APRIL 25, 1901, Spring Hope Intelligence. Rev. Forrest Smith, of Louisburg, will deliver the commencement ad dress at the Spring Hope Academy next Friday night. We think the following, taken from the Goldsooro Arjrus, so timely that wemake it our letter this week. The patrons of The Graphic will all substantiate what is said about books that sluuder our beloved Southland: The following bill was Introduced in the lower house of Arkansas leg islature last week: ' ;'A bill to be entitled 'An Act to declare the American Book Company a trust and to prohibit said Compa ny from doing business in this state.' "Ha it enacted by the general as - sembly of the state of Arkansas: "Section 1. That- the American Book Company of Cincinnatti, O.. and other places in the United States, organized by a coalition of several book companies for the pur pose of maintaining high prices on school books and for the purpose of defeatiug honest competition, is by this act declared a trust, and forbid , den to do business within the bor tiers of Arkansas. "Section 2, After the passage of this act it shall be unlawful for said American Book Company to sell any book, map or chart, or any school apparatus or any other article of merchandise in the state of Arkan sas, And any agent of said compa ny or any person acting for tbem, . who shall be guilty of violating the provisions of this act in the state of Arkansas shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor aid shall be fined in any sum not less than $100 nor more $500 for eacb and every offense. "Sec, 3. All laws and parts of laws in conflict herewith are hereoy repealed and this act shall take ' ef fect and be in force from and after its passage." ' - Commenting on the above the Ar gus says: North Carolina through itsaccred ited commission for State adoption of school books, is soon to pass upon what books our children shall study in our public schools; and the peo ple had this law adopted for the ex press purpose of getting free from the fangs of the abominable book trust that has fattened upon our people so long, and we hope the book Commission will govern itself ac cordingly. n , And especially should tber Com mission be careful in its selection of Readers and Histories, for it is mainly through these mediums that insidious ideas are calculated fn the minds of Southern youth ; by South bating northern publishers especi ally when these publishers are banded in a trust. Let us keep a close watch upon the histories which are taught in our schools and throw out those which are untruthful or inaccurate the mo ment we fiud them. It is better for our children not to be taught history at all rather than to betaught false hoods for historical facts. A Testimonial from Old England. "I consider Chamberlain's Cough Remedy the best in the world"for bronchitis," says Mr. William Sav i v ,( f 'Warrington, England. ' "It wx, s $ '. i 1 my wife's- life, sbe having t- i a i crtyr to bronchitis for over t i y - -s, being1 roost of the time k her led. She is now iv.-f!l." j!i by M.C. Yarboro Planting Everything In Cotton. A gentleman remaiked: Our farm ers are planting every available acre in cotton. Ten cent cotlou has made them wild on the subject. They frequently pass my gate, in wagous loaded with all kiuds f fertilizes singing: "In the Sweet Bye aud Bye," but next fall I expect to see them hauling their 5 cent cotton to town siuging: "Show Pity Lord, Ohl Lord Forgive." Now, is this not about the site of it? Washing ton Messenger, What Smokelng Costs. Busing our calculation on revenue returns, we fiud tout the United States pays every year for cigura uud cigurettes $180,500,000, and $20, 000,000 for tobacco smoked in pipes To this must be added the cost of chewing tobacco, $50,000,000, bring iug the eutire tobacco bill the year up to $256,600,000. The total loss from fires in the United States last year was $120,000,000, so that tobacco costs more than twice as much as all the fires, treat conflagrations in eluded. Exchange. Terms of Magistrates. Attorney-General Gilmer, having been asked his opinion as to when terms of justices of the peace elected by the legislature ol la'Jo will ox pire, holds that the intention of the legislature was for justices ap pointed to nil vaucaucies to bold uu til August of this rear, and the three additional justices for every town ship went out April 1st this year. Tbe decission validates papers and instruments these justices have is sued this month. - - Of Interest To Farmers' As the spring has opened aud crops are being planted, insects are again becoming numerous und their ravages will soou beinn. We wish to urge farmers not to wait until crop is ruined, and then write for information, but as soou as an insect enienv u detected, seud ra speci mens to this ofhee so that they may be identified, and remedies sug gested. Tbo importance of the work against injurious iusects is becoming more and more apparent. t,very body is invited to inaKe free use of this office to obtaiu information re yarding insects friends and foes.
