the post of mayor Thursday night,
June 21.
Commissioner Leo Britt was

Patrol Warning For Holidays
Due to the increased number of
traffic fatalities on the highways
of North Carolina, a special holi
day enforcement program will be
put into action over an extended
time. This includes the weekend
of June 29, 30, July 1 and July 4,
and the weekend of July 6, 7 and 8,
according to Patrolman B. K.
Tucker.
Patrolman Tucker said the
Highway Patrol has cancelled all
leaves and deploys all available
enforcement personnel and equip
ment, such as speed watches, radar
cars, and unmarked patrol cars.
Also they will carry on checking
stations and smokeout operations
around local night spots to deter
the drinking driver.
A driver will -be stopped every
15 minutes, Tucker said, and cau
tioned of the dangers he may en
counter on his trip. The driver’s
name and license number will be
taken for patrol records.
Patrolman Tucker said the
Highway Patrol cannot maintain
safety by themselves. Safety is
with the driver of the vehicle.
The driver should execute every
caution during the holiday week
ends. There will be more ve
hicles on the highways and more
caution will be necessary.
precincts, where he polled 462 to
49. Bailey, however, won by an
equally impressive margin in his
home precinct of Wendell carrying
the box there with 529 to 29.
The other race was won by
Troy M. Howard of Morrisville.
He defeated J. E. Harris of Cary.
Howard polled 2,220 to defeat Har
ris, who had a vote of 1,533.
In the first primary Harris led
a field of six candidates. He then
had 3,724 votes, Howard, 3,204.
Hopkins took four out of six
precincts in District One. He had
22 out of 28 precincts in the rural
areas of the county and 15 out of
35 precincts in the City of Raleigh.
Hopkins is the first elected com
missioner from the Zebulon area
since the late Wallace Chamblee
relinquished the post. Chamblee
was succeeded in 1950 by C. N.
Robertson of Knightdale, who did
not seek reelection.
Hopkins’ tenure of office will be
four years. He will be paid a
salary of $600 annually. He will
take office the first Monday in
December.
The new commissioner said he
is going to dedicate himself for
service to the people of Wake
County.
He quoted a saying of ex-World
Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis:
“It was a hard fight, ma, but I
won.’’ This he applies to himself.
Hopkins said Bailey called him
Saturday night and congratulated
him and wished him success as
the representative from eastern
Wake County.
Hopkins is a prominent mer
chant and farmer in the Hopkins
community. He is married to the
former Pearl Robertson of Vance
County.
It was one of the lightest elec
tions on record in the county and
will cost nearly a dollar a vote.
Only 4,090 voted in the primary
which is expected to cost $3,800.
