UNITED STATES SEAL IS 136 YEARS OLD The great seal of the United States was adopted by Congress 136 years ago. The design was suggested toy Sir John Prestwich, an eminent Eng lish antiquary, to John Adams, then United : States minister to Great Britain, and was formally accepted by Congress on June 20, 1782. It is composed of a spread eagle, bear ing on its breast an escutecheon with 13 stripes, and in its talons holding an olive branch and 13 arrows, sym bolic of both peace and war. The eagle, the. suggestion of an English man, has ever since been the national bird of the United States. DANIELS FINISHES SPEAKING I TOUR IN HOEY'S BEHALF ' Secretary Daniels concluded, his speaking campaign in the Ninth dis trict in Clyde Hoey's interest when he addressed a crowd of approxi mately 2,000 people at the Charlotte auditorium. Ninety per cent of the audience was composed of eligible voters in Mecklenbnrg county. Morehead's residence in Charlotte t nd his much-talked-about personal jopularity which his campaign man agers counted on netting him a thou smd vctes, didn't fease the secre tin's attack upon his public record nor temper with any mercy his ap peal to the Mecklenburg electorate to rebuke the principles Morehead's party stands for. 1 Once Mr. Daniels characterized Morehead as the "huckleberry fly-by-night" candidate and urged his hear ers to vote against the man who, were he to follow his record in Con gress before, would take orders from the Penrose-Cajinon-Crane crowd that ran the rottenest Congress ever assembled at the nation's capital. "Wtih a record of cussing and ne gation and playing politics," the sec retary said, "Republican leaders in Washington are boasting that they will secure endorsement from North Carolina by election of another Re publican Congressman to nag and cuss and do nothing. They think the Republican candidate in the Ninth can fool and hoodwink the voters of Mecklenburg and permit him to slip into Congress. They know nothing of the spirit of Mecklenburg." Armed with a package of spare ribs and sausage, presented him by friends in Catawba county, Mr. Dan iels left for Washington. "Peace on Earth; Good Will Toward Men" Let us make this, not a mere meaningless slogan, but a live, pulsating principle at thi3 Christmastide. Let every class and faction clasp hands across their common barriers in mutual fellowship and, in full accord with the true spirit of the sea son, try to realize that the noblest principles for which we, one and all, strive and hope for are only attained through the practical application of "good will toward men." Let us remember that the real peace of which this Christmastide is symbolic is born within; and, likewise, the peace of the world is not an exotic principle but a domestic product and must emanate first from within, else our "good will toward men" will prove naught but false -and insincere. , Thus, &s a prelude, we beg to remind you that we are fully prepared, as purveyors of the emblems of good will at this season, to take care of your requirements in our line.
