Caad leadl Yelee-rUaara. We note a Mecklenburg farm ad vertised thus: "Fourteen acres for $1,300, four miles from court house." That is nearly $100 an acre, and the reason is, "on macadam road." Some people say they don't want mod roads because it will make their land go up and they will have to pay more taxes. The bistory ol tax assessments in counties where good roads have sent values flying ii n ward ia that there has been com paratively little increase in values for taxation; But even 11 good roads did so increase values as to make man pay more tax, it seems strange that anvbodv would turn down proposition that would double or treble or quadruple the worth of his Drooertv. Good roads make farm lands a whole lot more valuable than the same lands are worth on mud roads." Catawba County News. Maw Cettea Picker. Mr. C. W. Godwin of Raleigh has invented a cotton picking machine which is pronounced a success. The cotton is picked by a rotating and reciprocating finger and convey ed by fan to sack. It requires .one man to each picker, and with two men at work either four or five rows of cotton can be picked clean, as the cart moves forward. The man operating the picker simply places the mouth against the boll and the cotton is twisted from it and within the wink of the eye, it is in the sack. The picker refused to take leaves or trash and only seizes the cotton, picking the boll clean and doing this so rapidly that the capacity of the picker is only to be measured by the quick time in which a man can move from boll to boll. With two men at work last week, neither of them having used the machine before, cotton was picked at the rate of J 00 pounds an hour. Wilson Times. Same Castalla Rawi. Court convened Monday morning with Recorder Thorpe, of Rocky Mount Dreeidincr. The docket was not as congested as it has been here tofore but there were several eases of more or less importance. William Alston, colored, through his attor neys entered a submission of an as sault with a beadly weapon. It ap peared that he had invited another nesrro named Bud Goode to his house and being called away for some purpose, whenhe returned he found that his absence had been taken advantage of by his friend and as he came in he reached in his trunk and procured his pistol and empied it at his friend, striking him once in the hip which did not prove to be a serious injury. The defen- dent was fined one penny and cost A negro boy about fourteen years old acknowledged stealing some money and a knife from Mr.. F. V. A vent's store at Aventon. The boys father was a tennant of Mr. Avent and he said he had reason to be lieve there was a more mature mind advising and procuring the boy to make the theft and as the boy was so young that he had no dispo sition to prosecute him! The father expressed a willingness to thrash the boy in the presence of the Sher iff or any other person the Judge would order. In the hopes of re forming the boy and saving him from the association of hardened criminals on the road the Judge suspended judgement upon the pay ment of the cost and good behavior and warned the boy that if any com plaint was made to him of his mis conduct that he would re-open the case and give him a severe road sentence. The Judge did not order but recommended that his father give him a good thrashing in the presence of Mr. Avent and keep the boy under close subjection. Mr. Edward Chappell was indicted by Mrs Bunn for obstructing a road leading to some of her tennant houses. Mr. Chappell claimed that the road he obstructed was a road he cut across his own land and that he had a right to stop it Mrs. Bunn contended that it was an old road that had been there for thirty years or more, There was evidence that there was a road there in use for many years and that it had been in use up to the time Mr. Chappell placed his saw mill at that place. Witnesses testified that they assis ted in cutting a road with the gener al direction of the road in question in 1902 and Mr. Chappell said that was the road he blocked. A jury was ordered in the case, and after hearing the evidence and argument and the charge of the Judge the jury found the defendent guilty and after making a motion for arrest of judgement and a new trial he ap pealed from the judgement of the Court that he pay a fine of twenty- five dollars and cost The solicitor took a nol-pros in the case of State vs Whitney Overby for failure to work the road on account of the road Supervisors failing to keep their records in the proper manner. Nates Froa. Pleasant Crave. Prof. J. H. Hall, of Dayton, Va., is conducting a two-week's social singing at Pleasant Grove. The woods are full of tobacco drummers these days. One or more can be seen in this community al most every day. Toe farmers of this section are very busy housing their crops. The low price of cotton is causing many of them to feel very "blue." We long to see our public roads in just such fine condition as are the roads of Nashville township. The people of Mannings should wake ud and not allow all other sections of Nash lead them in such matters of permanent improvement. The meetings-recently held at Pleasant Grove came to a close sev eral days ago. There were several accessions to the church. Rev. D. F. Putnam, of Spring Hope, assisted the pastor. Rev. Geo, W. May.
