Admission is 25c for children, 50c for adults. Billy Joe Bailey Cited for Heroism, Recommended for Medal Award SENDAI, Japan (Ist Cav.) Two Ist Cavalry Div. MP’s rescued two Japanese children from a burning house here last week. Sgt. Billy J. Bailey and Cpl. James Bailey, unrelated, were helping evacuate belongings from burning buildings when they heard cries from two children trapped in one of the houses. The two four-year-olds, a boy and a girl named Yoshizi Shibuyo and Yoko Ohara, apparently had fled from a top floor, but were blocked by a locked door. The MPs broke down the door and carried the youngsters to safe ty through flames and smoke minutes before the building col lapsed. The incident came to light when witnesses reported it to Capt. Eugene T. Carson, commander of the 545th MP Co. Carson said he has recommend ed the Baileys for the Soldier’s Medal, the highest military award for bravery in peacetime. Wakelon Boys Defeat Millbrook; Cagers Meet Wendell Here Friday The Wakelon boys, continuing their winning ways, defeated Mill brook here Tuesday night 64-45. Coaches Ingram and Jones had the team to the point where the final margin could have been much wider had not liberal substitution weakened the Bulldogs effective ness. High scorer for the Wake lon boys was Douglas Perry with 28 points, his high for the season. Outstanding play making was seen in the efforts of Tony Pearce who repeatedly broke up Mill brook passes and played a stellar floor game for the home team. He scored 13 points for the evening. Phil Brown had 12 and Luther Long, 8. Fathers of the children thanked the two troopers. Sgt. Billy Joe Bailey is the son of Mrs. W. T. Woodruff of Norfolk, Va. and the late Sullie Bailey. He is the grandson of Mrs. Patrick Joyner and Mrs. Charlie Parrish of Zebulon. Legion Meeting The Zebulon Post of the American Legion will hold its February meeting next Wednesday evening at 7 o’clock at Hilliard’s Drive In, Adjutant Guilford Bus kin ahnounced yesterday. H. A. Hodge, paroles commission worker, will speak to the Legionnaires on the work done by his supervisory group. Com mander James Alford will preside at the session. The Bulldogs are looking for ward to Friday night when the Wendell team makes its visit to play the second conference game. Wendell was the winner of the other game at Wendell. In a non conference game early in the sea son the Bulldogs lost to Wendell 50-47. The girls’ team lost a heart breaker 46-46 to the Millbrook six after being ahead nine points at halftime. Peggy Richardson led the scoring for Wakelon with 20 points followed by Jenny Watkins who had 14. A janitor will be on hand Fri day night to insure sufficient heat and comfort in the gym. Zebulon, N. C., Friday, January 28, 1954 Finer Carolina Entry Is Voted; Thurman Murray Is Chairman Wake Schools Set Saturday Session As part of the Wake County plan to make up part of the time lost due to the recent deep snows that caused school to terminate for three days, schools in the district 4 will be in session this Saturday. District Principal Franklin Ross Jones stated that Wakelon Schools, the Shepard and Riley Hill Schools will be open this Saturday. Schools will not be in session the following Saturday, February 5. It will be decided later what dis position will be made regarding making up the other lost days. Good Attendance Asked Principal Jones encourages par ents to have their children in school. If high school students need to be out for justifiable reasons they are asked to contact their principal and obtain excuses. Lunches will be served in all schools. Dismissal time on Saturday will be 2:15 p. m. Schools in the sur rounding counties are generally planning school for this coming Saturday. Rotary Articles Planned On International Affairs The international service com mittee of the Zebulon Rotary Club, in cooperation with the Record, will sponsor a series of articles de signed to acquaint the public with the background of the current near-conflict in Asia as well as troubled areas elsewhere in the world. Eddins Is Chairman Sidney Eddins, chairman of the international service committee, has arranged for the publication of selected background articles over the next two months. Brief but cogent, the series will seek to in form the public on conditions in such arsas as Formosa, Korea, and Central America. Reprints of the articles will be given Rotarians and school chil dren, as well as Record readers who request the reprints, Chair