Wendell Merchant Is Located
In Hospital Monday Morning
Hyman Katz, 64-year-old Wen
dell merchant, was found Mon
day after an extensive search fol
lowed the report he was missing.
He had not been seen since last
Thursday.
Katz was located in Wake Me
morial Hospital. He used the
name “George Alexander” on the
hospital records. He reportedly
underwent surgery for a strangu
lated hernia.
Katz has operated a mercantile
establishment in Wendell for more I
than 30 years. Prior to coming to ]
Wendell he owned stores in Wil
son and Fairmont.
A White Russian Jew who is
now a naturalized American citi
zen, he holds bachelor of arts and
master of science degrees from the
University of Berlin, a theology
degree from Union Hebrew Col
lege, and a law degree from How
ard Law School in Boston. He
also attended the University of
Maine and had a year at a medical
college in Atlanta.
Katz has been a candidate for
the House of Representatives from
Wake County. He is a bachelor.

hanger. He now makes his home
with his daughter, Mrs. Wayne
Cook, Jr., of Wendell.
The couple had two sons who
died in infancy.
Now the 25-room brick struc
ture stands vacant. Missing from
its big dining room are the hoards
of hungry boarders. Its halls are
silent, the footsteps of the many
tourists tramping now in the be
yond. The lobby with its lumpy,
overstuffed furniture is quiet as a
mausoleum, with no talk of the
day’s latest happenings, political
gossiping, newspaper rattling in
a tired businessman’s hands, or
a sleepy snoring customer.
The town is now without a place
for the tourist. An end of Ameri
cana died in Wendell last month.

merchandising, tours and any oth
er means; 5) to establish a work
ing relationship between tobacco
farmers and all other segments of
the tobacco industry in order to
promote the welfare of the total
tobacco industry; and in order to
properly prosecute the objects and
purpose set forth above; the co
operation shall have full power
and authority to receive dues, do
nations and borrow money.
Chapters of the association have
been organized in Wake, Pitt,
Johnston, Nash, Franklin, Car
teret, Wayne, Sampson, Robeson,
Columbus, Bladen, Duplin, Har
nett, Wilson and Mecklenburg, Va.
Plans are being made to organ
ize chapters in the remaining
counties of North Carolina where
tobacco is grown, and chapters in
Virginia, South Carolina and Flor
ida.
There are two types of members,
i active and associate. Regardless
j of the type, the membership fee is
| $5 a year.
| An active member is any indi
j vidual who is a resident of North
] Carolina or 'any other State in
the United States who derives a
; major portion of his income from
producing tobacco.
An associate member is any in
| dividual, firm or corporation who
! is interested in tobacco farming
I and derives, either directly or in
directly, from a farm income.
The board of directors determine
who is eligible for membership.
The board is composed of W. A.
' White, C. R. Taylor, Walter Pain
j ter, Joe W. Todd and Walter Dean,
i Jr.
i It will be impossible for a few
individuals to gain control of this
new tobacco organization. The
business will be conducted by a
board of directors. Each county
will be allowed one director for
each 4,000 acres of tobacco but
will not exceed five. The term of
office of each director is two years.
Dean, president of the organiza
tion, said: “The Flue Cured
Tobacco Growers Association, Inc.,
was not formed to fight existing
farm organizations. The organ
izers recognize the value of such
organizations. However, it was
felt that the importance of tobac
co, the number one crop in the
state, justifies an organization of
its own, an organization controlled
by tobacco farmers.’’
