The 8 o’clock game will be played on Benvenue’s grid iron. By Wayne Davis It was Wakelon’s ballgame in the first half against J. F. Webb of Oxford, N. C. They led at half I by 7 to 6. The second half was an other story as Webb scored 19 points to 0 for the Bulldogs, win ning the game 25 to 7. Taking the opening kickoff, Wakelon was unable to gain on three running play.: and were forced to kick. Webb then moved down field for the first score and a 6-0 lead. From this point on Wakelon dominated play in the first half. The Bulldogs scored on an end sweep by Randy Creech from 10 yards out after a 65 yard march culminating runs by Creech and Thurston Debnam. Creech ran the extra point for a 7-6 Wakelon lead that held until mid way the third quarter. Wakelon missed a chance to score when they moved to the two yard line on a pass from sophomore Johnny Clark to Thurston Debnam near the end of the first half. Four attempts ffom that point failed to net a score. Throughout the first half Wake lon was unable to run up the mid dle or off tackle. They were forced to the outside by the big Oxford line. Thurston and Randy led the way on the end sweeps, with Creech gaining 78 yards and Thurston gaining 60 yards, most coming in the first half. Webb High adjusted to the end sweeps dur ing half t,ime and thus stalled the Bulldog attack. Wakelon did mus ter one more scoring threat, but that was killed when a Webb back intercepted a ClaTk to Debnam pass in the end zone. The game was much closer than the score might indicate. Wakelo.i i did a good defensive job except for I the two home run type plays that | were scored for Webb. First game j jitters also were a factor and the Bulldogs were guilty of off sides on a number of occasions. This helped start a couple of drives for the Oxford team. The running of Creech showed that he has not for gotten anything from last year, and if it’s possible, is running harder. Debnam’s running ability will add to the team and his kicking will be one of the team’s strong points. One boot went 45 yards on the fly. The blocking and tackling of Jerry Brayboy and Jerry Bullock looked good. The line did a good job against the larger 3A team. John ny Clark, in his first varsity game, passed for 47 yards and handled himself well. The Bulldogs have a good team and will make their mark in the Wake-Nash Conference and against other 1A teams, if they can stop the home run type play. ...rtiywWAW.,... SWIMMING TEAM . . . Zebulon’s swimming team was among the top teams in the league composed of towns comparable in size.