man Eddins stated. Honor Court Is Held By Local Boy Scouts Members of Boy Scout Troop 340 held a Court of Honor in the Baraca Room of the Zebulon Bap tist Church Monday night, with six boys advancing in rank and one receiving four merit badges. Scoutmaster James Debnam con ducted the honor session, at which Johnnie Richardson presided. H. A. Hodge and Ferd Davis, mem bers of the Scout Committee of the Baptist church, made short talks. In addition to the Scouts who advanced in grade, two Scouts, Randy Long and Robert Pulley, were presented Tenderfoot badges by Scoutmaster Debnam. The Scout meeting next Monday night will be held at the local Scout hut next to the freezer lock er plant. Interested boys are in vited to attend the meeting. Massey Names Leaders For Loral Polio Drive By Dr. L. M. Massey Mr. Willie B. Hopkins, Mrs. Charlie D. Hawkins, and Rev. Beverly A. Asbury will have have charge of the Zebulon March of Dimes, Mr. Hopkins will con tact the business people of the town in the effort to give everyone an opportunity to contribute to the Polio Drive in Zebulon. Mrs. Charles Hawkins and Rev. Bever ly A. Asbury will have charge of the “Mothers March” on Monday night, January 31. (Continued on Page 8) Building (or Sale The Board of Trustees of the Zebulon Community Center will offer for sale at public auction the school building it recently pur purchased from Wake County on the Shepard School grounds here, R. P. Richardson, board chair man, said yesterday. The frame building will be sold at 2p. m. next Thursday, February 3. In spection of the property may be arranged by con tacting Harold Taylor, Richardson said. Wake County PTA Study Course To Be Taught Here on Thursday A Parent-Teacher study course, sponsored by the Wake County PTA organization, will be held at Wakelon School Thursday, Febru ary 3, Mrs. J. R. Sawyer, Wakelon PTA president, announced yester day. Registration for the study course will begin at 4:00 p. m., Mrs. Saw yet said, and the lectures will start at 4:30 and last until 6:00. Supper at SI.OO a plate will be served from 6:00 to 7:00 in the school cafeteria. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Decision Made Tuesday Night Thurman Murray, partner in Wakelon Food Market and a mem ber of the Wakelon School Board, will serve as chairman of the Zeb ulon Finer Carolina Committee in 1955. Mr. Murray was nominated and elected at a meeting of the 1954 committee and other civic leaders following a dinner at the Woman’s Club here Tuesday night. Wilbur T. Debnam, a former Finer Carolina Committee chair man, presided at the meeting in the absence of the Rev. B. A. As bury who served as chairman last year. Project chairmen in 1954 were Judge Irby D. Gill, C. V. Whitley, Harold Taylor, H. C. Wade, and Mrs. Ferd Davis. Development of community centers for white and colored, town beautification and cleanup, and industrial progress formed the basis for the five pro jects last year. Carolina Power & Light Com pany, sponsor of the Finer Caro lina Contest in North and South Carolina, was host at the supper. Ralph Talton, manager of CP&L’s Zebulon district office, welcomed the guests, and spoke on cultural and economic growth of towns par ticipating in the Finer Carolina ef fort in recent years. In response to Mr. Talton’s query as to whether the com munity wished to participate in the contest in 1955, the group voted unanimously to take part, follow ing a motion by Ed Hales, sec onded by Thurman Murray. Present at the meeting were Mrs. Doris Privette, Mrs. Ferd Davis, Ralph Talton, Wilbur Deb nam, Sidney Eddins, Rodney Mc- Nabb, Aaron Lowery, Howard Beck, Frank Wall, Tom Monk, Bill Marley, Vance Brown, Jack Potter, S. P. Scott, L. M. Massey, Willie B. Hopkins, Robert Ed Horton, Ed Hales and Thurman Murray. MORE SNOW! The third heavy snowfall within a ten-day period began last night about 6:45, and by 8 o’clock the fields, yards, and roofs were cov ered to a depth of an inch. A hard freeze was predicted for early this morning, with more precipitation indicated. The total snowfall for January has neared a record for Zebulon. Following a concert by the Wakelon band at 7 o’clock, the course will be resumed at 7:30 and last until 9 o’clock. Prominent speakers will participate in the study session. Complete plans for the study course will be announced in Tues day’s Record, Mrs. Sawyer con tinued. She requested that all Zeb ulon people planning to attend the dinner contact her as soon as possible.
