Shower Is Given
Sept. Bride-Elect
Miss Carolyn Pippin, September
1 bride-elect, was complimented
Wednesday night, August 7, by
Mrs. Claud Dunn, Mts. James
Daniel and Mrs. Paul Brown.
The miscellaneous shower was
held in the annex of Zebulon
Baptist Church. The piano was
decorated with bride dolls and
greenery. Companion arrange
ments were throughout the social
hall.
Miss Pippin was presented a
pink carnation corsage and gifts
of china and crystal by the host
esses.
Presiding over the party bridal
games was Mrs.. Billy Privette.
The refreshment table was
covered with a white imported
linen cloth and centered with an
all-white arrangement of gladioli,
mums, baby’s breath, and inter
spersed with greenery. The ar
rangement was flanked with pink
burning tapers. Appointments
were of silver and crystal.
Mrs. Woodrow Pippin, mother
of the honoree, presided at the
punch bowl. Refreshments were
lime ice, bell and heart-shaped
sandwiches, individual bridal
cakes, cheese straws and nuts.
Miss Margaret Ann Dunn, who
is engaged to be married in the
future, was also remembered with
a gift from the hosteses.
Approximately 50 guests were
present for the social. ,
Pvt. Hinton Now
Completed Training
Army Pvt. Jimmy D. Hinton, 17,
whose wife, Wills, lives at 902
Peace Terr., Raleigh, completed
eight weeks of training as a held
communication crewman under
the Reserve Forces Act program
at The U. S. Army Training Cen
ter, Fork Polk, La., Aug. 9.
Hinton, son of Mrs. Ilia M.
Hatcher, 508 Ileagnes Rd., Raleigh,
entered the Army last March and
completed basic training at Fort
Gordon, Ga.
He was employed by Star Elec
tric Co., in Greensboro, before
entering the Army. His father,
Alton B. Hinton, lives in Wendell.

Engagement
Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Smith of
Zebulon announce the engage
ment of their daughter, Linda
Carol, to Grady Ray Creech. The
prospective bridegroom is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Creech, Jp.
of Zebulon. An October 13 wed
ding is planned.
PLAYOFFS
Final play-offs in the Franklin
Wake Softball League to deter
mine the league champions began
at Pearce Church diamond on Sat
urday night, August 24.
All six teams are competing.
These teams include Pilot, Pearces,
Zebulon Methodist, Hopkins, New
Hope and Wake Cross Roads.
The participating teams played
a double play-off, each team hav
ing two losses before being elimi
nated.
The 7:30 opener between
Pearces and New Hope saw
Pearces defeat the New Hope nine,
5-3. Zebulon Methodist rallied
to defeat Hopkins, 8-3, in the nine
o’clock game.
Tuesday night, August 27, Pilot
met Wake Cross Roads in the
opening game. The score was 4-2,
with Pilot winning on Bobby
Strickland’s two-run homer. At
the nine o’clock game New Hope
won over Hopkins, taking the
game with a score of 5-4. The
loss eliminated Hopkins.
Thursday (tonight) finds two
preliminary winners from the
Saturday night games facing each
other. Pearces will meet Zebu
lon Methodist at eight o’clock.
No games are scheduled after
tonight (Thursday) until Tuesday
night, September 3 because of the
Labor Day holiday.

Plans Meeting
Zebulon Woman’s Club will meet
Tuesday night, September 3, in
it first meeting of the new club
year, President Margaret Cannady
announced this week.
Mrs. Cannady said the program
will be informal and brief. She
urges any woman interested in the
organization to contact her or be
present for this meeting.
Hosteses for the meeting will be
Mrs. F. E. Bunn, Mrs. J. F. Col
trane and Mrs. E. H. Moser.

