Forty-four foreign students are expected here. Recreation Gets Major Part of Funds from UF A major portion, to be exact SISOO —of the United Fund budget has been allocated to the £ebulon Recreation Commission which con ducts summer activities at both Wakelon and Shepard schools. The SIOOO received by the com mission last year was spent, ac cording to a spokesman, primarily for salaries. “We could not see in vesting hundreds of dollars in equipment,” he stated, “unless it would be properly used and cared for.” Also, he added, careful su pervision of children at play is imperative for safety’s sake. A major undertaking of the Rec reation Commission during the past summer was the completion of tennis courts at Wakelon School. They were begun by the school, but construction came almost to a standstill for lack of funds. Ap Three Women's Clubs Hold October Terms The Zebulon Junior Woman’s Club held its regular meeting Tues day night, October 18, at the Club House with Mrs. Gilmer Parrish, president, presiding. Mrs. Franklin Jones, program chairman, introduced as her guest speaker Mr. Fred Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Wake County Schools, who spoke on “Education at the Crossroad.” Mrs. Norman Screws reported on the District Meeting held at Bonlee on October 5. Mrs. El wood Perry explained the exhibit that was on display at the district meeting. Mrs. Crafton Hudson reported on the fair booth project. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Ralph Bunn and Mrs. Joe Wood who were hostesses. Senior Club The Senior Woman’s Club held its October meeting in the social room of the Methodist Church with Mesdames Wallace Chamblee, M. J. Sexton, A. R. House hos tesses. On entering the guests were served punch and cookies. The program was on Public Af fairs. Mrs. Howard Massey, lead er, presented Mrs. Percy D. Rich ardson of the Corinth Holder School. She in turn, presented twelve of her fifth grade pupils in an Indian program. Two girls re cited the 23rd Psalm; one gave it in Indian interpretation. Stories songs and poems depicted the lives and customs of the Indians. Mrs. Ivey Smith was accompanist. The pupils showed much executive proximately $125 was furnished by the commission to give Zebulon two well-lighted courts considered by local players to be well buiß and well maintained. About S2OO was spent for mis cellaneous equipment (soft balls, bats, etc.), and the Wakelon School activities bus was rented to take children on swimming parties. Besides sponsoring daily recrea tional programs for a six-weeks period and seasonal athletic tour naments, the commission also backed the Fourth of July Parade participated in by various youth groups such as the Girl and Boy Scouts. Recreation Commission mem bers are Mrs. Evelyn Creech, Dr. B. D. Thomas, Vaiden Whitley, Ed Ellington, Pete Bryant, the Rev. Troy Barrett, and G. H. Temple. ability and good training through their expressions not only in their program but in arts, crafts and modeling in their exhibit which was on display. Mrs. Massey told what the Na tional Congress of American In dians are doing to try to help the 400,000 Indians now in America. There is a great problem of health, education and housing for our In- US sbl Fred Smith dian people. It should be recog nized as a federal responsibility. Dianne Bailey, six years old, who has won awards many times with her songs, sang two numbers. Mrs. Exum Chamblee, president, presided over the business session. It was decided to change the meeting* to the fourth Tuesday af ternoon of each month at the club house. Zebulon, N. C., Friday, October 21, 1955 44 Students Expected to Visit Local Community in November Halloween Stunt To Aid Needy Set For Local Youths Halloween “pranks” with a new twist will take on world-wide sig nificance here on Sunday, October 30. Under the direction of Rev. Troy Barrett, Pastor of the Metho dist Church, the young people of the Methodist and Baptist Churches will cooperate in a novel Halloween Stunt. All homes in Zebulon will be canvassed by the young people and householders are asked to respond to their “trick or treat” request by giving unused or old clothing. This program is in cooperation with the Church World Service, New Wind sor, Maryland. The clothing will be shipped to New Windsor and from there will be sent to areas of the world where they are needed. Rev. Barrett asks that people in this community bundle up their old clothing and be ready for the “pranksters” on October 30 be tween 5 and 6 p.m. People who will be away from their homes on this date are asked to bundle up the clothing, leave them on the front porch with a light burning. In communities where this pro gram has been carried out police report that mischief and destruc tion were at a minimum, saying youths were too busy working for Christ on Halloween. There were thirty-two present. The next