Beauty Pageant Scheduled at Armory Tonight THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume XXVIII. Number 57. Eight Talented Beauties Enter Zebulon Pageant; Ten-Piece Orchestra to Play for Queen's Dance Joyce Ann Hales Shirley Gene Oakley Last Rites Held For L C. Liles Luther Calvin Liles, 66, promi nent farmer and poultryman of Zebulon, Route 4, died unexpected ly Monday after a brief illness at his home. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Hephzibah with the pastor, the Rev. Joe F. Roach, in charge, as sisted by the Rev. Theo. B. Davis. The body was taken to the church an hour prior to the service, and burial was in the church cemetery. Masonic Rites Held He was a Mason and member of the Junior Order, and Masons were in charge of rite at the grave side. Mr. Liles was active all his life, and attended to his farming and poultry interests until the day of his death. He was a son of the late W. A. and Virginia Horton Liles of East Wake County. Long a civic and church leader, he served as Sunday School super intendent, deacon, -clerk, and lay leader at Hephzibah. He served several terms on the Wendell School District Board, was on the Farm Home Administration Com (See LILES RITES, Page 12) Mener Lee Moody Ella Susan Richards Biggest Variety Night Coming Saturday Night The biggest variety show ever staged in Zebulon, complete with the Country Style television show, will be staged in the Wakelon auditorium tomorrow night begin ning at 8 o’clock. The Zebulon Lions are sponsoring the perfor mance, with the proceeds to be used for the blind in Wake County and in the state. The Broad Ridge Quartet of Lumberton will be special guests for the show. Other stars which will be featured include Mrs. H. C. Wade’s dancers; the little Sirls twins, stars on television; The Wake-etts; the Rhythm Masters Quartet, and the Baker Quartet. Little Sonny Coley, talented per former who captured first place in the talent nights held at Wake Fred Strickland Final Talent Night Winner Fred Strickland of Route 3, Spring Hope, was first place win ner in the final Talent Night held at the Wakelon Theatre in Zebulon. He was, one of seven preliminary winners entered in the finals. Zebulon, N. C., Friday, April 23, 1954 Forest recently, will sing tomorrow night. His appearance is by popular demand. Other groups which will be here include the Pine Top Trio, Pa Perkins, the Sand Dance of Radio fame; and Jim Thornton and and Mozelle Phillips of the Country Style television show. The Lions promise that the show is sure to please everyone from junior to grandpa. Admission is 50 cents with no reserved seats. Lovely Ladies Range from Brunettes To Blondes: Will Sing, Dance, Recite Eight lovely and talented ladies are participating in the Beauty Pa geant Friday night in the Zebulon National Guard armory. The tal ent portion of the contest will be gin promptly at 8 o’clock. Petite Myra Joyce Baker, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Losey Baker, is a talented dress designer. She has chestnut brown hair and dark blue eyes. Her hobbies are ballroom dancing and movies. She will be Hazel Ross Ihrie Lila Rose Pace Melba Jean Baker Myra Joyce Baker Danish Student Is Rotary Speaker The vast differences between her native Denmark and the United States were discussed last Friday night before the Zebulon Rotary Club by Miss Ann Horne, student at Meredith College, Ral eigh. Miss Horne is studying in this country for a year, with her ex penses paid by the Raleigh Rot ary Club. She is one of four stu dents sponsored by the Rotary (See ROTARY, Page 12) sponsored by Parrish Electric Co. Blond - haired, blue - eyed, Lila Rose Pace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Pace, is a 1952 graduate of Wakelon, where she starred in basketball. Farmers Department Store will be her sponsor. Brunette Mener Lee Moody, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Moody, has brown eyes and en joys collecting novelties and sew ing as hobbies. She will be spon Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Expect Full House At Armory to See First Local Pageant A full house is expected for the Beauty Pageant tonight at 8 o’- closk in the Zebulon National Guard Armory. Eight talented beauties will participate in the contest, which is sponsored joint ly by the Zebulon Junior Woman’s ! Club, the Zebulon National Guard | unit, and the Carmen Flowers Gar ; den Club. A full evening is planned, be i ginning with the talent contest at 1 8 o’clock, followed by the beauty pageant, continuing with a short program and special entertain ment, and concluding with a dance ending at midnight. First Zebulon Pageant This marks the first Beauty Pag eant conducted here, and the two top contestants here will be en tered by the Junior Woman’s Club in the Miss Wake County Pageant at Fuquay Springs next month. Both pageants are stepping stones in the Miss America Page ant held annually at Atlantic City, N. J. Rules for the Miss America Pageant govern the local contest. Contestants are judged on tal ent, poise, charm, and beauty of face and figure. Wonderful prizes will be award ed the top winners, and a special award will be made the winner of the talent contest. Every con testant will be presented a gift by the sponsors. Capt. Barrie Davis, commander of the local National Guard unit, will serve as Master of Ceremonies, and members of Battery A will present special entertainment while the judges determine the winners from their score sheets. Mayor to Crown Queen Mayor Worth Hinton will offi cially crown Miss Zebulon, who will reign as Queen of the ball which follows. A 10-piece orchestra will pro vide music for the dance. Blue-eyed Joyce Ann Hales, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Danjfl Hales, graduated from Middlesex High School and took further training at Hardbargers. She en joys reading, sports, and movies.
