'.; - ' There is much complaint upon the part of many people residing in Mannings wwnshtp ana that portion of Nashville township wherein tha County Commissions . have oraerea compulsory vaccination, and some arrests have been made in ordor to carry out the instructions of the Board. While this seems to be a hardship upon the people of those infested districts, yet the uommis sioners are doing the right thing in trying to get the smallpox under control, and every citizen of the county should co-operate with the Board and the Superintendent of Health in trying to save the county thousands of dollars in getting the epidemice under control. Our citizens, and Tat Graphic especially, is pleased to know that the differences which have existua in local political circles was ami' cably settled Friduy evening. A convention of the white Democrats was settled upon by the contesting factions and in this meeting on the date mectioned our citizens assemble in the court house to nominate can didates for the, various town offices. Mayor Jenkins called the meeting krorder and u report as to the con ditlod of thetreasury was made by Treasurer Gay, which showed that there was $284. 65 in the treasury. This report will, we understand, be published at an early date, and will show the economy with which i the officials have handled the town's finances. Mayor Jenkins then made a short speech in which be reviewed the work of the adminstration; the ob stacles which retarded the town's progress and the many difficulties the Hoard bad tried to overcome. E B. Grantham, Esq., was made chairman of the convention, and S. S. Gay secretary, S. R. Tyson assistant secretary. Before taking bis seat Mr. Grantham acknowledge ed the honor conferred upon him and made a few befitting and ap propriate remarks. The names of Z. V. Jenkins and S. F. Austin were put for mayor and when the vote was taken Aus tin was nominated on first ballot by one majority. There was some con tention on the part of the Jenkins faction on account of a blank ballot and the Austinites consented to another ballot and when the vote was taken Austin received the nomination by a majority of six. The following nominations were Diaue lor ixmiiuissiouers. o. o. vru, R. U. Brooks, S. G. Griffin, and J. E. Abernathy. In accepting the nomination for mayor Mr. Austin assured tbecitizens bo would strive to faithfully serve the best interests of the town, and would regularly draw his salary as often as the same became due. . Proba.bJy, too most applause was elicited when nominee Uay thanked the convention for the honor con ferred upon him and said. ''Now give us Bryan forPresidentaod Ay cock for Governor, and we. will at tend to the rest. The following paper, drafted by B. N. Rouse one of Jenkins' ardent supporters, was read at the close of the session. The result or the con vention shows , that Mr. . Rouse 'counted his eggs before they hatched, or had failed to reckou his host. "Feilow Citizen: We come with joyful hearts now that the struggle is over and our (Jenkins)side victo rious, to congratulate you on the vic tory we have achieved. Wo thing our political views are right, and though we sympathivo with our op ponents (Austinites) in their defeat, still we can imagine that this may be a lesson teaching th6m to see and turn from the error of their way. We have all done our best to win this victory, and the result will repay us for any annoyances during the contest, now are we in truth, doubly victorious inasmunh as our (Jenkins) side has resorted to no unfair means to gain the election. The private character of the oppos ing candidates hasn't once been al luded to. We have trusted entirely to exposing sophistries in doctrine and laying glaring evidence of mis rule before the honest voters. JLre we part let us trive three cheers for our victorious standard-bearer (Jen kins). Hurrah - for our (Jenkins) side." We hear right much talk about the scarcity of tobacco plants. Wo bad on hand a full stock of ''sore eyes" last week, and have more than we want now. Mr. Charlie Griffin and Miss Lois Jenkins, of Nashville were pleasant visitors here last Sunday. Quite a number of our people are sick yet. The back-handed licks which April is giving us seem to hurt worse than any. Mr. J. C. Beal has suffered great ly during the past week with a se vere attack of tonsilitis. We hope to see him out again soon. Our choir has ordered a supply of new song books, "Crowning pay No.4," and we hope to have some good singing in the union meeting to be held here next 5th Sunday and Friday and Saturday before. Wcitrayvlli lt.m. Little Noble Newy is quite sick with pneumonia. Master Willie Dozier who has been quito sick is improving. H. E. Brewer, of Rocky Mount, was in our commnity, last Monday. Fire got out in the forests Satur day night and did considerable damage to timber. Mrs. Hedrick, wife of Mr. M. J. Hedrick died at her home on the 3rd inst. after a lingering illness. Mrs. Hedrick was 27 years of age. and was 'a most estimable woman, and the sympathy of theentire communi ty is extended to the bereaved hus band and relatives of the deceased. North Swift Creek Union. The meeting of the North Swift Creek Union to be held with the church at Red Oak, on the fifth Sun day in April and on Friday and Saturday before, promises to be an interesting occasion.