meeting will be held November 22 with Mrs. Wallace Temple leader, with Mesdames W. C. Campen, Fred Page and Foster Finch hostesses. Garden Club Mr. Willis Honeycutt of Fal lon’s Florist of Raleigh spoke well and demonstrated ably various Christmas decorations at the Oc tober meeting of the Garden Club held Tuesday night in the home of Mrs. J. C. Debnam. Mr. Honeycutt prepared an ar rangement featuring a madonna, and also table decorations. H 3 em phasized the importance of size in relation to the table. He also ad vised using evergreens and ber ries from your own yard. Beau tiful things don’t have to be ex pensive, and the natural graceful lines of growing plants, empha sized by touches of color in va rieties of ornaments, he said, can hardly be improved upon. Members were permitted to ask questions concerning the arrange ments while they were being made, and learned much about propor tion, balance, and design. During the business session plans were made to attend the District meeting in Smithfield next week. A delicious dessert with coffee was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Debnam and Mrs. W. B. Bunn. An arrangement by Garden Club members will be placed either in Whitley Furniture Company or the Wakelon School Cafeteria each month. / Forty-four students from all over the world are expected to be in Zebulon the weekend of November 4-6 as guests of people of this community, local leaders of “The World Comes to Zebu lon” event learned Tuesday night. The students, now in their first year of study in America, are studying at the University Hh ul Pheem Rachananand, a student at the University of North Caro lina from Thailand, will be one of the 44 guests from foreign coun tries in the community for the “World Comes to Zebulon” pro gram the weekend of November 4-6. p. r. a. Barbecue! In order to finance this year’s j project, new curtains for the school auditorium, the Wakelon High School P. T. A. is sponsoring a Barbecue Supper Friday, October 28, 1955. Supper will be served j in the school cafeteria from 5 p.m. I to 8 p.m. The menu will consist of barbecue, slaw, potato salad, cof fee and home-made pie or cake. The price of tickets for this meal S is sl. each. All members of the P. T. A. Executive Council now have tickets for sale. Tickets will also be on sale at the door. 18l y. m A Jflft Miss Elizabeth Johnson, North Carolina Methodist Conference Di rector of Children’s Work, Dur ham, will teach the course, “Teaching Children in the Church School,” at the Christian Work ers’ School to be held at the Zeb ulon Methodist Church, Oct. 23-26. This course is for teachers of nur- j sery, kindergarten, primaries, jun iors, additional sessions, those who help with the Vacation Church School in the summer, and others interested in attending. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers of North Carolina, and will spend the weekend in Zebulon homes as a part of a major pro gram to increase international understanding. The large number of students who will be in Zebulon was made known to the local “World Comes to Zebulon” Committee at its meeting Tuesday night, when the Rev. B. A. Asbury, presiding at the session, said that response of the foreign students to the invita tion was enthusiastic. Homes Needed Seven homes which w'ill accept two students each and thirty homes which will accept one or more stu dents are required to house the guests. The thirty individual stu dents include eleven women and nineteen men. The housing committee, com posed of Mrs. M. J. Sexton of the Methodist Church, Mrs. Willie B. Hopkins of the Baptist Church, and Tom Monk of the Roman Catholic Church, has set a deadline for ac ceptances of Friday, October 28. The committee urges that fam ilies wishing to serve as hosts con tact them as early as possible. All hosts and hostesses are in vited to attend, with their guests, a banquet at Wakelon School Fri day night, November 4, and a bar becue supper Saturday night at Davis Armory. Families will pick up their guests at the Municipal Building, which will be the central meeting place for all activities, Friday afternoon. Transportation for Saturday morning and afternoon activities will be furnished by the committee. The public is invited to a dance for the students at the high school gymnasium Friday night, and an evening program at the armory Saturday night, as well as worship services at the several churches of the community, at which • the guests will speak. Wakelon School Homecoming Set Friday, October 21, is home coming at Wakelon. During the early afternoon a gala parade will start the festivities which will end with a football game, scheduled for 8 p.m., in which Wakelon Bull dogs meet the Millbrook Eleven. During the half-time of the game, a homecoming queen will be crowned. Each Wakelon high school or ganization is sponsoring a girl in the homecoming queen contest.
