At a Nurserymen’s Short
Course at State College there
was much discussion about the use
sawdust and peat for mulching
drubs and for incorporating with
the soil as a source of organic mat
ter. Most of the discussion pertain
ed to the care of azaleas and camel
lias, which are very popular at the
present time.
It was pointed out that sawdust
and peat are not desirable as
mulches because they may become
packed and hard and water will
not penetrate them when in this
condition. Pine straw or partial
ly rotted hardwood leaves make
a satisfactory mulch. On the oth
er hand, sawdust preferably
old sawdust and peat are good
materials to incorporate with the
soil as a source of organic matter.
Both will make the soil reac
tion somewhat more acid which is
for azaleas and camellias.
it must be kept in mind
that in the rotting of the peat or
sawdust the bacteria use up nitro
gen from the soil and a yellowing
of the leaves and poor growth
may result. So if you are using
large quantities of peat or sawdust
you may have to add nitrogen to
the soil in order to counterbalance
the denitrifying action of the bac
teria.
It should be understood that a
chlorotic condition or yellowing of
the leaves of azaleas does not nec
essarily mean that more nitrogen is
needed, or that the soil is not acid
enough. It is a sign that some
thing Is wrong. Have a soil test

not be planted deeper than they
were in their previous location.
Sometimes a yellowing of the
leaves denotes iron deficiency,
Thi condition may be remedied by
spraying the plants with a dilute
solution of iron (ferrous) sulphate.
