GAVE JURY COIN TO
PURCHASE WHISKEY
GREENSBORO, Nov. 10. In dis
cussing various places in which they
have been in many years practice in
state and federal courts several of
the older members of the local bar
recall many customs that from fre
quent usage almost become a law in
the localities in which they prevailed.
They recall that in the old days in
South Carolina there was a custom, so
generally used that it was almost a
law, that in a civil case the winner
of the suit always gave the foreman
of the jury the sum , of " one dollar
with which to buy 'drinks, for the
members of the jury' returning a ver
dict in his favor.
It afems that from long, usage this
custom had "become, a regular part
of the proceedings after the trial of
a civil court and no court of com
mon pleas had proceeded properly
unless the winner iji a suit produced
the dollar with which the foreman of
the jury was to set the jurymen up
at the nearest barroom.
Of course, that custom , nas gone
out of vogue as one dollar would
Hardly get the foreman a smell of a
cork at present prices, to say nothing
of .giving; all '-of the; jurymen an P"?V
portunity to' wet - their plates. ahd?'
tickle- their -throats- ' & . i
The lawyers also recall that baclc
in the . old: days: the courts, ''in ,Vir
ginia toojc'jto, themselves" something ot
legislative functions'. 'Especially was
this evidenced" in connection 'With- hos
tels, or inns as they were common
ly known in those days.
