“No matter whether we obtain
several hundred or several thou
sand dollars, the entire proceeds
go to the library,” said Sidney
Eddins, project chairman. “The
future of our library, which the
American Legion Auxiliary has
conducted admirably in coopera

depends on the outcome of this

Any kind of useful item with a
resale value is requested by the
Rotarians.
Suggestions include a circulating
oil heater from a person who has
installed central heat; a fan from
a man who has installed air con

man who no longer raises hogs;
an -oil tank from a men who has
installed a heat pump.
“It does not matter how large
or how small the donation is,” said
Eddins, “if it has a resale value we
want it for the White Elephant
auction.
Rotarians have donated use of
trucks to transport largfe items to
the National Guard Armory where
they will be stored until the sale.
All items will be sold at the sale
at absolute auction.
What is a “White Elephant
Sale”?
Chairman Eddins explained that
the King of Siam used to give

The appearance of these five
Democrats is expected to attract
the largest crowd in the history
of a Democratic rally here. It will
be the second time the former
president has made an address
here.
Truman is scheduled to speak at
the State Fair in Raleigh on Thurs
day, October 13. He will attend a
$50-a-plate dinner in the Capital
City Thursday night, where he
will make a short address.
Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Daniel, par
ents of Truman’s son-in-law, will
be guests at the dinner.
At first plans were the ex
President would spend the night
in Zebulon with Mr. and Mrs.
Daniel. Those plans were chang
ed because of the former Presi
dent’s on-the-wing speaking en
gagement.
Robert D. Massey, Chamber of
Commerce president, said a motor

overall preparations for the rally,
expressed appreciation for Robert
Cotton’s assistance in airranging for
Truman’s visit here. Cotton is
Wake County Democratic Execu

“We feel fortunate in having a
former president as speaker for the
rally,” Massey said. “In fact, we
feel very fortunate to have the
‘big five’ to appear in our town.”
Little River Township Precinct
Chairman Willie B. Hopkins said:
“We feel confident that Mr. Tru
man’s visit, along with our next
Governor, Terry Sanford, and
Commissioner of Agriculture L. Y.
Ballentine and Congressman Har
old Cooley, will help make the
rally one of the most successful
ever staged in Wake County.”
Massey also asked for the all

preparing for the rally, and is ex

Eastern Wake County towns are
Zebulon, Wendell, Knightdale, Ea

The event is to be held at the
intersection of Arendell Avenue
and Horton Street. In case of rain,
Massey said, the speakers will be
moved to the National Guard Ar

“It is one of the biggest things
ever to come to our town,” Massey
said. “We are expecting a capacity
crowd for the event.”
