THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume XXIX. Number 55. Mayor Hinton Announces His Candidacy for Another Term* Cites His Years of Public Service; Says Only 16 of 200 Lions Pledged to Him for Governor Mayor Worth Hinton, stating that he has scant hope of being elected a district governor of Lions International and citing his record of service to the town, announced his candidacy for reelection yes terday morning. In his statement Mayor Hinton also was critical of members of the local Lions Club who reported that the organization was planning to use some or all of the proceeds from the recent “Country Style” show at Wakelon School to further his candidacy for district governor of the Lions. Earlier Mr. Hinton had filed for reelection, taking the step im ■pl > tL •• ijiipi iiiiiii^^7- Worth Hinton ... decides to run ... mediately after Gilmer Parrish fil ed for the Board of Commission ers last Saturday afternoon. This year marks the third time that Mayor Hinton has run for Mayor of Zebulon. In 1951 he was opposed by R. H. Bridgers and Norman Screws and in 1953 by Ferd Davis. The text of Mr. Hinton’s state ment follows: “After having so many of my friends to ask me to again run for Mayor of Zebulon, the office I now hold, I am taking this oppor tunity to announce my candidacy for reelection. First though, per mit me to thank each of you for your favors and fine support in the past. Also, I thank you for your co-operation in helping me to pro mote Zebulon. “Better Than Ever” “I am forty-three years old, and have served our town and you citizens for ten aears, six as a com missioner and four years as your Mayor. Truly I can say that the experience gained by me has been valuable, and on account of that experience, I am better prepared to serve you now than ever before. During my service to the Town, which has been an honor to me, I want you to know that I have given freely of my time in the per formance of my duties as Mayor. When called upon to do so, I have represented Zebulon at all out of town meetings, as well as the reg ular and called meetings of our official board here. “This I would like to say fur ther. My first and also my deep est interests are my family, my church and my town. I have lived here and operated the same busi ness for twenty-one years. It is true that I am a member of sev eral civic and fraternal organiza tions, but here too, I am always boosting and pulling for Zebulon. My earnest desire is to see our town go forward, and I believe you will agree with me that it has gone forward in these last four years. I plan to send to each of you, a letter giving you a complete report of this progress. “Now about the newspaper re port of my being a candidate for District Governor of Lions Inter national. At this time, I can re port to you, that we are certain of only sixteen votes in the district, when there may be more than two hundred cast. Further, this district of Lions International reaches from Morehead City and Wilmington to Raleigh. During the past four years Wake County has had three Governors. So the eastern counties of the district now feel that they are entitled to nominate and elect the Governor this time. Also, they remind us that the Zebulon Club is only five years old, and as far as Lionism is concerned, has done a fine job, and in due time will receive its honors. Also, I would like one to ask the members of this club whether or not one single penny has been spent by the club in behalf of my candidacy. “Even Better Than Before” “My promise to you, if re-elected Mayor, is that I will perform my duties to the best of my ability, and I feel that it will be even better than the last four years. My main interest is now, and will con tinue to be, to do all I possibly can to see that Zebulon goes forward. My purpose will be to have a gov ernment for all our people, by all our people. I also believe that every section of our town should receive the same facilities.
