Tbe recently organized Republican League bas as its striking campaign slogan, "Taft sure defeat, or a pro gressive Republican with a chauce to win." Mark the word "ehance." They adtnit defeat if Taft is renomi nated, but hate a faint hope of elect ing a Republican president again if a progressive is put up. This is the ultimatum put to Republicans all over the country. If what the progressive-, say is true, that tTie reuominntiou of Taft mean defeat for the Republican party in 1912, it might as well be ac cepted now that the next President of the United States is to be a Demo-J erat. Mr. Taft seems certain of a re nomination. This is because he has the necessary machinery to get the nomination. Here in China the other day 1 mailed a package by parcels post to another country for about half what it would have cost me to mail it from one county-seat to another at home. How long are we going to be content to let so-called "heathen" countries like China have advantages which so- called enlightened, progressive Amer ica ia too alow to adopt t Clarence Poe in Progressive Farmer. It la a notorious fact that the pose . offiee .'syscenr- of the United States is operated with about as little reference to business principles as rould be im agined.
