Ed assured us that Europe has improved greatly since he toured the continent as a member of Uncle Sam’s wartime military forces. Zebulon Lions Capture Bulk Os State Convention Awards The Zebulon Lions Club came home from the State Convention held in Raleigh Sunday through Tuesday of this week and brought back pretty near every cup and I trophy awarded. The Convention was climaxed by a banquet held I Tuesday evening at which all the Lions and Lionesses of the Zebulon ; Club were present, ninety-three strong. | Special Program Seven children from the Metho dist Orphanage in Raleigh will assist Superintendent R. D. Hed den in presenting a special pro gram at the Zebulon Methodist Church on Sunday at 11 a. m., ac cording to the Rev. S. E. Mercer, pastor. Following the service there will be an old fashioned picnic dinner for all who attend. Dedication of Flag Pole Scheduled By Woodmen at Armory Sunday Formal dedication of the 40- foot-high flag pole and the Amer ican flag presented to the Zebu lon National Guard unit by the Little River Camp of the Wood men of the World will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:30, accord ing to Consul Commander J. P. Price of the Woodman Camp. E. H. Moser, former principal of Wakelon School, will make the dedication address. He will be in troduced by Major Ferd Davis, a ~iember of the WOW Camp. The presentation of the flag The trophies presented the club included the District Governor’s Point Contest Trophy for attend ance, increase in membership, and attendance at special meetings; the Best Club Activities Trophy; the 100% Year’s Attendance Trophy; and the Best Convention Attend ance Trophy. Secretary Bill Marley was pre sented the District Secretary’s Award, nd Zone Chairman Wil bur Debnam received a special cup. When Clifton Marsh won a 21- inch television set given Tuesday night, one of the District Govern or’s present offered the Zebulon Lions the furniture, “since you’ve gotten everything else we have.” Another highlight of the conven tion was the entertainment pro vided by the Zebulon club. The Wakettes trio, Hazel Ihrie, Norma Pearce, and Doris Fowler, and little Sonny Coley sang at the con (See LIONS, Page 7) pole is part of the national pro gram to promote patriotism con ducted by the Woodmen of the World. Already the Boy, Girl, and Cub Scouts in Zebulon have been presented flags. Following the presentation, the flag will be raised as the Star Spangled Banner is played over the public address system. The Guardsmen will be in formation for the program. The public is invited to the pre sentation ceremony. A short open house will be held afterward for inspection of the armory. Zebulon, N C., Friday, June 18, 1954 Henderson Principal Is Named To Head Wakelon Next Year Board Chairman Says Community Is Very Fortunate “We feel fortunate in having Mr. Jones come to Zebulon,” stated Ed Hales, chairman of the Wakelon School Board yesterday as he in troduced the n w Wakelon prin cipal around the community. The announcement of the school board’s action in naming Franklin Ross Jones to be Wakelon principal cli maxed an intensive search by the board members for a successor to W. R. Whittenton. During the period since Mr. Whittenton submitted his resigna tion to the school board, over a dozen names were considered by the board, and considerable time was spent in investigating and weighing the qualifications of each person considered. Chairman Hales said that peo ple in Henderson gave highest rec ommendation to Mr. Jones, who has participated in every phase of community activity during his five years as principal of the Hender son Junior High .School. Members of the Wakelon school board reported that, in addition to a school administrator and teacher, they looked for someone who would fit into the community life here. Local Candidates Predict Light Vote Interest in the Second Primary to be conducted by Democrats on Saturday, June 26, is lacking, both ; candidates for Constable of Little River Township reported this j week. It’s impossible to stir up muck enthusiasm and a light vote can be expected, they said. Incumbent Eddie Martin reports that he is getting better support from the home folks up around the north end of Little River Township this time, but still the vote at Mitchell’s Mill will not be any thing like it was on May 29. In Zebulon, candidate James Richardson says that he is out campaigning just as hard as before the first primary, but he is find ing some people who are sur prised to hear of another chance to vote Saturday week. Unless the two men seeking the office of Solicitor of the Seventh ; District stir things up during the •next week, Little River Township won’t cast much more than 500 votes come J une 26, both candi dates agree. Religious Service Planned by Guard Sunday will bring a full day of heavy work for members of the Zebulon National Guard unit as the battery continue preparations for summer encampment August 15 through 29. Every section will engage in specialized dur -1 ing the eight-hours of training. The drill will begii at 8:45 with a worship service conducted by the Rev. Bev. A. Asbury, pastor of the Zebulon Baptist Church. The public is invited to the service. Individual instruction will be given the 75 Guardsmen during the morning, and the entire bat tery will participate in a combin ed exercise in the afternoon, con ducting a simulated combat firing mission. Jones Is Active in Ail Community Work Franklin Ross Jones, principal of the Henderson Junior High School for the past six years, will be principal of Wakelon School next year, it was announced yes terday by Ed Hales, chairman of the Wakelon School Board. Mr. Jones succeeds W. R. Whittenton, who submitted his resignation ear lier this spring. The new Wakelon principal has been teaching eleven years. He was principal and coach at Saluda, S. C., head coach at Monroe, and athletic director at West Notting , ham Academy, Maryland, before going to Henderson. Mr. Jones was born in Asheville, ! attended the Asheville city schools for ten years, then received his diploma from the Hampden Du- Bose Academy in Orlando, Flori da. He received his A. B. degree at Lenoir Rhyne College and his M> A- fxom thq University of North Carolina. At the present time, he has completed most of the class work for a Ph.D. degree at ’ the University. i As an undergraduate at Lenoir ! Rhyne, he was active in all col ; legiate work, including football, : literary, debating, music, religion, and international relations. While at Henderson, he has been a hard worker in church and com munity life. For two years he has been Superintendent of the Adult Department of the First Baptist (See PRINCIPAL, Page 7) Address Change Wake County Selective Service Local Board No. 93 is now located in Room 813 Odd Fellows Build ing, Raleigh, N. C. It was formal ly located in Room 1012 in the same building. James A. Weeks, a native of Clinton, N. C., has joined Carolina Power & Light Company as a mem ber of its legal staff. Attorney Weeks attended high school in Clinton, after which he attended Wake Forest College. He received his BS degree from Wake Forest in 1949 and the T.I-.B degree jin 1951. He is a member of the | North Carolina Bar Association and of Phi Delta Phi, international legal fraternity. During World War 11, Weeks served in the U. S. Army Air Corps, principally in New Guinea. He was discharged a staff serge ant. Prior to joining the CP&L Le gal Department, Weeks was claim representative of the Aetna Cas ualty & Surety Company in Ral eigh.
