LENOIR, N. C. LENOIR NEWS-TOPIC, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1919 Page Three FACTORS IN BUYING CARS (Hickory Daily Record Hereabouts when a rnan goes forth c'oined-up to buy a car his require ments usually run to certain makes of engines, motors and electrical equipment, a given number of cylin ders, the speed, the pick-up or the "performance," to be correct If it happens to tie a lady who is making the purchase perhaps she has an eye for symmetry, colors, shades and hues style and get-up, so to speak. But in Guatemala it a vastly differ ent, ftr, according to the New York Sun, the place where every well-regulated family keeps its motor car is in the front hall of the dwelling. The first thought of the purchaser, there fore, is to get the dimensions of the car. For it might just happen that the particular home occupied tty the man who longed for a Cadillac or a Pieoce-Arrow might have been built to accommodate a flivver, and then there is a tragedy moving in a larg er house. Not wanting to see disappointmen in the eyes of his customers, a pros pective car dealer in Central America writes to an Ohio motor car manu facturer and not only suggests that the cars for his trade must be de signed to fit the parlor, but he de mands that the cars fit te Central American drawing room, or no sale. Sale he: "Among the complete, details it is important to know the dimensions of the cars. These must be particular ly as follows: The total length from end to end, the total width from side to side and the height of the car. The importance of this question is due to the fact that private persons here do not use garages, but put their cars into the halls of their houses. Therefore it is necessary to know the sizes of the cars to find out whether thev could easily enter these halls." We pass this on to Jim Martin,' Esq., and sug?es that if he desires to. interest Central Americans in Piedmont wagons he should make them just big enough to enter the dining room where they may repose overnight. HAS ALWAYS BEEN CUSTOM TO FIGHT, PEACE TREATIES (Springfield Republican) ' " Our history reminds us tnat never has a peace settlement gone through the Senate without facing an intense opposition. There was no Senate in 1783, when the treaty of peace with England was ratified, but Jay's treaty in Washington's administra tion encountered fierce obstruction. The treaty of Ghent, which ended th ewar of 1812-14, was savagely as sailed. The first treaty of peace with Mexico in 1848 was rejected abso lutely and the second one was amend ed 'before being ratified. In 1899 the treaty of peace with Spain was very nearly defeated, owing to the strong opposition to the acquisition of the Philippines islands, which im mediately becam ea party issue, just as the acquisition of territory from Mexico in 1848 had changed the Wflole aspect of our politics. The exceptional power of the Sen ate to veto treaties by a minority vote has not always worked badly in practice, but it has always carried a grave menace to the country'? inter ests, because of the field it opens to politicians to exploit the partisan ha tred usually latent in the party op position to an administration. ' In the, present case a clear demonstra tion of this menace is seen in the magnifying of American criticism of the league - covenant, while in no other country does an anti-league campaign exist. , i "That Mrs. Brown must be an aw ful gossip.
