Hop kins. Little Vernetta Holden, daugh ter of Mrs. Eula Holden, died tragically when her home went up in flames. According to the story given by her mother, Mrs. Holden rocked the child to sleep, laid it in its bed, and then went to visit a neigh bor who lives about 75 yards from the dwelling to watch television. She took her other two daughters, three and four, with her. When she returned, the house was in flames. She attempted to rescue the baby but was driven back by the flames. She was se verely burned and was taken to St. Agnes Hospital for treatment. The four-room frame tenant house was located on the farm of Mrs. Loraa Ferrell, four miles north of Wakefield, near Zebulon. Loss was estimated at $1,000. The smoldering ashes were combed for the child Monday night, but her body was not discovered until Tuesday morning, accord ing to Officer Hopkins. Wake County Coroner Marshall W. It was learned that Mrs. Holden said she built up a big fire in the stove before she left the child in order that the house be kept warm. Mrs. Holden suffered second de gree burns.
