Pvt Norman Dean Begins Basic Training Private Norman G. Dean III, son of Sgt. and Mrs. Norman G. Dean of Route 4, Zebulon, has begun his Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S. C., where he has been assigned to Company A, 1 Battalion, 1 Training Regiment, of the U. S. Army Training Center, Infantry. During his basic training he will be introduced to a wide variety of infantry skills, along with intensive physical condition ing. He will attend classes in the traditions of the service, character guidance, and the role of the Army in the world today. Many of his instructors are combat veterans of World War II and the Korean conflict. Finch Reunion The children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Finch gathered Sunday, July 28, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer D. Finch for the annual Finch reunion. After all the relatives had ar rived and greetings were ex changed, a bountiful and delicious dinner was spread and soon every one was seated, devouring and enjoying the best ever food with laughter and interesting news, hearing the activities each one had done since the reunion a year ago. The party was held at their home on Wake field Street. Guests were Cary Canady, Roxie Temple, Michael Scarboro and Walt Martin of Raleigh, his cousin. A special guest was his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ara Martin. Refreshments were cake, deco rated with white icing, trimmed in red and with circus animals adorning it, ice cream and favors. Franklin County Native Dies Jim Denton, 37, of Youngsville, Route 1, died July 19 at his home following a heart attack. He was a life-long resident of Franklin County and a farmer in the Riley community. Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia Strickland, his mother, Mrs. Neta Denton of the home; two brothers, Vance Denton of Zebulon and Bill Denton, Jr., of Wake Forest; five sisters, Mrs. Irene Tant of Raleigh, Mrs. Hettie Cates of Knightdale, Mrs. Rachel Puckett of Louisburg, Mrs. Lizzie Price of Wendell and Mrs. Viola Price of Youngsville. Funeral services were held on Sunday at White’s Funeral Home in Louisburg with the Rev. Joe Zimmerman of Bethany Baptist Church and the Rev. John Darnell of Harris Chapel Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Harris Church cemetery. A pall of white carnations covered the casket. His nephews served as pallbearers. The Bethany Church quartet sang, “He Cares for Me,” “A Mansion over the Hilltop,” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Mrs. Wilbur Halos Feted on Birthday A surprise birthday celebration was given Mrs. Wilbur Hales on Monday night, July 22. Employees of Pope’s store here were the hosts. The ice cream supper was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Fowler. The social was held on the lawn of the Fowler home. Mrs. Hales, who was 30 on July 22, is the former Ercelle Strickland. She was presented a gift of match ed luggage. Attending the social were Mr. and Mrs. Fowler, Mr. and Mrs. Edison Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Graham Jenkins, Mr. and Mrs. Garland Faulkner, and Mr. and Mrs. Theodis Strickland. Second Birthday Given Youngster Cynthia Tant was feted by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Odell Tant of Wendell, July 20, on her second birthday. The centerpiece of her first birthday, a raven-haired doll, was kept refrigerated for a year to be used on Cynthia’s second cake. The doll’s skirt was the second cake, decorated in beautiful colors of pink, white and green. Refreshments were cup cakes and ice cream. Each young guest received favors. Guests were Lynn Driver, Tim Tippett, Richard Denny, Jr., Kim Chamblee, Barbara Denny, Linda Wood and Lisa Ann Pope. Give courtesy top billing in the inventory of life. 4-H Club Delegates Miss Faye Sawyer and Avon Privette, Jr., were delegates from the local 4-H Club to the annual State 4-H Club Week held on the campus of N. C. State College last week. Miss Sawyer was a winner in the dairy foods division in March and received an expense paid trip. Miss Kay Antone was also a dairy foods winner but was unable to attend the conclave. Miss Sawyer’s winning recipe was Instant Mocha Mist. The two Zebulon delegates were among more than 1400 4-H club boys and girls from across the state to attend the convention. Pippin, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon L. Pippin of Route 2, Zebulon is undergoing nine-week basic training at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, 111. The intensive recruit training pro gram includes naval orientation and history, custom and etiquette, basic military law, seamanship and basic shipboard routine, sentry duty and military drill, physical fitness, ord nance and gunnery, damage control, swimming, first aid and survival. During their training period re cruits receive tests and interviews which determine their future assign ments in the Navy. WENDELL, NORTH CAROLINA Varied Opportunities Available At Center Day and evening school edu cational opportunities will be available this fall at the W. W. Holding Industrial Education Cen ter of Wake County which is lo cated on U. S. Highway 401 ten miles south of the State Capitol Building in Raleigh. Classes will begin in September and October. The Center is a geographical area school in which industrial, trade, and technical subjects will be offered to selected youths and adults. Pre-employment trade and technology offerings will be open to individuals who are graduates of an accredited high school or who have a high school equivalency certificate. Entry in to these programs will be based on tests, an application form, high school records, references, an interview, and a health certificate, if necessary. Day school curriculums wiucn will be offered this fall aTe: auto mobile mechanics, plumbing and steamfitting, machine shop prac tice, radio and television servicing, electrical installation and main tenance, drafting, civil technology, and practical nursing. Trade pre employment curriculums are one year or four quarters in length; technology curriculums are two years in length. They will include shop, laboratory, and classroom instruction. Extension courses will be pro vided for those individuals cur rently employed who seek to up date themselves in their occupa tion. A variety of extension courses in trades and technologies, supervisory development training, fire service training, and adult farmer education will be offered in terms of the interests and needs of individuals employed in these occupations in the area. An effort is being made to offer courses in distributive educa tion. Entry into these programs will be based on an application form and an interview. Short, intensive industrial courses to meet the specific needs of specific employers can be or ganized and offered. Applications for these programs are being accepted now.
