A VISIT TO HIDDENITE AND A
STOP-OVER IN STATESVILLE
On account of a sick sister, wife
and I spent two days and two nights
in Hiddenite week before last We
found our sister, Mrs. Thomas Miller,
very sick and expected to live only
a few days. Last Friday afternoon
she quietly passed away and Monday
she was. buried at Liberty Methodist
church, not far from Hiddenite. She
was about 75 years old and was
ready and willing to go. She had
tried to serve her Lord faithfully and
well.
In Statesville we had a stop-over
of two to three hours and spent the
time pleasantly with Rev. and Mrs.
George H. Church. We found them
both in poor health both partially
paralyzed, but not confined. They
were doing their laundry and can do
all their domestic affairs. Brother
Church rarely preaches except on fu
neral occasions. He lives close to
the magnificent church house he has
been instrumental in erecting. It
will seat about 1,000 and is a thing
of beauty. It has a large member
ship and a large Sunday school. He
started this as a mission point years
ago when he was pastor of the States
ville First Baptist church. I imake
these references to Brother Church
because so many people in Lenoir
and Caldwell county know him per
sonally. He has been pastor of Le
noir First Baptist church and has
conducted several fruitful evangelis
tic meetings with this church. He
has been pastor of Yadkin and Piney
Grove churches in this county, and
has held revival meetings at Lower
Creek, King's Creek and Union
churches. I feel sure his many
friends will be truly glad to hear
from him again. He informed me
he owns two frood, up-to-date dwell
ing houses close to his new church
house. He lives in one and rents the
other. I saw his hue garden of ruta
bagas and other vegetables. He is a
good financier as well as a pastor and
preacher. They live alone. They
have had four children, but all are
dead, and all are buried in separate
burying grounds. May the rich
blessings of heaven continue to abide
with these faithful servants.
I. W. THOMAS.
FARMERS MAKE "MASH" AND
WAIT FOR THE STILL
The traveling "community still" is
the latest worry of prohibition en
forcement officers, says a dispatch
from St. Louis. The police "cleanup"
squad is now hot on the trail of an
elusive whiskey-making outfit. Evi
dence of the perambulating distillery
was tii-t discovered when the police
found i'arette Pasquale pulling his
ha:r and gnashing h;s teeth over 31
barrel of ,:nash, bewailing the fact
that "tn.it still ain't here yet." "It
cost me $400," wailed Pasquale, as
the officers dumped the mash in the
back yard. "Why didn't that still
come?" Pasquale's brother-in-law
was also arrested, at whose house 44
barrels of mash were found. The po
lice assert the "traveling still" is op
erated similar to the community op
eration of the threshing machine in
rural districts that is, going from
house to house as needed.!
FERTILIZER THAT WILL GROW
GRASS AND KILL WEEDS
Discovery of the long-sought fer
tilizer that will grow grass and kill
weeds is announced by the experi
ment station of Rhode Island State
College as the result of 20 years of
research. A weedless lawn is pos
sible without trouble or expense, ac
cording to the official college state
ment, merely by the use of ammonia
sulphate instead of nitrate of soda in
the annual application of fertilizer.
"Slowly but surely the weeds will dis
appear and the lawn will become the
even velvety green. By using am
monia sulphate, which is not more
expensive, in the same quantities
than the nitrate of soda the required
amount of nitrogen is furnished and
the soil kept in the acid condition
under which the grass develops best,
but the weeds are so weakened that
they are crowded out," the statement
says.
1921 MODEL STILL
The baby whiskey still was recent
ly captured in the southern part of
Lumberton. The plant is a one-gallon
capacity, 1921 model outfit. The
still proper was made of a small pow
der can, the cap off the hub of a
Chevrolet auto being used as a cap
for the still, a Ford feed pipe for a
worm and a small Karo syrup bucket
lor a cooler. It is thought that the
plant was used in connection with a
cook stove'. It was a dandy outfit
and had the smell of whiskesy on it
It took a committee of three, tight
accountants and fifteen laborers
three weeks to count Uncle Sam's
cash in the treasury.
Japan has plans for the electrifica
tion of government railroads which
call for the expenditure of a billion
dollars.
