LENOIR, N. C. LENOIR NEWS-TOPIC, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1919 Page Seven WANTS TO PUT MEN IN GAY COLORS AND RUFFLES A man garbed in a black frock coat, a ruffle, a pair of pink breeches and bright-colpred stockings very likely would evoke astonishment if not ridicule were he to stroll down Fifth -avenue or Broadway, but Hen ry Parkes, hailed in London as "the hidden hand in men's fashions," de clares, according to a dispatch from London, such restoration of color and line to men's dress should be a logical and altogether proper after math of the war. He is seeking to revolutionize men's dress to popularize the "gal lant" styles of bygnoe days. His creed is that men want to cast off their dark, unsympathetic garments of gloom and wear clothes of bright hue and brilliant cut expressive of a new age of heroism and romance. "Volunteers wanted, 1,000 sports men of good social position, to wear upon a given date new fashions-for men designed to bring back color and line into masculine attire." This was the gist of a request the apostle of the new era of "romantic dress" sought to have inserted in London papers. To convince news paper representatives of, his sincer ity Mr. Parkes exhibited fifteen sam ple suits, or rather costumes. The "call for voulnteers" was printed, but the last communique from Mr. Parkes establishment was to the effect that the desired "war strength" of 1,000 had not yet been recruited. RATHER BE ON CHAIN GANG THAN LIVE WITH FATHER Rather than ' abide by the condi tions of a pardon given him by Gov. T. W. Bickett, Albert Horner, a white man living in Durham county, requested that it be revoked. His request has been granted and after a day and night of liberty he was returned to the county chain gang to serve five months of a twelve months' sentence for blockading. The con dition to which Horner objected was that he live with his father. The officials of the First Methodist church of Salisbury have decided upon a campaign of advertising to in crease attendance upon the services. THE "BRASS" OF THE HUN (Sbatesville Landmark) The "brass" of the Hun has almost ceased to excite interest It is so common that one is hardly surprised at any proposition a German may make. That accounts for the fact that so little notice was taken of the story from Berlin the othesr day that the Spanish embassy, in charge of American affairs in Germany, was overwhelmed with applications from German army officers who wanted commissions in the American army. Some of these commission-seeking Hstns said that they could be of value in "teaching the Americans how to fight." One would think that recent experiences might have suggested to the Hun that the American dough boy is a pretty fair fighting man, and that .possibly there are not so many things Fritz can show him. But pretending not to understand that is no more surprising than the proposal that America should put a unch of German officers in her .my. EMPEROR RAISES WAGES The former German emperor has taken formal possession of the House of Doom, at Doom, Holland, which he purchased some time ago, when the, keys were handed over to him last week, although he will not actually take up his residence there until early in 1920. The first act of the new owner was to raise the sal ary of the gardener from fourteen to fifteen florins ($5.63 to $6.03) per wek. IS SPEAKS AGAINST LEAGUE; PUT IN COLD STORAGE Ernest Lundeen, former congress man from the fifth Minnesota dis trict, who was to speak at a theater in Ortonville, Minn., Monday night, against the league of nations, was taken from the stage by members of the local post of the American Le gion, escorted to the railroad tracks and locked in a refrigerator car. The train was just pulling out and it is believed the trainmen did not see Lundeen put aboard. A CREED (Greensboro News) That fine flower of American bourgeoisie, the Saturday Evening Post, has formulated a political creed that is a classic of its kind. No such perfect expression of the mental attitude of the enormous class of Americans that the Post rep resents has ever been written before. It has just eighteen words, but vol umes have been written to express less. It is as follows: "Work or starve. "Save or want. "Play together, or you'll play hell. "Be a good American or get out." Jamas Watson Says, "I'll Never For get When Father's Hogs Got Cholera" "One morning he found 20 hogs dead and several sick. He called in the Vet, who after dissecting a rat caught on the premises, decided that the rodents had conveyed germs. Since then I am never without RAT- SNAP. It's the surest, quickest rat destroyer I know." Three sires, 25c, 50c. $1.00. Sold and guaranteed by Bernhardt-Seagle Co., Lenoir Hard ware & Furniture Co., Ballew's Cash Pharmacy and Hoffman & Son.
