WISCONSIN—The first self-contained electric start er for home power lawn mowers has just been announced by the Jacobsen Manufacturing Co. With this new development, it is now possible to start your power mower as easily as you start your car or vacuum cleanei A light step on the Tip Toe > starter and the engine purrs into action to provide easy, smooth power mowing. The new self contained electric starter means School Committee Evaluates Shepard Representatives of the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges visited with Shepard High School, Zebulon, April 12, 14, and 15, to make an evaluative study of the school’s program. Local School Board members and the Chairman, Mr. T. E. Hales along with Mr. C. V. Whitley, Member of Wake County Board of Education, were present at the first general session on Wednesday night, April 13, to welcome the members of the visiting commit tee headed by Dr. Rudolph Jones, Professor of Education, Fayette ville State Teachers College. Several conferences were held with student groups at which time the pupils interpreted practices and techniques to the committee with respect to the school’s philosophy. Parents and patrons as well .is students and faculty members demonstrated untiring efforts dur ing the process of evaluation. There was great enthusiasm on the part of all persons concerned. A final written report on com mittee findings will be made within the next several weeks. However, final action on the school’s application for member ship in the Southern Association will not be taken until October. The oral report, which was made at the closing session by the vis iting committee Friday afternoon, April 15, indicated that many de sirable practices were observed during the evaluation. Several con structive criticisms were offered which can prove of inestimable value in improving the instruc tional program. Planning a Garden? This new starter is just one of many features that have been in troduced by Jacobsen. They were the first to put rubber tires on power mowers, then pneumatic tires; they also pioneered a power mower for putting greens and made the first automatic recoil starter. The electric starter is another forward step in making it easy to have and really enjoy a smooth and well kept lawn. TO LOCAL CITIZENS: The Wakelon School faculty en dorses the idea of raising funds by the School Appreciation Dinner and for the purposes stated in the letter written to all school patrons who are being given an opportunity to buy a ticket. We feel that it will mean a great deal to the community to have the Wakelon School become a mem ber of the Southern Association of Colleges since it is the highest honor a school can receive only about one fourth of the schools in North Carolina are members of this group. Richards, 21, whose wife, Lucille Gay, lives in Black Creek, is a member of the Seventh Army in Germany. The comprehensive and inten sive training of U. S. combat units stationed throughout Germany is coordinated by the Seventh Army. Private Richards, a smoke gene rator operator in the 4th Chemi cal Smoke Generator Company, entered the Army in September, 1954, and received basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C. He is a 1954 graduate of Wake lon High School. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Richards, live on Route 4, Zebulon. Lonnie T. Watkins, son of Mrs. Annie P. Rainey, Route 1, Knightdale, is among 26,000 sol diers slated to participate in Exer cise Apple Jack during May at the Yakima Firing Center, Wash. Apple Jack will test the effici ency of infantry and support units in mountainous and desert terrain. The simulated use of atomic weapons will be one of the condi tions of the exercise. Watkins, who entered the Army in August, 1953, is regularly sta tioned at Fort Lewis, Wash., as a member of Battery C of the 2nd Infantry Division’s 38th Field Ar tillery Battalion. Attending School Donald H. Baker, fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Baker of Route 3, Zebulon, is attending the Naval Electrician’s Mate School and is scheduled to gradu ate April 29. Nineteen schools at the Naval Training Center here give special ized training to thousands of Navy men yearly. The schools also train students from allied Navies under the Mu tual Defense Assistance Pact.