Latin Graduates
Five Zebulon teenagers were
tutored in beginning Latin this
summer. They were Drew Can
nady, Thurston Debnam, Julia
McNabb, Rodney McNabb and
Guy Massey.
Mrs. Doris H. Privette was the
instructor, and called the session
“an interesting experiment.”
The Wakelon students will re
ceive no academic credit. Study
was from a North Carolina State
adopted text book.
The classes were held in the
home of Mrs. Privette.
Police Chase
Speeding Motorist
A Wake sheriff’s deputy and two
Zebulon policemen gave chase
Friday night after a Negro motorist
would not pause long enough for
questioning.
Night Policeman Windel Perry
said Charlie Webb was stopped
“for suspicion” on East Vance
Street Friday night about 10
o’clock. When the officer asked
for Webb’s driver’s license, Perry
said Webb reached down as if he
were going into his pocket for
the license and then pressed the
caT’s accelerator and sped away.
The three officers gave chase
across the east section of town.
Webb abandoned his car on a
country road and left the car on
running foot. The officers did
not apprehend him.
Webb was driving a 1956 Olds
mobile, officers said. He still is
being sought.
Assisting Perry were Sheriff’s
Deputy Graham Bunn and Police
Officer Wilson Stallings.
Twins Celebrate
11th Birthday
Randy and Andy, twin sons of
Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Gay of East
Sycamore St., were honored by
their. parents on their eleventh
birthday, Friday, August 23.
The occasion was held on the
lawn of the Gay home. Social
hours were from five until eight
o’clock.
There were twin tiered birthday
cakes iced in white with a yellow
and blue trim, made by their
mother. Other refreshments were
roasted wieners, potato chips,
pickle and cola drinks.
Dancing and games were en
joyed during the party. Each
guest received favors. Approxi
mately 40 guests were present.

Honor Roll
Anne Creech, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. James Creech, was named
to East Carolina College honor roll
for her excellent record in aca
demic work during the spring
quarter. Miss Creech, a June
graduate of the college will teach
in the Pinehurst school system
beginning in September.
Shepard Grad Is
Being Reassigned
Airman Kenneth H. Davis, whose
guardian, Earnest Adams, resides
at Route 2, Zebulon, is being re
assigned from Lackland Air Force
Base, Texas, to Charleston Air
Force Base, S. C., for training and
duty as a flight operations
specialist.
Airman Davis recently com
pleted United States Air Force
basic military training at Lack
land AFB.
The airman graduated from
James E. Shepard High School.
He attended North Carolina A. &
M. College.
BIRTH
Dr. and Mrs. Charles N. Foshee
of Radford, Va., announce the
birth of a daughter, Elizabeth
Anne, on August 15. Mrs. Foshee
is the former Elizabeth James of
Rocky Mount.
Southern Bell
Expands Plant
Southern Bell has announced
plans for an addition to the present
building at 121 West Morgan St.,
Raleigh, according to R. U. Beck,
manager.
R. N. Rouse and Company of
Goldsboro will begin construction
in a few days on the single-story,
16,000 square foot building.
This building will connect with
the rear of the present building
and will be constructed to support
six doors for future expansion and
will be completed in April, 1964.
The installation of equipment
necessary for customer direct
distance dialing will begin im
mediately upon completion of the
building, and will be ready for
use in September, 1964.
The building and equipment will
cost over $1,000,000 and will per
mit telephone users in the Raleigh,
Apex, Cary, Gamer, Knightdale,
Wendell, Zebulon and Wake Forest
areas to dial their own station-to
station calls direct to over 60,000,
000 telephones in the United States
and Canada.
SWIMMERS
Forty-two youths were certified
by the American National Red
Cross in the beginning swim class
held at the local swimming pool,
Roscoe Spellman announced this
week.
One hundred youths enrolled in
the course, Spellman, manager
instructor, said. Eleven did not
stay long enough to finish the
course. The course was held from
the middle of June to August 12.
The course was open to the
public but only nine children of
non-members enrolled, the in
structor said. Three of these
children completed the course.
Pool staff members express their
appreciation to the following
volunteers for their work in teach
ing the individuals skills in the
course: Phyllis Braswell, Treva
Temple, Jimmy Hawkins, David
Hawkins, Randy Creech, Mickey
Hinton, Ann Davis, Sue Hilliard,
Celeste Jeffreys, Amelia Perry,
Dick Turlington, Janet Griswold,
Fay Finch, and the several parents
who kept record sheets.
Zebulon Airman
Being Reassigned
Airman Nathaniel Montague of
Zebulon is being reassigned from
Lackland AFB, Texas, to Francis
E. Warren AFB, Wyo., for train
ing and duty as an administrative
specialist.
Airman Montague recently com
pleted United States Air Force
basic military training here.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Oretha
Montague of Route 4, Zebulon, he
is a 1963 graduate of James E.
Shepard High School.
