Sp4 Lawrence Perry is at the wheel of the truck, and Pfc Bobby Gravitt is at his right. Dwarfed behind the thundering truck is one of Battery A’s huge 8-inch howitzers, a weapon capable of firing an atomic projectile. Preceding the truck and howitzer in the parade was a jeep carrying Lt. Dewey Brannon and Master Sergeant Ralph Creech. Behind th truck is a scond jeep from Battery A with Pfc. Warren Boykin and Sgt Joseph Raper. Sp4 Loomis Stallings and Pfc Tony Pearce also partici pated in the parade. A second 10-ton truck and 8-inch howitzer from the Zebulon National Guard unit participated in Armed Forces Day ceremonies in Greensboro. The truck and howitzer shown above were displayed Saturday afternoon in Cameron Village. St. Augustine Professor Shepard Finals Speaker Commencement plans for Shep ard School have been released by Principal G. L. Crews. The activities began Wednesday night with a concert by the glee club. Today (Thursday) will be Hon ors Day with the principal speaker being Dr. Theodore Speigner of the North Carolina College in Dur ham. The baccalaureate services will be held Sunday, May 27, at 4 o’ clock. The Rev. J. W. Jones, pas tor of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church of Raleigh, will deliver the address. Class Day program will be held May 29 at 10:30 a.m. Dr. Joseph Jones, Jr., professor Congressman Is Speaker at Bunn The Honorable L. H. Fountain, Congressman from District 2, will address the Bunn graduating class. He will be introduced by Senator W. M. Jolly of Louisburg. Baccalaureate services will be held Sunday, May 27, with the Rev. R. Paul Kercher delivering the sermon. The commencement address is set for June 1. All programs get underway at 8 p/m. Driver, will (Continued on Page 10) Governor Appears on Program Honoring Wendell's Bo Todd The Governor of North Carolina may have been present but a hand some bespectacled Wendell High School yoUth was the honored guest. Furney A. “Bo” Todd, Jr., was honored by the Wendell Lions at a banquet Monday night. Other townsmen were also present at the meeting held in the school cafe teria. Bo was second place winner in the botany-biological division of the National Science Fair held in Seattle, Washington. His project I was The Effect of Irradiation on Black Shank Fungus. Governor Terry Sanford praised the high school youth and his teacher, Mrs. Elwood Perry. The Governor said what is im portant in quality education is “providing a means and place where young people can seek ex cellence. Excellence is something for which we must forever strive.” “This business of quality edu cation is to seek excellence,” San ford continued. “It is designed to achieve excellence and to develop the kind of men and women who can provide leadership for tomor row.” Sanford declared there is no more important profession in the nation and no greater need than the teaching profession. “What she (Mrs. Perry) has done is to literally touch the lives of hundreds of boys and girls,” Sanford said. Berry. The Rev. Herbert Maynard, pas tor of Central Baptist Church, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon to the seniors Sunday, May 27, at 8 p.m. The glee club will provide the music. Former Methodist Pastor Will Address Wakelon Graduates; Carl Goerch Is Finals Speaker A former minister of Zebulon Methodist Church will deliver the baccalaureate address to the grad uating seniors of Wakelon School Sunday, May 27, at 8 p.m. The Rev. Troy J. Barrett, now ipastor of Wesley Methodist in Warrenton, has chosen the topic: “The Lure in Learning.” The speaker is a native of Fay etteville and a graduate of Louis burg and Wofford Colleges and Duke Divinity School. In the N. C. Methodist Confer ence he has served as State Direc tor of the Methodist Student Movement, Conference Director of Youth Work, Director of Rec reation and Religious Life at the Methodist Home for Children in Raleigh and has also served the Broadway Charge. In Warrenton, the Rev. Mr. Barrett has served as chairman of the Recreation Commission, presi dent of the Rotary Club, and is incoming president of the PTA. The Rev. W. C. Barham, pastor of Baptist Tabernacle, will pro nounce the invocation, and the Rev. W. K. Quick, pastor of Zeb ulon Methodist Church, will lead the 'benediction. Music will he furnished by the choral group. Class night exercises will be held Thursday night, May 31, at 8 o’clock. During the past 34 months, a total of 104 new mem bers have been received: 14 children, 90 adults and youth. These have included Free Will Baptists, Disciples of Christ, Epis copalians, Presbyterians, Baptists, Quaker, Lutheran, Holiness and Methodist. Spirited Political Contests To Be Decided on Saturday Zebu Ion Town Manager Willie B. Hopkins expects a “relatively light vote” in the Democratic pri mary Saturday. Hopkins said he feels this is because it is an off-year election. He said he does not expect more than 750-800 ballots to be cast. Wade Privette is registrar for Little River Township (Zebulon). R. R. Thompson, acting town manager of Wendell, said he is “expecting a record vote” for Mark’s Creek Township (Wen dell). He said he feels it will be the ‘^biggest vote we have ever had.” I Mrs. Bourke Bilisoly is regis | trar for Mark’s Creek Township. Zebulon Attorney Ferd Davis and former Wendell School princi pal Carl Grad are seeking seats on the Wake County Board of Education. W. J. Ammons, Jr., a Wendell farmer, Thomas Bailey of Wendell, a prominent business executive, and Billy K. Hopkins, a Zebulon farmer, have been actively cam paigning for seats on the Wake County Board of Commissioners. Willie Bullock of Zebulon is un opposed for justice of the peace. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 pjn.
