She will undergo an eye operation this week. * Mrs. Susan Alford, who return ed from Rex Hospital Thursday, is now at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Berkley Alford. * Miss Joellen Gill and a teacher friend were weekend visitors in the Gill home. Mrs. I. D. Gill, Miss Gill’s mother, returned to Stratford with her daughter for a week’s visit. * Mrs. Launch Faircloth of Clin ton was an overnight guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Talton, Wednesday. * Miss Nancy White of Hender son, sister of Mrs. Franklin Jones, was a visitor in the Jones home last week. * John Zebulon Davis, who un derwent an operation for double hernia last week, has returned home and is recuperating splen didly, according to his mo'her, Mrs. Ferd Davis. * Frances Massey has returned home from Duke Hospital where she underwent a heart operation. According to reports she is doing very well indeed. The Zebulon Record Bridge Mrs. Garland Godwin was hos tess to the Teacher's Bridge Club at her home on Lee Street last Thursday evening. The house was artistically dec orated with arrangements of dried plants and potted flowers. Club members playing were Mrs. I. D. Gill, Mrs. Howard Beck, Mrs. George Tucker, Mrs. Ben Thomas, Mrs. Helen Gregory, Mrs. Lois Wall, and Miss Mary Lacy Palmer. Guests were Mrs. Alger Batts, Mrs. Franklin Jones, Mrs. Charles Hester, Mrs. E. D. Rountree and Mrs. Rodney McNabb. . Club high score prize went to Mrs. Louis Wall, and low score prize was awarded to Mrs. George Tucker. Mrs. Rodney McNabb was the recipient of guest high score prize, with Mrs. E. D. Rountree winning the floating prize. The hostess served strawberry shortcake, party sandwiches, pickles and coffee to her guests and members after the progres sions. Dr. and Mrs. George Tucker were hosts to the Couples Bridge Club Friday night at their home on Sycamore Street. Enhancing dried and live ar rangements decorated the hosts’ home. Members playing were Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Finch, Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Murray, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Potter, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Lowery, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Debnam, and Mr. and Mrs. Carsey Tippett. High score prize was awarded to the Douglas Finches, low score prize was presented to the Thur man Murrays, and Jack Potter re ceived the floating prize. Mrs. Moore is the former Mamie Brooks Pearce. * Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Lewis, Jr. announce the birth of a daugh ter, Bonnie Jean, Saturday, Jan. 14, at Rex Hospital. Mrs. Lewis is the former Jean Bailey. * Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Raper announce the birth of a son on January 10 at Rex Hospital. Mrs. Raper is the former Mary Callahan of Knightdale. * Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Willson of Greenville announce the birth of a daughter, Tonnya Anne, Jan. 6, at the Franklin Memorial Hos pital in Louisburg. Mrs. Willson is the former Ann Poole. * Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Mrs. Susan Alford Ferd Davis Speaks To Garden Club Conservation was the topic of a speech delivered by Ferd Davis, local attorney, at the Carmen Flowers Garden Club which met in the home of Mrs. Riggsbv Mas sey last week. Mr. Davis said that many fields are improperly terraced, which causes an untold amount of erosion. Land not in cultivation should have cover crops so as to keep the topsoil from washing away. Davis was a former member of the N. C. Conservation and De velopment Committee. During the business session, the club discussed ways in which to earn money to pay for some of the club’s indebtednesses. Refreshments consisted of lime ice, party sandwiches, nuts and cookies. Mrs. Exum Chamblee was co hostess. The February meeting will be in the home of Mrs. Jerry Buffaloe. News and Observer Features Police Chief Zebulon’s Police Chief, Willie B. Hopkins, was featured in a write up in yesterday’s News and Obser ver. The article enumerated the vari ous jobs that he is connected with. For example, he is the town manager, police and fire chief, town clerk and treasurer, build ing and electrical inspector, water and streets superintendent, and clerk of the Zebulon Recorder’s Court. It also stated that Hopkins’ du ties do not stop with those chorees. He is active in civic affairs, chief of the Rural Fire Department, a flower raiser, and has been a mem ber of the Wake County Fire Com mission since it was organized about two years ago. Hopkins once was described as North Carolina’s public official with the most jobs. Mr. and Mrs. Foster Lewis and son, Bryant, visited Mrs. Emma Lewis Thursday night. Mrs. Buddy Watkins visited Mrs. Dorothy Faison in Rolesville Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Bailey Stallings and Mrs. Millard Stallings are visiting rel atives in Florida. We welcome Mr. and and Mrs. Atlas Geans and family who have recently moved to Pilot. Mr. Cloyce Alford of Durham spent the weekend with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Zollie Alford. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Perry of Ra leigh were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Hubert Bunn.
