Mayor, Board Defend Him
Willie B. Hopkins, veteran po-:
lice chief of Zebulon, was acquitted
of violating a city fire ordinance in
Raleigh City Court Friday, April 9.
The 42-yeaT-old police chief of
Zebulon, testified that two Raleieh
policemen grabbed his arm and
hustled him toward a door at
Reynolds Coliseum during the At
lantic Coast Conference basketball
tournament.
Hopkins further testified that he
was searching his pockets for a
ticket when he was asked to leave
the aisle at the Coliseum.
City Patrolman A. E. Morris said
Hopkins had been drinking and
quoted the chief as saying, “I ain’t
moving no damn place.”
Another patrolman, R. L. Bunn,
said he assisted Morris in taking
Hopkins to a control room to talk
to him.
The officers said Hopkins was

Patrolman Morris. He said he
tried to find his ticket when Mor

officers hustled him toward a door.
He denied cursing and drinking.
Mayor Ed Hales and the Town

a vote of confidence Saturday after
his acquittal in a Raleigh court.
The following is a statement by
Hales in defense of Zebulon’s pop

the community of Zebulon, I am
greatly distressed by the accounts
in the Raleigh newspapers of the
trial of W. B. Hopkins, chief of
police of the Town of Zebulon, in
Raleigh City Court on a charge of
obstructing the aisle at Reynolds
Coliseum on Friday night, March
4, 1960, during an Atlantic Coast

went, did not reveal the halting,
