Pae Six LENOIR NEWSTOPIC, THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 1920 LENOIR, N. C. ONLY TWENTY-EIGHT CONVIC TIONS FOR PROFITEERING t Out of 895 prosecutions by the government for profiteering only 28 convictions have been secured, ac cording to information secured from the department of justice by the Washington correspondent of the Daily Garment News, and the corre spondent has figured out that these 28 convictions have cost the govern ment $1,920,000. The figures are based on the average expense of the department's special agents making the government's investigations lead ing up to the indictment of the "prof iteers." If the figures are correct eoch conviction has cost the govern ment $68,574 of the people's money paid in taxes to the government. "The figures are purely hypothet ical," says the correspondent. "The department of justice was as unable to state the .costs of the average fair price committee per day as it was to state the number of fair-price com mittees in existence. And the high cost of living has not been lowered by the 2S convictions. 'Recently the department of jus tice, in one of its publicity announce ments, declared that appreciable re ductions in prices had taken place. A day or so later the labor bureau came forward with statistical data proving that, on the contrary, pr.ces had in creased. "Attorney General Palmer and his assistants have repeatedly stated, in addressing conventions of business menti that it is their belief that less than 1 per cent of the business men in any one trade could be classed as profiteers, and that the purpose of the campaign was to bring that less than 1 per cent to book, and they have appealed to the i)9 per cent to help them do it. "Coincident with these statements made directly to business men, fair price committees and workers, ami I'irted States attorneys the country over have been making repeated and widespread charges through the newspapers that profiteeripg is ram pant. "Attorney General rainier has never yet explained how the high cost of living in a nation of 100,000, 000 population could possibly be caused by 'widespread' profiteering on the part of less linn 1 per cent of its business men." 112 Millions' used last year to KILL COLDS JILL'S CASCAWtJQUININt SLATS' DIARY O rv V.A. CONGRESSMAN SENT TELEGRAM 7 FEET LONG ON FRANK Discovery of several personal and private telegrams dispatched at pub ic expense by members of the House of Representatives is responsible for the latest investigation started by the Republicans, says a Washington special to the Philadelphia Record. The committee of accounts, of which Ke; resentative Ireland of Illinois is chairman, will conduct the inquiry and require members to pay for the messages from their own nockets. If Rheuma, the guaranteed pre scription for rheumatism in any form does not give quick ana joyful re lief the cost, small as it is, will be gladly returned without any quib bling or red tape. Rheumatism is a dangerous dis ease, and anyone who the slightest sign of it should drive ft from the system as quickly as possible. This is what Rheuma did for many. It should do as nluch for you. "I have been laid for one year with chronic arthritis," say sone suf ferer. "I had doctors galore; also spent four months in a sanitarium, but had practically no relief. Then I started takin gRheuma. Now 1 can go without crutches or other aid. which I could not do for the last nine months. I h:ghl recommend it. and would gladly answer any ques tions asked on receipt of stamp for postage." Thomas H. Eddy, Schuy lersville, X. Y. Rheuma is absolutely harmless and thoroughly reliable because it is one discovery that has forced rheumatism to yield and disappear. It is recom mended and sold on the no-cure-no-pay plan by Ballew's Cash Pharma cy and good druggists everywhere. Names of the offending members will not be made public unless they de cline to make the refund. The most glaring instance of mis use of the telegraph privilege which requires messages to be on official matters if paid for at public expense, was a telegram seven fee tlong by actual measurement, said to have been sent by a member of the House from a point on the Pacific coast to a person in the east. It was type written, double-spaced and filled seven or more pages. The telegraph charges were $07.13. DCM'T ,1C: NEGLECT IX.Il't I'.l'C ri ifturp. tn.i orders Li: .rfiil t: THE PATH OF STORMS (Raleigh News and Observer) Few people of North Carolina realize the immunity the St'ite has from the severe storms that sweep the countrv. We ail rind a siti-fac- .1 tion in the high mountain chain that forms our western frontier. That Tinge of mountains is infinitely more than simply a picturesque bit of scenery. It is largely instrumental in nu'ki rg our climate and saving us from the severities of the other sec tions. Severe storms break in on us from three directions. The most dis agreeable are the blizzards of the northwest. They come down from the Alaskan country, strike our untain system and are deflected to : i n-jrthenst by the high range. For .;ow nothing of the real blizzard it rages north of the Ohio and the Potomac. The storm that comes from Texas and th ewestern gulf coast is neither very severe nor dangerous. Much of it is split by the mountains and its force w-isted. The third storm tryt comes from, the West In dies reaches the eastern coast but is pretty well worn out by the time it gets to land if it comes our direction. So these disastrous disturbances, such as we have been reading about in the last few days, have little influ enc ein .North Carolina. We have our little flurries of cold weather in the winter for a brief season only. But they are slight as compared with actual winter. We have a few hot days of summer which are of little significance. We have an occasional slight wind storm and thunder show ers, but all of them of mild form, of little discomfort and little to be feared. Largely responsible for this safety is the mountain range which breaks the sweep of the air current, And that mountain range covers the west end of the State from north to south. It is a great old mountain range, picturesque, rich in treasure, heading streams that develop power, fertile in it ssoil, a sheltering wall for all of the. country to the sea. Who would live anywhere but in North Carolina, knowing the advan tages of this State? XI Nil TT..U1.
