It seems that the people of this pounty are at last awakening to the seriousness of the smallpox situation in Cabarrus county. For the past several weeks the disease has been Increasing daily in this county, yet until last week the people generally made no determined effort to get the free vaccination, and as a result. the county now has more cases of the disease than at any time within the past 25 years. ' While It is true that smallpox does not kill as many people now as It formerly didj It is equally true that It is still fatal In many instances. And even if one does not die -pith the disease, .be Js marked, for ylife. and during the illness ta subjected to great suffering and torture. The State of North Carolina offers the treament free of all cost, and it Is a disgrace that Cabarrus county should have an epidemic of the disease. But it seems that we are beginning to see the light, and the Increased number of persons asking for and receiving the treatment daily now, Indicates that its spread will be quickly halted. : The vaccination Is the only thing the State offers now in the form of a guarantee against- the disease. And : the vaccination Is fully able to protect the average pen-son. This was shown in one home here. The father' and mother were not vaccinated. The ; father died and the mother Is suffering with the disease. : All of the children in . the home were vaccinated, and none of them caught the disease. It Is nothing less than criminal neglect for Intelligent people, ,, like we have in, Cabarrus county, to allow the disease to reach the epidemic stage.. We believe that all of the . people in the State, as well as all of the children in the eity schools, - as is how required by law, should e Tequlred to be vaccinated regardless of age. , .K0BTHCAB0U!fF8EC0m North Carolina ranks second in the total number of spindles in operation during January, only Massachusetts excelling herIn this. "In the light ot recent experience." the reported warned, "we should remem ber when we again enter Into a period of full prosperity that a re action will follow sooner or later; and if the flow of the incoming tide can be controlled so that the crest may not be reached too rapidly nor rise too high, the subsequent reac tion will be less severe and the next period of Industrial and commercial activity and enlral prosperity will be marked by saner methods, great er achevements along constructive line and of longer duration than any which we have had before." .
