hatham Becord: The next legisla
ture can save several thousand dollars
to the tax payers of North t'aioliua by
reducing the number of its clerks and
other employes. The last legislature
was guilty of great extravagauce in
this respect. The last seriate liaff more
employes aud paid them more than
any senate since 18BH. The amouut
pnld the employesot ilie lat senate
was almost as much, us tlut paid to
the senators themselves. The amount
paid the senators as their per diem
and mileage was Jl4H-.80, and the
amount paid the swarm of employes
who waited on them was fl l.WJ.-S.
Hu rely there is great loom for reform
in this expenditure and we hope our
democratic legislature will make It.
The truth Is that even our demo
cratic legislature for several ysars
before IStWi had too mauy unnecessary
j employes, but of course uolhing like so
many as our "reform" legislatures.
Too many clerks and pages have beeu
employed by every legislature for many
years 111 striking contrast to the small
nunilier employed by the tirat demo
cratic, legislature elected (in lbTtl) after
reconstruction. Tin number has mole
than doubled since then, not because
there was more work to do, but la-cause
each employe has beeu doing less work
since 1870. We sjieak from personal
experience-, llou W L Haunders was
chief clerk of the senate iu Hie legisla
ture of 187U-'72 aud this writer was the
reading clerk, and these two did the
work 1 hen that, siueetheu, has usually
been done by lour or live clerks.
