A. R. House both filed as candidates for judge of the Zebulon Recorder’s Court on Monday, April 12, and James Richardson announced his candidacy for constable of Little River Township this week, bringing to four the number seeking the constable’s post. At present he is unopposed Wake County Juniors Participate In Career Guidance Day Programs Approximately 600 Juniors from the ten Wake County High Schools attended the second annual Occu pational Guidance Days. Juniors from Knightdale, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wakelon and Wendell at tended conferences at Rolesville, April 13 and Juniors from Apex, Cary, Fuquay Springs, Garner and Millbrook met at Fuquay Springs, April 14. Leaders in 39 professions and vocations held conferences with students interested In their re spective work as possible careers. In each group a student chair man and a counselor assisted the consultant. Coffee hour was held at the Home Economics' Buildings for the speakers. Mothers of the Juniors were hostesses. The program in each school be Richardson brought the an nounced candidates for constable to four, Eddie Martin, Troy Wat kins, and Raymond Perry having announced for the office earlier. Prospective candidates have through Saturday, April 17, to file. Both House and Gill have had experience as recorders, Judge Gill having seYved for several years in the Zebulon court. Mr. House served for several years as judge of the Apex recorders court, re signing that office to become judge of the local court. He resigned as Zebulon recorder to run for the state legislature, and later served as solicitor of the local court un til succeeded a year ago by Foster D. Finch. Bob Emanuel, young Raleigh attorney who has served as an as sistant in the attorney general’s office, is known to have been con sidering filing for the local re corder’s position, having been urg ed by some local people to file, but is believed to have decided not to engage in what is presently a strictly local race. Mr. House issued a statement (See POLITICS, Page 6) gan at 9:30 in the autditorium with the Rolesville Glee Club and Fu quay Springs Band and Glee Club presenting musical programs. Mr. Gilbert Davis, principal of the Rolesville High School, and Mr. E. N. Farnell, principal of Fuquay Springs School, welcomed the Jun iors and visitors. Mr. Randolph Benton, Supt. of Wake County Schools in vocation and Mr. Fred A. Smith, Asst. School Supt., introduced the speakers. Dr. J. Glenn Blackburn, Chap lain of Wake Forest College and pastor of the Baptist Church and Mr. Robert B. House, Chancellor of the University of North Caroli na, were guest speakers. House, his opponent, filed Monday. fSBk 111111 J||p Ik a A. R. House Challenger Mr. House, a Zebulon attorney, is a candidate for judge of the local recorders court. He has held this office previously, as well as hav ing served as solicitor of the same court. Talent Night Winners Announed at Theatre Talent night winners this week at Wakelon Theatre in Zebulon were Leonard Lewis and Ike Strickland in first place; Jean Hall of Route 3, Spring Hope, in sec ond; and the Little River Ram bler of Wake Forest in third. FOR JUDGE 6, 1954 Miss Zebulon Contest to Be Staged Next Friday Night In National Guard Armory Three Groups Join to Sponsor Contest, Dance tor First Time Here; Seven Lovely Girls Already Entered in Pageant The loveliest and most talented girls in the community will compete on Friday night, April 23, for the title of Miss Zebulon and the honor of representing the community in the Miss Wake County Pageant next month. The competition will begin at 8 o’clock in the evening in the National Guard armory here. The contest is sponsored jointly by the Zebulon Junior Woman’s Club, the Carmen Flowers Garden Club, and the local unit of the National Guard. Contestants will be graded on both talent and beauty, with judges scoring them on separate score sheets. The two contestants awarded the largest number of points will be entered in the Miss Wake County Pageant. The Miss Wake County Pageant is a stepping stone toward the Miss America Pageant held annually at Atlantic City. According to Mrs. Wilmer Ed dins, entrant chairman for the Jun- j ior Woman’s Club, seven contest ants already have agreed to enter j the local contest. These include Joanne Jones, Shirley Rogers, Joyce Hales, Tootie Oakley, Geraldine Phillips, Hazel (See COURT, Page 6) Methodists Plan Revival Services The Easter service at Zebulon Methodist Church at 8 p. m., next Sunday night will also serve as the beginning of the annual revival or preaching mission. Dr. C. D. Barclift, pastor of Trinity Metho- i dist Church in Durham, will be the speaker for these services and will bring his first message on Sunday night. The services will continue at 8 p. m. each night through Friday night. It is ex pected that these services will mark the outstanding week of the year in the work of the local Meth odist Church. A cordial invitation is extended to all who feel the need of hearing the gospel force fully and earnestly presented. Judge Gill Takes Notice of Board's Suggestion He Clear Court Docket An order was entered in every case outstanding in the Zebulon Recorders Court Wednesday, after Judge Irby D. Gill had taken offi cial notice of a resolution passed by the Zebulon Board of Commis sioners on April S, calling for speedier dispensation of justice in the local court. Judge Gill, apparently believing that the request was motivated by political considerations, made no statement from the bench concern ing motives, but ordered tliat every case on which the state was ready to proceed be tried at 9 o’clock yes terday morning. When not sitting in his capacity as judge and jury, however, the judge was considerably more out- Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers RESIGNS 111 : - m m W. R. Whittenton After four years as head of Wakelon School, Mr. Whittenton this week announced his resigna tion. He succeeded Fred Smith, now assistant superintendent of Wake County Schools. Easter Service Is Set for Tonight The annual union Good Friday service between the Baptist and Methodist Churches in Zebulon will be held on Friday night at 8 p. m., in the Methodist Church. Rev. Bev. A. Asbury will bring the message for this sacred obser vance and Rev. S. E. Mercer will lead the service.
