ter of War Mothers stated this morning.
Tlte White Hall school will open on
Mouday for the 1023-24 term, it was an
nounced this morning by an official of
the county education department. The
White Hall School is one of the largest
in tlie county and a large enrollment is
expected this year.
All the men of St. James Lutheran
Church are invited to attend a noodle
supper at the Y. M. ('. A. this evening
at 7 o'clock, for a social gathering. No
admission fee will be charged, and noth
ing will be sold. Prof. .1. B. Robertson
will act as toastmaster of the occasion.
Mid-week prayer service will be neld
at the Second Presbyterian Church to
night (Wednesday) at 7:30 o’clock. The
service will be in charge of team No. 2.
with Mr. Grover Creech and Mr. Clift
itu-d Coley as leaders. Choir practice
immediately after prayer meeting.
No sesison of the city recorder's court
was held this morning. Chief Talbirt in
making the announcement, stated that
everything in police circles has been
quiet for several days and people have
been on their good behavior to such an
extent that the officers have had little
little to do.
Officials of the water and light de
partment had some trouble with electric
current in tltis city Tuesday. The cur
rent several times during the day became
weak and it was reported that the trou
ble was with the power station of the
Southern Power Company, as the city
was unable to get as milch current ns us
ual.
The work of preparing tax receipts for
the city is underway now. The receipts
will probably be completed within anoth
er week and then it will probably re
quire another week or ten days to get
them placed on the books. City Tax
Collector Fields will begin the collection
of the taxes as soon as the receipts are
completed.
Tile new school house for colored jic->
pit-, of Kannapolis, is well underway and
the building wi!’. he completed within sev
eral days. The colored school children
of Kannapolis have been attending schools
conducted in Churches of the town but
they will soon have their own homo which
will contain five class rooms, office ami
auditorium. The school is situated oil a
(imminent elevation in the eastern part
of the city.
The North Carolina Synod of the
Southern Presbyterian Church is in ses
sion now in Burlington and Graham, the
twin cities to entertain the synod joint
ly. At the first sessions of the synod
held Tuesday Dr. J. H. Henderlite, of
Gastonia, was elected moderator by a de
cisive majority. The annual meeting of
the synod is always an event of great in
terest to members of the Presbyterian
church.
Everything is ail set for the convening
of Cabarrus County Superior Court next
'Monday morning. October 15th. Judge
' Ben F. Long, of Statesville, will preside,

Baseball fans in this and thousands of
other towns throughout the United
States, today are centering their atten
tion on the world series which began this
afternoon in New York between the
Yankees and Giants. Betting here seems
to be about even. Many Coneord tans
seem to feel that the Y’ankees have the
better team, but they feel that the spirit
of determination shown always by the
Giants in a pinch will offset any advant
age helff by the Yankees.
The Men's Bible Class of Bt. James
Lutheran Church will entertain the
male members of the Church at a ban
quet at tlje Y. M. C. A. this evening at
7 o’clock. This is intended as a general
get-together meeting, one member of the
class pointed out, and is staged by the
Men's Class of the Sunday School. The
class is growing at the present and the
gift of the banquet to the men of the
congregation is one of several things
planned by the class members.

ing institution of that city, was dosed
by state bank examiners today. They
reported they had discovered a shortage
